Bungie ends development on Destiny 2

I disagree with the idea that the content would take too much time or effort to restore. That comes across to me as more horseshit excuses from Bungie. There are three major things I can think of that would break levels with an engine change:

- Lighting / VFX
- Bounding boxes / physics
- Scripted events

Lighting was likely restored because none of the other content looked any different after the update. This means the elements that likely presented the challenges were bounding boxes or scripted events... And yeah that's a fair bit of work, but so what? You have the original code and map data as reference, suck it up and do it. Bounding boxes may have needed to be re-flagged for their physics properties. Scripting could have needed a new language or to be re-compartmentalized into new call / storage methods (Bungie was vocal that game compiles / builds took too long at the time).

Neither of these is an unsolvable problem. They clearly had the resources to rework the content because according to them they did update half the content in the game during the development of beyond light. All the content that didn't hit the vault was reworked. Why couldn't they continue that work in the background during year 5, year 6, etc? It probably wouldn have gotten done by year 7 if they kept working at it. They probably just tested the waters with their vaulting announcement and people gave them a pass. It was simply cheaper to just pretend this content never existed.

There's also seasonal content forever removed from the game that was developed after the engine update. They could have put some effort into making that content playable again because it should be engine compatible. Being the assholes Bungie are though they not only removed that content from the game, they deliberately told youtubers they could not even document / archive it in video form. Destin used to make video documentaries of the seasonal stories to preserve them for furture players. Bungie shut that down.

I treat Bungie with the same level of respect they've treated their game / players / IP with, that being none. Bungie does not value their own work beyond pre-order money and first week sales. Never let them live what they did down.

I saw some people are getting their money back on the $100 annual expansion pack through costumer service due to Bungie changing their plans for it. It was to be 2 raids and more dungeons and stuff and there is only a single raid and a dungeon I think.

More money that Bungie is losing for being incompetent lol.

And of all things to bring back, they brought SRL (Sparrow Racing League) back right as they decide to put the game in maintenance mode. You can make this shit up.

Focus on the less popular and lower earning title. Lay people off, always a signal of strength that brings players flocking to your live service game, don't have D3 any where close to being a reality.

Sony already said they where going to keep supporting Marathon, but maybe Bungie is not in part of that equation.


Now I sadly have to said that nothing of value is getting lost. Destiny fans finally broke their abusive relationship with Bungie, and numbers said they learned their lesson and didnt jump to Marathon. Destiny 2 was only alive because of reputation of Bungie and Destiny and big part thanks to the psychological shenanigans that keep players addicted to it. As someone that REALLY tried to get into the game like 4 times the new player is just so ass that it is clear their main focus was to just milk what they had.
 
As someone that tried it out briefly during COVID and made it out of tutorial to the first main coop hub, is it worth playing or picking up and going beyond? Enemies seemed basic no matter the race, same types and game play loop. Felt like three or four different types/styles and then that was it.

Really? I stopped at TFS but people said the campaign was done justice and merged both the elements great. People didn't love the whatever praxy-sword?
Don't know about overall seasonal activities but it was done pretty well considering.

But my point was more so how Bungie/Sony is thinking. If a huge franchise like StarWars can't pull people back, might as well pull the plug or make 2 year commitment to make another Forsaken DLC which probably would have still flopped.

Division 2 was basically a dead game for years and yet people kept playing it.
Now watch Destiny 2 having as much players as Marathon even after its discontinuation for months.
 
I think a lot of us saw this coming for a long time, but as someone who had played the Destiny series for more than a decade, it's certainly a really sad news even if I had stopped playing back in late 2024. is the game flawed? definitely. but its highs are simply unmatched amount it's competitions. going into a raid or GM run with a team that knows what they're doing and helping each other to come out victorious is a great feeling. and getting that special new exotic, no matter if it's useful or not, is such a hit of dopamine for me that it keeps me coming back all these years. but after Lightfall, things really had changed. I honestly had wished that they didn't stretch things out to make Lightfall the way it is, and instead made it the "intended" final chapter of the game to give it a proper send off, rather than what we had right now where the story got dragged out and ended on a whimper the way The Final Shape's ending turned out to be. but I digress. the end of Destiny might not be all that glorious, but it had been a good run for me no matter what. I enjoyed the game with it's flaws and all and I wish them luck in whatever they're working on next. see you all starside. 🫡

It was like reskins of enemies in starwars colors or half baked mods. Destiny was fine in its own universe, borrowing starwars like totally killed it for me. As I was a fan of both separately, but together, nope.

Bungie purposely delayed Destiny content to inflate Marathon's numbers. So for Marathon to have a rough launch instead of a Concordian one thanks to Destiny players.

I'm not sure if we will see a very evident colapse in CCU numbers going forward; like, going from ≈15k to ≈5k at peak hours,
tho.

But if the review bombing gains steam enough to make that 80% go to a 70%. And then media makes headlines

Yea same, felt so cheap and just gay all around.. Like to blend two IPs that have nothing to do with each other was lame as fuck. I was done before that star wars crap but it felt like such a desperate cash grab, I knew they were cooked when that happened.

I think the best idea is they need to hand it off or sell the IP to someone that wants it, destiny is a good ip and someone who appreciates working on it needs to get it

Even though I have played Destiny for a hundred hours or so, I genuinely fell in love with it and really enjoyed my time.

This definitely sucks but at the end it's just business. What a mess Bungie has became, quite possibly the worst acquisition done in history.

Destiny is truly loved, fans are very crazy about it and because they have an extreme attachment ( 9 years ) it hurts really hard. I wonder how Bungie will survive.

Such a shame and with Bungie bleeding, I don't know how long Marathon will survive anymore.

This is such very heavy day for gamers. Destiny is kill.

So we're talking 5 years for a rushed Destiny 3. I've been reading some sad stuff from Destiny 2 fans. if you think about it, it's ran for longer than any game I can think of. Destiny is like WoW for consoles. Some people really lived in that world. I liked Destiny 2 a lot. I played it as a single player game basically. Did some matchmaking strikes I think. Got about half the DLCs before I just felt left behind. But I can see how people get hooked on it with friends. It's a quality game. Reading posts about starting D2 in elementary and playing through college. There really wasn't anything like when for I was that age range, but getting it abruptly and unceremoniously turned off is pretty shitty. Even though I guess it is supposed to be over after Final Shape. RIP in peace Destiny 2 bros.

Division 2 was taken over by the scrappiest team in all of Ubisoft who decided to work passionately on it day and night, all while engaging with the player base. Division 2 is quietly having a renaissance. It's in great shape.

ya it's obvious that it would take years to come out but just framing it in that way where if you were to look at a calendar you won't actually play it until you see 203_
just made me think about the passage of time in the real world.

Cost more than likely. Destiny is/was a very expensive game to make.

Also FO76 has more players than you think,from AI:

  • Steam Concurrents: Daily peaks on Steam generally range between 9,000 and 12,000 players.
  • Monthly Active Users: Around 9 to 10 million players log in monthly across all systems.
  • Platform Split: The console populations (Xbox and PlayStation) make up the vast majority of the game's active player
