Broken Sword 5 Gamescom Trailer

The 3D animations are stiff as hell (if this was 2D the animation, becuase of the low budget I wouldn't have give a damn, but being 3D models, sorry but is horrible and they are plenty of excellent animators in France to get not one of the most expensive and still do a great job).
Yeah, 3D animations look awful but the art direction looks all over the place in general to me. Hope at least the game is good.

Eh, animations in the first Broken Sword games weren't exactly disney-esque. I think you're using rose-tinted nostalgia glasses.
First Broken Sword had one of the best animations in any point & click adventure game and for almost every action. That's completely uncommon these days, most adventure games just skip them entirely.

Characters look ok, backgrounds look beautiful. Animation is the only thing that looks really bad, especially in those action scenes. It looks as if it was slowed down so moves lack impact.

Still, it's Broken Sword - that's enough reason for me to be interested in the project.

Looks about as good as I hoped a low-budget BS sequel could look, I just wonder how much of a downgrade it'll have on Vita.

This is how the walking dead looks on vita ;)

I did it so we can all in unison sang in praises to the greatness that is Square Enix... :\

Also that's not my Vita actually. A guy in my Vita club posted it on FB. He said he bought it off Japan PSN :(

Anyways, some Walking Dead screen taken directly from my Vita:

Here is a video of this scene in action, starts at 9:20

The animations are brilliant.

Thanks for the link; that is an excellent interview. A good amount of off-screen gameplay footage is shown there, and it has really done a lot to increase my excitement for the game. My prime concern was the animation, and also that the 3D models would look jarring in contrast to the hand-drawn backgrounds, but watching that footage, it all looks fairly seamless to me. Obviously hand-drawn characters and animations would still be preferable, but the team has done a really good job in that respect.

And above all, this is a return to the traditional Broken Sword formula that I've been longing to experience again for years. It's really happening!

I think the characters blend in very well with the hand-drawn backgrounds and they look truly 2D. At least during normal gameplay, were the characters are relatively small on the screen. In the cut scenes and in close-ups they don't blend in that well, but it's still ok. Luckily, cut scenes are only a small part of the entire game.

Btw, the game will feature internal achievements on all platforms: http://tonyrevdev.tumblr.com/post/59854576790/will-bs5-feature-achievements-on-the-pc-platform-any

I stopped watching the gamescom vid halfway through just because he was explaining a fair bit of the plot and showing a scene in-depth, didn't want it spoiled. But I have to say, it's looking fantastic. I can't wait :)

This just gets better and better. His work on the first two games masterful; really stirring stuff. I think back on the music that plays while you explore Zombie Island in the second game and I get chills.
Back in the day it was actually the music that made me love BS2 (my first BS and p&c adventure game) so much. The atmosphere is terrific!

Anybody know if 3 and 4 will get a re-release on Android like 1 and 2?
Highly unlikely, Tony said it would cost as much as creating an original game across all platforms. But maybe one day, when Revolution is bathing in money... ;-)

Most of that looked like cut scene stuff trying to emulate the PS1 art/animation style, the actual game play segments looked loyal to the art of the first two games.

You know, it's kind of shocking how close this game is to release now (what, 2 months at the most?), yet we've seen precious little of any actual gameplay. The most I've seen is a few of minutes of George in the art gallery at the very beginning. It's good in a way, because most publishers these days have a tendency to overexpose their games by releasing too much footage, so it feels like I'm going in to The Serpent's Curse knowing very little, and that's exciting in itself. At the same time though, I wouldn't mind seeing some uninterrupted footage of a new section. Some walking around, picking up items, conversing with characters, hearing some dialogue, solving a couple of puzzles. Just something to get a general vibe of the game, to see how 'Broken Sword' it feels.

i want to like this. i do. i love the others that i've played....but that art direction is just blah... and coupled with that animation its just atrocious.i remember seeing the kickstarter and not being hyped at all due to their early screens etc.... and well it seems nothing has changed.

good luck though to that game.

Note NOT FINAL COLOURING and there’ll be shadows, lighting and whatnot.

I can't get over how terrible some of the characters look in 3D. It just looks wrong.
Technically, when you look at them, they look fine. But it just lacks any character or soul, and doesn't blend in with the environments at all.

Yeah, Revolution is really careful about not spoiling the game too much. But one or two weeks before release there will be a "Beta" for backers available, where you can play through the first segment (art gallery) of the game. I guess this will spark a few gameplay videos on YouTube.

Don't understand what's supposed to be so bad about the art. Looks like most of it was taken from cut-scenes. The actual stages look absolutely beautiful.

In the above shot, there is a big stylistic difference between the main character and the background. Like the character is visiting a dream world where he is walking around a painted world.

Yep. I mean, look at those hand-drawn backgrounds! They're just gorgeous!

@Ingueferroque: The goat shot not the final version, still WIP. The art gallery scene is as good as finished, those screens look considerably better. The characters blend much better into the background there.

It does look quite shooty from the trailer but I think they're just trying to make it dramatic.

This is pre-alpha footage which might explain why the art looks so bad in some places. Not sure why the animation is so lifeless.

One of my most anticipated games still, very happy to hear it's getting a Vita release.

pre-alpha footage and they want to release it in 2013? I do not think it looks bad but something, maybe the parallax, broken the illusion. But a Vita release? Sure bought.

Well Rolf Saxon is back as George, that's all that matters to me. I don't know who the voice of Nico is this time. It's usually a different actress every installment!
Indeed, Rolf Saxon will reprise his role as George. Hazel Ellerby, the voice actress of Nico in the original BS 1, was initially planned to return, but she wasn't available for the first recording session, therefore Emma Tate will voice Nico this time.

For the German version, Alexander Schottky is confirmed to return as George. "German Nico" Franziska Pigulla isn't confirmed yet to return (I hope so though!).

Furthermore the original voice actors of Geroge and Nico will return (forgot their names).

I'm very excited for Broken Sword 5.
And was that a King's Quest 6 joke/reference I saw in the gamereactor demo, awesome. :D

Just been going through the first 3 games, at the moment so far, the 1st one, the director's cut edition is my favourite and compared to the third one, definitely prefer the 5th game back to the sort of 2D look.

What I quite liked about the director's cut is the inclusion of the puzzles which was absent from the 2nd one, so I hope it makes a return in this one. The animations in this new one look really fluid and the detail and how great the scenes have been drawn.

It's a shame that they didn't try to make the characters look more cartoony instead of simply using cell-shading. Even a black outline would make a difference, or more stylized textures.

If you look back to the old games you'll notice that they've never used black outlines for the characters. I think this would make them even more look like cell-shaded characters.
The way the characters look now is very good, not perfect, but way better than the characters in Pendulo's adventures.
In-game the characters look definitely great, only in the cut scenes they could look a little bit better.

I cringed at something Charles Cecil said in that game-reactor interview. That there is a puzzle where George is using dog hair as a mustache. Not exactly a funny good nonsensical puzzle unless George is interactive with his thoughts. I just hope most puzzles make sense as there were a few cringe worthy puzzles in Broken Sword 1 and 2.

Well, it's a reference to the infamous cat hair moustache in Gabriel Knight 3. Whether the reference is actually in the form of a puzzle in the game or if Cecil's just making a reference in the interview as a joke, I dunno.

I had a feeling it was a reference to that but hopefully it makes sense for players who are not familiar with it.

They still had darker outlines. ;)
I just think that right now characters stand out too much when they are put against hand drawn backgrounds.
