Bungie ends development on Destiny 2

The next major announcement by Bungie will sadly likely be massive layoffs, not Destiny 3.
You aren't wrong. I want to play again but I don't want their anticheat. I don't trust it and don't like it having that much access to my system. Destiny 2 was a great game, I don't know what caused Bungie to jump the shark the way they did but it went downhill fast.

They have nothing in development. The article mentions they're beginning incubation for new projects. This company is a fucking joke.

Please forgive me for crashing out, but D1 and 2 gave me some of my most fun gaming moments online since 2014.

I was a solo player but wanted to play the group activities. I joined a clan, worked on getting over my general shyness with unknown people, and found a group of people who I legitimately loved playing with.

And they just killed the entire thing over fucking Marathon, a game almost nobody asked for. A game that peaked with abysmal numbers. Meanwhile the game that defined them since 2014 had hit its record peak like 7 or 8 years after it released. A series that had so much potential, wasted by fucking incompetent management and owners.

Fuck Bungie. PlayStation, close em. Please.
Bro, your good, don't apologize. Everything you said is so valid.

What an era.

Destiny 1 is my most played game game of all time. Countless hours in both. An absolute end of an era.

How Bungie fucked it up is beyond me. That formula and gameplay was like crack. Yet they could not stop tripping over themselves.

Still though. Not sure I've had more unbridled fun in a video game playing that with my buddies
Yeah i cant belive how they managed to fuck it up this bad, Destiny had so much more to give but they couldnt handle it and just got in full sell-out mode instead.

It was Halo meets Phantasy Star Online. Such a shame.
Whats a shame? The game had a ten year plan and while it had its off moments it absolutely delivered. Everything comes to an end, shame they just dragged it out a year or two too much. Same shit with Halo should have ended with 3. Reach was shit, I don't care what anyone says that series peaked at 3 and should have ended when we finished the fight.

Raise a toast to a great franchise and great memories, not the shitty end bit. Like most deaths and funerals the end bit is usually the worst. Remember the good times.

A good end to Destiny 2 would be restoring all the gutted content. In this respect Destiny 1 is a much more complete experience after support has ended.

And the comment I made has very little to do with Halo but rather with all of Destiny's myriad systems it has a lot in common with PSO and may as well be a FPS PSO all the way down to the 3 class system that each had it's pros and cons.

D2 should have ended with TFS, I think everyone is agrement with that. Personally I don't give a shit about half the stuff they took out, I played most of it to death and the stuff I didn't I have zero desire to play again, the red war campaign for example.

About damn time especially with the Marathon garbage. They haven't been good since the Halo 1 to 3 days. Went downhill after that and Marathon was the last straw but they were already bad even before Marathon.

I am disappointed just as much you are. And maybe there are multiple factors at play here (some we will never know) but with the last set of expansions it seemed like bungie wasn't able to please the customer base in a substantial way. They probably saw the writing on the wall based on whatever metrics they were tracking (or inadvertently made that into reality) and placed their bets on supporting Destiny with a small team and working on a new game. Both choices didn't exactly play out the way they hoped and here we are.

People stopped playing. Bungie moved on. And now we are stuck with version 2. Nothing lasts forever. It was good while it lasted. Really good. Eyes up, Guardian 🫡

Never played destiny so I would definitely be down for a D1 remaster with the whole content.

If only Sony had a studio specialized in remakes/remasters.

Legitimate question. Where would you have liked the series to go? What would constitute a reboot worthy of Destiny 3? I guess I'm asking because after all these years. What did we not get from the series. I think we got everything we wanted in some way or the other. They were still making content but people were done.

The well ran dry. If they made a Destiny 3 what would make it different enough to warrant starting again? I think Bungie did everything most people wanted out of the game at some time. I feel like if we got a new Destiny game people wouldn't be happy. Not enough content, mostly the same as the series in the past, etc. Still can't get matchmaking right :p

The game was good even great for some of us. I don't know if another series will ever top Destiny for me. But I do know, it's ok to move on to something else.

Edit: removed two I accidentally tagged in quote.

I'm not entirely certain yet. Right now I would just like to see the new story they started get finished. For the numerous faults in the Edge of Fate expansion, the story, I think, wasn't one and I would have loved to see what they had planned for as a follow up to the things that DLC started.

Edit: and also wanted to see something done with Xivu. Built up across the lore and several seasons and some minor storylines here and there, and those plot threads are just abandoned now. The Hive god of war could have made for a pretty solid raid imo

I did really start going down memory lane today on Bungie and Destiny.

Halo 3 and Reach. WOW. Halo 3 sold me a Xbox 360. Reach I lost so many hours to and adored it.

Then we get Destiny 1. A pseudo mmo fps with incredible lore and gameplay. Hooked. Did every raid with IRL buddies. Thousands of hours lost.

Destiny 2. We all show up, hate the launch raid, and from there it falls apart. I came back for every expansion, but I never did raiding anymore. I did the expansion story then would watch the raids online. Just me solo. The magic was there, always, but life moved on. Time commitment not possible. The game had highs and lows, but overall it was good memories.

D2 and Bungie really lost the plot when sold to Sony. While I love Marathon because that same magic exists within it as D1 had, it's such a longshot to reach those same highs on a mass scale, and I don't see Sony or current Bungie achieving it.

I want to believe, but I think after season 3 I could see Bungie just being dissolved entirely. Which in turn could see Sony selling the IP for Destiny to recoup some losses. Where the IP goes won't matter because it'll be a ghost of whatever it could've been in house.

If Sony couldn't green lit D3 at D2s peak, and then keeps saying no, then it'll never be the next project.

Destiny is dead officially.

This leaves a major hole devs can chase that's a far more reliable desire than the extraction shooter trend. Outriders 2 perhaps?

Unfortunately the disastrous launch of the first Outriders ultimately doomed that game, despite the expansion being really good.

Also unfortunately, Square-Enix owns the rights to the Outriders IP so I don't see them revisiting it any time soon. Even if they wanted to, People Can Fly is currently a support studio for Gears: E-Day and they have a contract with Sony to work on a new game based on an existing Sony property.

what would be a destiny-like game? I swear every gameplay i saw just made me think of normal looter shooters

What Bungie got wrong was making the game too formulaic as that got old quickly. Easier for them to make, tiresome for players to engage with. Pure dreadmill.

They forgot everything that was compelling and exciting to engage with during the highs of the first game and moved to a model where there wasn't really a race for a chase to get the interesting new stuff with your mates, it just fell into your hands when you handed over cash/handed over a bit more cash for a premium edition or pre-order.

It's my opinion and I'll fucking die on this hill - the game coming to PC and that playerbase's jump-on-reddit-and-whinge-like-cunt mentality fucked the whole thing hard, and having wankers like Luke Smith in charge sent the game spiralling up its own arse and exacerbated the shitness. Early D1 was my jam. What D1 ended up as was not that but it had some very high highs. D2 only had a couple of high points in spite of itself, once the core of what Destiny should be about had been long forgotten.

??? Outriders core game was decent, despite the fact that they gutted the looter shooter aspect of it some time before launch and turned it into much more of a 1-and-done. The "expansion", Worldslayer, was one of the biggest, most repetitive its-fucking-nothing grind cash-grab the shooter genre has ever witnessed. But I don't blame PCF for what they served, up, they still wanted to get paid thanks to the shitty deal they signed with their publisher and their publishers genius move in bypassing direct sales with a day 1 game pass launch.

It was a double edged sword. I would say it was catering more to the no-lifers/streamer crowd more than they should. But that group also gave them more exposure. But that is what I was trying to say earlier, they chased their own assess around and round. I think everyone got a little bit of what they wanted.

But chasing the dreams of the fanbase / streamers/ etc is what got them where they did. Bungie didn't kill Destiny 2 completely, the fanbase had a large part in it. Destiny 2 in its Final Shape 😂 was crafted in some part by everyone. Not just Bungie, we all fucked it up. No one knew what they wanted, there was no grand design, too many hands in the pot.

Destiny died so Marathon could die.
