Bungie: "Destiny Is a Different Game After 20 Hours"

At this point I'm convinced Bungie has no idea what it is/was trying to make.

20 hours in means you've reached Endgame. This is MMO territory. This is where the game actually starts following MMO conventions.
Yet they said it "wasn't an MMO" ? I don't get it.

Is the raid any good ?

I like the change of pace/focus after level 20 personally. Blow through the story, do a few strikes, hit level 20 and them focus on daily/weekly challenges, replaying missions on higher levels, and grinding engram drops and vanguard/crucible marks.

Certainly not for everyone, but I love shooter gameplay--especially with online co-op--and loot games so it works for me.

My only real gripe with the game is wishing the story was better and presented a lot better. But that's moot now that I'm through it and on to end game.

Man, where was all this backlash during the beta? Wasn't there a withdrawal thread even?

Expectations are a real bitch.

I went in completely blind, and I'm really enjoying it. Yes, I do realize that the game has some serious shortcomings but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it. PvP has been really fun too.

I guess it all comes down to: Do you enjoy the core gameplay and is that enough to keep you playing it for hours and hours to come?

So far, yes, I do. I'm not sure how I will feel about it once I'm in my 20's and the gear grind kicks in, however. One thing is for sure though, I am in no hurry. It feels like Destiny was meant to be savored slowly over a longer period rather than rushed through as quickly as possible. You can get burnt out on anything playing it like that.

Exploration mode needs to be reworked. It's crap. The game also needs NG+ or something. Not everyone wants to play bullet sponge strikes and raids as the only thing to do at the end. Yeah there's PvP but there needs to be more meat to the soloable content later after story completion.

If there was more to do outside of strikes, raids, and PvP at endgame, maybe people wouldn't feel so disappointed. Lots of gamers don't really enjoy bullet sponge bosses in FPS games.

If you're playing loot games for the story, you're doing it wrong.
Funny, I actually enjoyed the writing in Borderlands, especially 2. Without the clever writing the game would probably have been a lot more boring.

In all the loot games I play, I don't grind. I quite dislike grinding for loot, actually. But I still enjoy loot games. Ones that reward you with useful and interesting stuff at a reasonable rate while simply progressing through the content. It sounds like Destiny doesn't offer enough loot to satisfy that, and the lower rates of loop drops means you *have* to grind in order to get this useful and interesting loot.
Exactly. I don't get why loot games should necessarily be "grindy". A good loot game doesn't force you to grind at all, only if you want to "powergame" or something.

This is something I don't understand. You have spend a considerable amount of time with the game and say it is still bad. Why do you spend time with it when it is bad from the start? You have placed alpha and Beta and 20+ hours of something you don't enjoy? Or is the bad meant for level 20+?
But others have said you are not allowed to criticize the game until you've played X hours/reached level X/played the raid that comes out in X days/etc. Can't win huh.

I have to say I have enjoyed it from the start.

I went into this game with very low expectations and man I was blown away. I love this game so far.

Didn't enjoy it at the start, and was pretty skeptical after beta and their backtracking on how much content there was. I think this is a pretty accurate comment by them, and I don't believe it is them just trying to save face.

Finally got up to 23 last night and ran the heroic strike with some friends who were 21. Completely changed the game for me. The suspense of potentially being one-shot by a sniper, having to dash into open to grab ammo while enemies burst down upon you, and having to rush to save a fallen comrade in the middle of a battle because a new wave was coming and they don't have a respawn timer made the game a blast. Yes there are those extremely frustrating moments where they feel like more of a rip-off than a challenge, but overall it made the game pretty intense.

Definitely gave me the feeling of when they first added heroic dungeons to WoW and a majority of us ran into them undergeared yet mashed our face against the keyboard until we completed them.

Do I like their grind mechanics? No. I hate vendor grinds. But, some people hate rng grinds even more so at least there are multiple routes. Just wish I wouldn't have received two Warlock legendaries from random pvp rewards while playing a Titan...

Man, where was all this backlash during the beta? Wasn't there a withdrawal thread even?

You could only travel to the moon in the Beta, right? I think people assumed the gameplay would get a little more varied or dynamic as the game opened up.

Also, I thought Bungie said somewhere that the Earth and Moon missions in the Beta were missing some that were in the full game. Is that true?

How am I a hater? I was genuinely hyped by the game, played Alpha and Beta. When info leaked that Old Russia (i.e. Beta) is whole of Earth, I became concerned. I voiced my opinion and got some fare amount of shit from Destiny fanboys, in old thread. I still bared hope, that game won't be as shallow as my instincts and common sense told me. That there will be additional quests in Kings Watch. So I even pre-ordered digital Guardian Edition with Season Pass, again, being carried by the hype.

After initial disappointment with level 1-20 stuff, I thought I will give Destiny another chance, get good gear and experience level 21-24 stuff. And I cleared everything with my friends, each strike at level 24 and weekly heroic strike on 26. Alright, here I am with level 25 character. Game is still bad. And yet I am giving it another chance - raids. If they will be as shit, what next? Another chance for expansion, I guess since I got Guardian Edition might as well.

But it's always "give Destiny another chance", it's all excuses, right now game is in horrible state, even Vanilla Diablo 3 don't compare to it.

And before people accuse about talking out of my ass, you can easily see my character profile:

Edit: misread "hater" part
NEVER get hyped. I like you had a misgiving when I heard all we'd get is old russia on earth, but from what I got from the beta showed me that I would be find this acceptible because I never bought into the hype. But I understand why you feel that way. But I hope this shows NEVER get hyped.

NEVER get hyped... But I hope this shows NEVER get hyped.

If someone seems something that makes them excited, they might get hyped for it. You can't tell someone to not get hyped for something.

I was hyped for Destiny too, almost bought a PS4 for it, but the finished product was not what I was told it would be. Bungie's previously brilliant manipulation of the press and people's expectations went a little bit too far this time.

If you get hyped and get deflated it is all on you.

And how this industry is over hyping things, people should be more cautious of hype.

I actually find the pre-20 stuff to be more fun so far. Getting gear better than "rare" seems like a total crap shoot. Repeating higher level strikes with a good fireteam is fun, but I am not sure it will carry me to level 26. I have never been big on "loot" games, so I guess the idea of repeating things for diminishing returns never appealed to me. Getting each class to 20 will be fun though, and gives the game more milage than a lot of shooters.

After I hit 20 on my Titan (and got to 22-23) I started a Warlock. I'm enjoying going through the campaign again, but I feel it ended abruptly. I'm guessing there might be more story in the raid? I haven't played through all of the strikes yet, but grinding 100 points per week isn't that appealing for both crucible and vanguard, and maybe more with the other two reps (or more) you can equip an item to gain reputation with.

I do have quite a bit of fun playing with friends when there is a group that isn't full, but at this point I feel solo-play is useless unless I'm working on a new low level character.

Hello!

A question. I absolutely loved the first 20 levels.
I'm level 21 after maybe 23 hours or so.
I have one strike mission left, then I've done everything that is available on the map.

So, whats the point after that? I can grind for hours and hours to find loot. I'll fight enemies that are hard relative to my level. But what is the point of the loot? I will level beyond level 20, maybe I get to 24, and I'm still fighting enemies that are hard relative to my level.
Then I get to level 28 and I'm still fighting the same enemies, still hard relative to my level? There is no variation, no cool missions in spectacular scenarios. I just go down a looong cave, fighting tons of enemies, then fight the boss. And I repeat this over and over again?

Does the game change in any way, because to me, it seems like it stays the same, but I level up, so I can fight enemies of higher level.

So... why? Whats the point?

I get raids at level 26. Do I need to grind for hours and hours to reach that? Couldn't they just make raids from level 10 and let everyone in on the fun? Most people wont reach level 26.

So.. please encourage me to keep playing this game :)

I enjoy the end game content of Destiny same way I enjoy Diablo/WOW. The difference is Destiny, unlike BL2, actually plays like a shooter through n through, instead of an ARPG in 1st person. That's a big plus to me.

If you get hyped and get deflated it is all on you.

And how this industry is over hyping things, people should be more cautious of hype.

It's not on you if someone manipulates you into being excited about something.

Once that happens several times you get used to it and become a cynical husk, bad that's not a nice standard to hold people to.

Yep, they said that. What the didn't mention is that it was pushed to the DLC.

For me, after 20 hours, Destiny turned into a game with limited non-PVP content remaining. The PVP is not desirably compared to other FPS I have, due to poor maps that lead to nothing but shotguns and fusion rifle domination.

I played a bit more than hours and I'm really enjoying the game. Regarding the story, I'm in Mars so I'm almost in the end of the game. In the last 3 or 4 hours I unlocked several types of events and stuff that I'll check once I beat the story and level up my lvl20 character a bit more revisiting the planets. Until now I only played under 10 PvP matches. So yes, it will be different for me.

I don't get all this hyperbolic criticism. Yes, it's repetitive, but less than most FPS. You mostly shoot stuff and go from the point A to point B. Just like in all the other shooter. But here after 20 hours playing I'm still having fun playing the single player campaign, and in most FPS games I complete it in under 10 hours and there is no incentive (or a very little) to replay it. And well, here there are a lot of modes I still have to play, in addition to a lot of cool stuff to unlock/loot/buy.

Sometimes Gaf gets too toxic with extreme criticism. I think that yes, the game can be improved (specially the storytelling) but it's insanely fun and really good in almost everything.

I'm stuck at LVL 24 :(

from the other thread:

I'm at 24 now, and frankly, farming the cave isn't worth the time anymore. I've got the best blues I'm likely to get randomly, and the two legendary engrams turned out to be crap. My time is better spent in the crucible or the strike playlist to earn my purples the hard way.

I'm currently sitting at lvl 26.

What is really frustrating is that I maxed out my Vanguard Marks during the week (it's very easy to do so) and then on the weekend I had little incentive to play. I refuse to humiliate myself shotting at a cave, and loot on strikes are almost non-existent.

Thankfully Horizon 2 is almost here.

Man, where was all this backlash during the beta? Wasn't there a withdrawal thread even?

The beta was brilliant fun, it even sold me on the game. It was an amazing sneak preview and we couldn't wait to see more.

Except their was nothing more really to see - none of the potential that was hinted at paid off at all.
What was in the beta was never built upon and expanded, it never went deeper into the mechanics and the scale never got larger. What was in the beta was just extended, and that was disappointing.

Destiny is still good, but it could have been so much more. It still keeps me coming back, but I am a little disappointed it never tried anything new after the initial intro (the same applied to Titanfall as well)

Ok I've well put 20 hours into it now and it has become a far worse game. That random loot system makes me wanna stop playing.

So Bungie was correct:After 20 hours it does become something different:a game you arent interested in anymore

hopefully the tidal wave of releases in the next 2 months can wash away the bitter aftertaste of this shallow experience.

So basically this game is a Grindy bore-fest before level 20, but post level 20 it's staring at a cave for hours on end because the "end game content" offers nothing for loot.

Great.

The game does change a bit once you hit 20 in terms of some of the content and equipment you suddenly have access to; However, I don't know that I would say it really amounts to much. I like the game, but it is what it is. I can't see myself grinding to the level you have to grind to get to get a lot of the legendary and exotic gear. I've played close to 17 hours according to the game clock so if I can get 20-25 hours out of this game I'll be happy and feel like I got my monies worth.

I'm level 21 and still have yet to get a single legendary drop and my one legendary reward from leveling up my cryptarch transferred to a rare...am going to complete the story today or tomorrow and then finish the standard strikes and then start the strike playlist and hopefully I will start to see better rewards. I am definitely frustrated with the damage sponge bosses; but am still really hooked....hope to be completely done with the game except for the DLC and some of the new rotations and such by the time Sunset Overdrive hits

I've enjoyed every hour w/Destiny. He's right, once you hit the lvl 20 mark your goals and approach shift to a different end-game. Still fun for me... (shrug)

Don't expect much off strikes tbh.

I'm like 60 hours in, started my second character a few nights ago. I love the game, I love that there's enough to do that I don't get tired of doing the same things over and over. Usually with an FPS I run the story once and then PVP carries the rest of the games life. Now I can do PVE elements to break up the PVP and it keeps me interested in the game. I'm not getting too burned out or too salty.

Its a Bungie FPS, that is what matters most to me. PVP would typically be enough, but the strikes and raid add an interesting twist to what you do with a FPS once you've completed the story.

20 hours in you realize Bungie swindled you good and that is when it ceases to become a game and changes into fraud.

Sure you could get a refund based on false promises.

I'll watch the whole thing later but those 3 points at the beginning are right on.

Why is everyone grinding at the cave? Just grind cruicable / vanguard marks.

I personally find grinding vanguard marks miserable, and find PVP frustrating, but I've never been a big PVP person. Of course I find grinding the cave or any other spot miserable as well so not a whole lot more to do. At a minimum they could at least have added vanguard rep & marks to story missions at higher difficulties with modifiers. One a day doesn't cut it.
