Bungie: Our new IP isn't tied to Microsoft

Hellraizer said:
They sure have, but IMO not while they are working so tight with Sony. I could also take out MM out of the post and leave Insomniac, who is like Sonys Bungie.
Well, I agree with Insomniac, they're a good studio, but I don't think they would bring anything to Microsoft that will get people to adopt their hardware. Microsoft really seem to be trying to take both ends of the market, the casual and the hardcore, and LittleBigPlant, as uninviting as I find it, it's going to be massive with the hardcore and with the proper marketing, and on a cheaper console, it could be huge for the casual gamer as well. It's everything Microsoft wants at the moment.

I think MS has a right of first look on their projects.

If no exclusive agreement has been signed it probably doesn't look that hot.

I wouldn't be so certain of that HANS. I think when they say their next IP isn't to Microsoft, It just means that MS doesn't own the IP like they do the Halo universe. I'm 100% certain MS would have to see and refuse whatever that next title is before it could go to other platforms. Either way, unless Bungie was talking about Wii, PSP or DS, 360 will be the smarter choice to stick with due to popularity of their previous titles, number of consoles sold and the price tag of the system. It would be a waste of time for them to simply go to PS3 by itself.

Unless it was a multi-platform title, but then again I think they would rather stick to one system.

Who? I can assure you I'm not the lead villain of Die Hard 1. If only I could sport his goatee and walkie talkie with as much style!

I find Bungie's relationship very peculiar. I wish there were more open details surrounding their relationship right now. Given what we know, which is nothing more than vague comments from the Bungie staff, I wouldn't be surprised to see either situation occur (them staying exclusive or going multiplatform). It's hard to interpret their comments.

Can you think of a better term? I wasn't using it in a negative light. The whole industry is moving towards a multiplatform approach. I don't see why anyone ever gets as worked up and angry about these isuses whenever they do. As a multi console owner, I guess it just really doesn't affect me. But even if I were to only own one console and my favorite title that was once exclusive is now not, that doesn't really affect my enjoyment one way or the other. More people are simply getting to experience a product that you enjoy.

I guess people get so worked up about it for the lulz and sales-age speculation, but other than that, from a gamer's point of view, what's the big deal?

That doesn't mean anything.
No really, it doesn't.

Even if he was, I hope he doesn't get banned this time because his tag is awesome. Easily one of the Top 10 tags on GAF, I want to congratulate the mod responsible for it.

I don't see why the PS3 really needs a game of Bungie anyway.
The console has to many shooters already and needs to focus on something else *hint gief Jrpg's hint*

I hope they go multiplatform, I really can't see Bungie abandoning their fanbase at all. I'm just worried they come up with something amazing and MS snaps it up. Fuck it, I'll probably have a 360 by then, the way the price keeps dropping.

It's not really a question of need. Does Microsoft really need, say, MGS4 or Final Fantasy on their system? Not really, but if they can have that franchise, then why not get it? It's all about building an impressive lineup of games that can match or compete with your rival, and so far Microsoft has managed to do quite a good job of that by being first to the market and gaining a stronghold in the west.

So while Sony doesn't necessarily need Bungie's support, they're a great developer and certainly they would be interested in having them on board if there was any opportunity of doing so.

I'd be really surprised if Bungie put out another game on any other platform this generation. I just can't see them wanting to spend the development time to put the game on another platform, and learning something like developing for PSN.

Next generation? Maybe because they'll be learning everything from the start like everyone else. But this generation? I personally think they'll stick to the 360.

It's a Halo 3 standalone expansion. They have a small team working on it. Call it what you want, it's far from a full effort endeavor.
I'll call it Halo 3: Recon.

Well, every game put beside Halo 3 will seem like a lesser effort if we follow your logic. It was one of the most expansive game ever.

2+ years is hardly quick.

They only started on it a few months ago. The total production time for Halo 3: Recon is probably only going to be 18 months.

However, I don't think anything Bungie does is quick and dirty, so I have no doubt that H3R will be great.

I'd be glad to see Bungie games on the PS3 and 360 - the more the merrier.

Theres a better chance of the game being mutiplatform than PS3 exclusive. Its hard to imagine Bungie turning their backs on such a large and loyal fanbase on 360.

This is Microsoft's reasoning.

"We own the HALO IP outright. What the fuck do we need Bungie for anymore."

This is Bungie's reasoning.

"They own the HALO IP outright. What the fuck do we need Microsoft for anymore."

In time I can imagine Bungie taking a path similar to Level 5 in Japan. And by 'time' I mean over the next five years give or take....

My logic isn't that complex. It came from the horse's mouth that Halo 3 Recon is being done by a small team at Bungie. And for all intents and purposes we are talking about a spin off expansion.

The "Horses mouth"? Please excuse me if I doubt you have any real contacts inside of Bungie. Sorry but I just don't see it.

Bungie will for the foreseeable future publish all their games on the 360. No way in hell they will abandon their fanbase like that, I don't care how much another console holder offers them. The most a Sony only owner could hope for is a multiplatform title.

And yet if we make some small adjustments.......

Square Enix has a long and storied history of switching allegiance to the current gen leader. It is actually surprising they are not supporting the Wii more.

He doesn't need contacts, they said so in a recent post at Bungie.net.

Whatever they end up doing, I hope it is exclusive to something. Bungie is possibly better at cultivating a community than they are at actually making games. It always sucks to have a community splintered by platforms and networks.

I'm glad they are leaving the Halo world behind. It'll be interesting to see what they do when they can do anything they want.

I hope they know what they're doing. MS & Bungie have been a great team and have made loads of money together. The grass isn't always greener...but it also doesn't stay green.

Dude, they said this in video interviews. :lol Gamespot has it for example.

Pretty sure whatever Bungie releases will be on the 360.. sure there might be PS3 ports as well, but I think they really enjoy the 360.
It's almost as if they were owned by the people who make the 360, or something.

Damn I thought MS had these guys locked down for exclusive projects. MS's first party really is pretty embarrassing right now, especially in comparison to Nintendo and Sony. What are they down to Lion's Head, Rare, and Turn10? I guess they also have that new Halo team.

MS has a different strategy. Gears has the funding, backing and all the qualities of a top-tier first party developed game. But MS doesn't own the studio. Does it matter? Will I really give the slightest shit about that when I'm playing Gears 2 next month?

Yes but it's rumored that EA are publishing Gears 3 for 360 and PS3.

It just seems odd that Microsoft wouldn't tie down Bungie.
They left because they want the cash, Microsoft just want the exclusive games. Seems like an obvious deal.

Well does MS own the Gears IP? Because if they don't that could cause some major problems for MS later on if Epic decides they want to branch Gears off to other platforms.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAH.

Seriously now with all the love ms is giving gears 2, there is bound to be a new contract coming between ms and epic.

Why tie down someone that doesn't want to be tied down Bungie have their creative Freedom MS has the most important piece of that though the Halo I.P the most important thing in all of this. So Bungie may go off and make games for other systems but they won't be Halo games which some of the posters in this thread are secretly hoping for so they can laugh.

It's rumored? Where? In your head maybe.
We'll see.

They own the IP, and when asked if the series will continue exclusive they said "well this one is" in reference to Gears 2. And EA recently announced they are publishing an Epic game for PS360.

In terms of Gears 2, it doesn't matter, but the point was just that I'm surprised they didn't have Bungie locked down when they gave them independence.

Their next game is going to be on the Xbox 360 and probably exclusive. You don't turn your back on a platform that has given you 6-8 million sales each Halo game :lol

well don't MS have first refusal on any projects that Bungie do?

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Epic Games, Inc. today announced that they have signed a publishing agreement for an all-new action title for the PC, Xbox 360® video game system and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. The new intellectual property is currently in development by Epic’s People Can Fly studio in Poland.

Doesn't sound like Gears to me.... :/

That's what I remember reading. But apparently not.

I guess the rumor was debunked, I wasn't exactly following it.
It doesn't even matter, the point was they could go multiplatform if they wanted. And I can't imagine why Microsoft would allow a MGS developer go to possibly mulitplatform.

Bungie has already had a Sony-console exclusive game in the past, hint hint ;) ;)!!111!11
And Mac too!!

Actually, I bet that we won't see a new Bungie IP before, lets say, 2010.

I don't think we are talking about ports here.
I will go as far as saying if they make a new IP it will be for a different type of machine. Not for a Ps3 which is basically a 360 made by Sony.

For me the remaining options are; PsP, DS and Wii. And out of these 3 Wii makes sense.
