RIP.

On my rewatch of the series, I realized something I didn't notice while watching the show as it aired.

Xander is an unlikeable douchebag.

He's clingy, vindictive, jealous, and all together worthless. This was stunning to me because growing up watching the show, I had considered him one of my favorites in the early going.

He's Chandler from Friends.

My first and only post here(TV threads tend to over-analyze and annoy the shit out of me):

Buffy is the damn best show ever.

^see..comparing Xander to fucking Chandler. smh.

Just watched last episode of season 4 (Restless). One of the smartest allegorical episodes on TV ever. Perfectly captured the characters personalities, fears and insecurities while "predicting" future events and having an amazing atmosphere.

Jesus, I miss Whedon's contribution on TV, wasting all that talent for years just to make a two hour movie isn't worth it.

I realised it's sort of a rude show. You see Buffy and Spike have sex a lot, and also the magical orgasm thing between Tara and Willow, and Willow and Raks. That was odd.

Have been doing a mini-marathon today and just finished 'The Body'. I've heard a lot of praise for the episode and knew the character would die, but it really was more poignant than I expected. The absence of music to allow focus on normality, and the awkward silences and numbness are so accurate for what I remember of that situation. That was fantastic but draining. definitely done for the night after finishing that.

I know the feeling, I went through the same thing

I started to dislike all characters post S5.

I didn't Restless it but it was a fun little trippy episode. I liked it. Nice change of pace from the rest of the show.

Probably 100% the wrong thread to say this in but... I do not miss his contribution to TV at all. Only reason I'm re-watching Buffy is nostalgia and I never actually saw it ALL. So, far I'm still failing to see why Whedon is so well loved.

Characters in Buffy are so first gear, especially considering they've had 7 years of potential development. Also, everything is resolved within 2 episodes (unless you're Buffy then you get a whole season). The only character that truly developed over the 7 years of the show was Spike, all the others pretty much stayed the same.

This is absolutely true save for Buffy, Giles, Willow, Xander, Anya, Joyce, Wesley, Cordelia, Andrew, Harmony and Faith of course.

Buffy - How did she develop?
Giles - They showed a brief insight into his past as The Ripper, then that was it. He went from being a Libririan that was knocked out a lot, to being a Shop Keeper who got knocked out a lot. Yet, when they needed him to be he'd suddenly be Super Giles slaying monsters left, right & centre. No personal connection with anyone at all, except perhaps Buffy.
Willow - Went from a computer nerd to a witch. Had her heartbroken and became a 'druggy'. All her issues were resolved within 2-3 episodes.
Xander - Comic relief all the way through. Turned into a bit of a jealous idiot. No redeeming features whatsoever. What are his character traits exactly? What did he do over 7 years? He was a building. OK.
Anya - OK, S5-S6 wise she probably has the most actual character development. I'll concede that.
Joyce - Not really. She sort of just floated around and popped up when needed, which is why the actor asked to leave the show as she wasn't really needed at all.
Wesley & Cordelia (& Harmony, I guess) - That's Angel and I never really watched Angel, so I'll come back to that another time.
Andrew - Not sure on this one. Nerd who was evil, Nerd who was good.
Faith - She was always a loner psycho who wanted to be adored. There was no 'pay off' to her story, unless there's something I've missed.

Also, where is the 'other' Slayer? Shouldn't there be at least 3?

Buffy: Yeah, she's pretty much a bitch the whole time
Willow: What do you mean all her issues were solved within 2-3 issues? It took her all of Season 7 to come to terms with her actions in Season 6, which were the result of her growing dependence on magic over the previous three seasons.
Xander: Main thing is going from thinking he was useless to realizing that even though he wasn't a slayer or a witch or anything super natural, he had his own talents.
Joyce: Yeah, she was pretty much the same person, just Buffy's mom. I guess learning about Buffy being the slayer brought some challenges for her character
Andrew: Going from being evil to being good isn't character development?
Faith: I thought her arc on Season 4 of Angel/Season 7 of Buffy was the payoff.

Oh Faith returns? I don't recall that. I sort of stopped watching around S5 originally.

As for Willow - she was heartbroken over Oz, and was pretty much 'OK' (i.e it was never discussed again) after the 2 episodes that were given time for the story arch. It came back a little later, and again was solved within an episode. She goes cold turkey from magic, and she was fine after 2 episodes, even after the 'relapse' caused by Amy. Fine the next episode.

Wesley is far and away the most developed character in the Whedonverse. He's unlivable at times, but it's a believable trait, not something the writers spun to manipulate the audience's feelings.

And yes, Xander is a complete dick. Every girl I've ever dated loves him, and I just don't know why. Andrew also sucks, but that's the writing team trying to make him a paragon for nerdery.

I got my buffy rewatch going and this time I'm gonna watch all episodes, even the ones that are not that good like I Robot You Jane, Teacher's Pet, Bad Eggs and some others. Most of those "bad" episodes I only watched once, even though I've watched the show like 4 times.

After all they are not that bad actually. I enjoy them for what they are, of course they can't compete with main story arc episodes, episodes like Band Candy, Halloween etc. or truly unique ones like The Body, OMWF, Hush etc.

Most recent episode I watched was Inca Mummy Girl from season 2, again one of the mediocre ones and kind of a let down after School Hard (Spike is my favorite character), but it's enjoyable enough.

Just finished Season 6 - overall I thought it was a very terrible season. If it hadn't been for the Buffy/Spike thing it would have been pointless. There was no 'big bad' to fight, just 3 nerds and in the end
a gun was used... perhaps there was some social commentary I'm not aware of here. How humans are the worst monsters or something stupid. Then Willow going all Evil Witch, but being saved by Xander's love... er, OK.

Also, the Spike scene with Buffy...
I saw rape mentioned somewhere in this thread before, but didn't really pay attention to it. A few episodes later the bathroom scene happened and it was odd. Very odd. Was far too shocking, probably because it happened on Buffy. Just seemed... OK... wtf...

Still would have been happy if Buffy ended Season 3 or Season 5 at this point.

According to Joss,
Life is the Big Bad
.

Ergh. Lame.

I was the one who talked about the rape/bathroom scene. Its so disengaging as a viewer. It a low point in the series because it rips your out of the fantasy and into reality. Spike who for much of the show is the likeable anti hero like a cocky bleach blonde wolverine suddenly turns into this dick of character you want nothing to do with. If you ignore it he continues on being the likeable vamp he normally is.

Yeah, that was exactly the feeling I had. It was just like... well... come on... then he goes on that task to
get his soul back
and you don't care. Is that his excuse that he is a monster and such acted like one? Well, could he have just tried to eat her or kill her or whatever. I know he was sexually attracted to her and all that, but it was just... ergh.

That whole season was so sex orientated it was just odd. I understand that those who watched Buffy from the start would have been in their teens to early 20s at this point, but it just felt... strange. Even as a 28 year old watching it now, it was like 'Hang on... I watched this as a 17 year old..! No way'.

Season 6 is awesome, especially with Spike and Buffy. There are so many great and fun(nny) episodes in season 6 so I don't mind that there is no
real villain.
Besides,
Dark Willow
was fucking awesome and
the Trio was funny with all their cool weapons and shit, even though Warren is the biggest asshole ever.
I actually liked that
Xander saved Willow and the world, he is the character that knows her best so it was believable. Spike trying to rape Buffy is one of the most upsetting scenes in the whole show and in that moment I really hated his guts, even though he is my favorite character. The fact that he willingly (!) wants to get his soul back to be deserving of Buffy redeems him though. It is magnificent how human Spike was able to be, even though he had no soul. He is the only vampire that can truly love without a soul and the only one that would take all the guilt and remorse that comes with a soul just for love which really says something about his character. I think Buffy and Spike is the best love story ever and one of the very few love storys I care about and appreciate in fiction.

OK, so finally watched all of Buffy.

The finale was terrible.

After all the build up of Spike the payoff was poor
outside of the him calling out Buffy on being a bit of a bitch when she said 'I love you'.
I felt very little to nothing for the ending.

Now finish Angel. :p

Not even for Anya ? :((

Been making my way through Buffy. I'm up to S4 and so far it's clearly the weakest. That said, it seems to be really picking up. The first half with mopey Buffy was just bad but the last few episodes have been very funny (Something Blue) and just plain great (Hush).

In general it's a really great series. Hadn't expected it to be so enjoyable.

Yeah that episode Something Blue was really funny.
Spike and Buffy wanting to get married and kissing all the time was hilarious

Up to S6 now. So far it's been awful. I thought mopey Buffy was bad in S4, but this is another level. Thank goodness for Once More With Feeling to perk things up a little. Buffy, Dawn, Terra, Willow, those three nerds...all are or have always been dull. Even Spike is starting to be boring. Hopefully it will improve; they normally do.

Yea it's not good at all after S5. S7 only gets worse.
