Broken Sword 5 releasedates announced (episode 1 on Dec 4, episode 2 in Jan)

That's fair, and ultimately I'm not against those who put up their money up front being rewarded. Minecraft proved that model was a success. Seems like handling episodic content can be quite hard for developers, easier to just upgrade everyone than manage it.

I'm struggling to see what the alternative is...

I'll wait for the PS Vita version.

I'll be over the moon if they did a physical version of that, but I will go digital if not.

Might be some sort of contractual thing? I know when we put the $15 down we were promised the "full game", would be kinda scummy to deny it us after deciding to split it.

This, pretty much. If you put down money for a Kickstarter tier, you're entitled to the rewards from that tier. That pretty much implies that you are entitled to the entire game, and Revolution denying you that would open them up to lawsuits.

That said, there's absolutely ways they could have probably juggled the terminology to get away with it, but it's probably far easier and better press just to give the whole thing out - I suspect that was always their intention anyhow.

I assume the two episodes thing is largely so they can get *something* available to sell prior to Christmas; I assume the core engine is robust now, and the main testing needs to be done on the gameflow. As such, testing just the first acts to release them would be quicker than having to do the whole game before release.

I have a feeling the Revolution staff aren't getting much of a Christmas vacation, put it that way...

Beta hasn't started yet (we ought to be getting info about that RSN), so if we take them as expecting about a month to fully beta-test the first episode, it'd follow that they'd probably expect a similar month to do the second. Since they only say "in January", then that could be a spell of time from the start of December to the end of January, more time than they're expecting to need.

In short, they *ought* to be able to fit a fair amount of time off in there; the only bit where they might feel the need to be strict is perhaps expecting everyone to be back by a date early in Jan.

On one hand, fuck yes, on the other, I need to quickly power through BS1-4 to remind myself what went on in those games... So little time.

Having been checking all the development details, I think the true reason for the split is probably because they split the voice recording sessions into two.

Not a big deal for backers, but people buying them expecting "two full games" might want to take that with a pinch of salt.

will def wait for the superior Vita version

never played 3 & 4... should i read up on the story i missed?

...it's a point and click adventure.

If they didn't use the touchscreen, something is *very* wrong with their planning.
This.
BS5 will also be released on iOS and Android anyways, so it definitely use the touchscreen on the Vita. There is also a video from Gamescom somewhere where Charles shows the Vita version with the touch controls.

What kinda bothers me though: 2 episodes? :/ I doubt those are really 2 "full sized" games (full sized game = 13-15 hours of playtime). I guess each episode is smaller and "only" 6-8 hours long. This would still make a nice total playtime so I'm okay with this. Would have preferred it though to play both episodes at once^^

I think the decision to split it up in two episodes comes from the fact that you hardly can sell an adventure game at full price these days. Back in the days an adventure on PC would cost regular 40-45 EUR but these days when the game is also released on mobile platforms for about 5 EUR such a high price on the PC can not be justified.
I also think that size restrictions on mobile platforms comes into play that prevented them to release the game as one huge adventure.

Not really new or unprecedented - Syberia I and II are each 6-8 hours and were sold separately and full price (and several years apart!)

Weren't those two different games though? I mean, the second was just a regular sequel. I never played the second so I can't comment on the content but that was the impression I had. This is more the intentended full game got split into two because the couldn't get all of it out this year?

The pricing for both combined is cheaper then BS1 or BS2 were, so it's pretty good value even if each is only half of a BS game. I think they'll be at the very least a bit bigger then half, unless that guy mclem linked to is really bad at p&c games.

Then those games were way overpriced since games were generally longer back then.
Today an 8 hour singleplayer experience at full price might be acceptable but IMHO a full price game must provide at least 15 hours of singleplayer fun.

Have been playing the original Broken Sword on my phone and really liking it. If I make it all the way through maybe I'll try this new one.

The people who are upset think the episodes will be like the Telltale episodes, very short and not much content.
But apparently this is not the case with BS. There will be only two episodes and each episode should be around 10 hours long.

Is it weird that this is my most anticipated game of the Year? Next gen can wait, it's all about George Stobbart! I can not wait for this, I need more George in my life. Those new screens are gorgeous, I'm so happy they have gone back to 2D, do we know if Nico and George are a thing? Or are they just friends, they didn't get back together at the end of 4, Anna Maria is no Nico Collard.

"Thanks to your support, we have been able to be hugely ambitious – each episode is a full sized game in its own right."

That's...crazy!

It's not weird at all, this is also my most anticipated game (probably of all time, only a new Crash Bandicoot by Naughty Dog could top this)!
Nah, George and Nico aren't a couple, but they are not "just" friends either. They are something in between. It's complicated ;)

I pledged for the boxed version which comes next year, but you also get steam/gog codes when the game's available for download in Dec :)

Glad it's not just me, I'll be getting a PS4 next year. For now I have a PS+ backlog to work through, The Last of Us platinum to attain, and Broken Sword 5. I haven't even played GTAV yet! I have lot's to do.

I hope they get back together, though it will probably last till the 2nd ep and they will have mysteriously split again. I wonder if they will follow strict tradition and use 2 different Nico actresses for each episode? lol

Since the voices have already been recorded it's VERY unlikely that we'll hear a different Nico in Episode 2^^
Besides that, it's in fact one giant game and not two separate games. Only in terms of size and content each episode is as large as a full sized game ;)

They decided to go for a Christmas release as otherwise backers wouldn't have had anything this year.

The final retail release and the boxed Kickstarter versions will be a seamless experience with no artificial break or anything. So if you have any backlog, I would wait until January.

The mobile and DD versions will remain as separate episodes. Game is pretty lengthy for its price, especially when compared to TT adventures.

I am really looking forward to this game. Though I'm not sure if splitting the game was a good idea.

Broken Sword 2 is one of my all-time favorites.

I'm glad for other people that the release (for Episode 1) is less than a month away, but I probably can't get around to playing this until I get my physical Special Edition in January/February next year. I'm trying to finish my master's thesis before Christmas and get my Master's Degree in January, so I won't have much time to play anything.

I also can't think of a point and click adventure game that's 15 hours long. Unless you were stuck for like 7 of those hours.

WAT? I missed the kickstarter somehow...thank you to all that supported this project! I can't believe there are two new releases I didn't know about! The one game I never got around to playing was 4 (didn't have a good enough PC at the time), did it contribute much to the story? I want to say most people didn't like it but I don't want to miss anything significant before starting 5.

Uhm, Broken Sword 1 Director's Cut? With those new gameplay scenes it's definitely 15 hours long on your first playthrough and getting stuck here and there without using a walkthrough.
The new scenes with Nico make up about 3 hours of gameplay, so the original BS is about 12 hours long.
BS 2 is somewhere between 8-10 hours.

It's always good to see people who'll buy the game after it's release because somehow Revolution needs to make profit with this game after all ;)
All Broken Sword games don't tell a continuous story, each game has it's own story. You don't need to play any game before you can play any other game of the series. Revolution also said there is no real timeline of events, all games are happening "at the same time" somehow (obviously except for the first game, where Nico and George meet for the first time).
So you don't need to play BS4 in order to understand/enjoy BS5. But I would definitely go for it. I think the story and puzzles are better in BS4 than in BS3. On the other side, the presentation (atmosphere, characters [except for Brother Mark in BS4, one of my favourite character ever!], animations, facial expressions) is better in BS3.

My favourite BS is also BS2 (because it was my first Point&Click game ever and I played it on the PlayStation back in the day^^)

Well yes, they have their own plot but George and Nico's relationship develops more through out the entries and there are occasionally a recurring character or two. I guess what I mean to ask is does BS4 develop their characters much more? Is there something that occurred between George and Nico that might carry into 5 I'd miss out on if I didn't play 4? I don't think I'll find the time to play it before 5 with PS4 and Zelda coming out but I should at least read up on the plot. I should see if it's on steam as well.

I still own the first three all on different platforms haha The first is my favorite and I found the GBA version to be superior to the PS1 version save for lacking cinemas. I also bought the Directors cut on the Wii. The second game was still great and I have it for PS1 and the third was a drop off from the other two but I still had fun with it and own it for the original Xbox. Basically that's a rant saying I love this series haha
