Broomstick League, the Quidditch take on Rocket League, releases next month

Its influences are extremely obvious.

So, there's this game called Rocket League, which is all about futuristic cars playing soccer with an oversized futuristic ball. But what if, instead of futuristic cars, you had flying broomsticks? And what if, instead of an oversized futuristic ball, you had a large-ish fantastical orb? That's Broomstick League, which bears more than a passing resemblance to both Rocket League and Harry Potter's beloved Quidditch.

Chris wrote about Broomstick League last year, and it appears there's a little more to Broomstick League than its clearest videogame inspiration. There are spells you can use to warp around the arena, and you can also use spells to hit the orb / ball out of your opponent's range. There are three game modes: 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3, as well as the usual array of leaderboards, stats, and upgrade options. It wears its influences on its oversize sleeves, but it looks undeniably fun.

Broomstick League hits Early Access on March 5, where it will stay for around 9-12 months while the team finetunes, balances and adds new stuff (like arenas and customisation options). If you want to jump in sooner there's a beta test you can sign-up to.

So close. A fee mods and you'll have the Quidditch game I've been waiting for for decades. They'll probably get a C&D letter any day now. =/

How did the HP Quidditch game never get a sequel? Basic as it was, it was still a ton of fun.

Because as basic as it was it was still an accurate adaption of quidditch based on Book/Movie rules. There was no need for another until the Harry Potter/Quidditch craze calmed down.

Quidditch by those rules sucks anyway though, because unless you have the most one-sided game ever, the snitch decides the game. Everytime. Give it some major rules adjustments though and it could be a pretty good game.

Eh, given that all the action happened on a 2D plane, I wouldn't call it particularly accurate or satisfying to someone who wants to give quidditch a go. It was more like 3v3 soccer plus minigames-lots of fun, more Mario Strikers-like than Fifa. And, hey, maybe that's the only way to make virtual Quidditch fun. Who knows? But even if you're right, and HPQ is the perfect Quidditch game to the point that there's no need for another, I still don't see why there was never a rerelease on later consoles, maybe with the addition of online play.

The franchise was and remains popular enough to support successful spinoff movies and many games in the last two decades. You'd think one more shot at virtual quidditch, especially built to the plan of an existing and successful game, would sell well enough to justify the relatively puny development cost. Oh well.

At the very least, if this sells, it could stir up some interest in something similar from the official HP camp. One can hope.

Is there also a flying golden ball a player can catch to make the rest of the game irrelevant?

Seriously though, looks fun, if it gets a stable playerbase I might try it out in the future.
