Bungie's Next Project - 'New Halo 3 Campaign Experience'

Halo related.

Oh and is there any way to see if Micrsoft registered some new domain names which may be related to this?

What's been the word on this new project?

Halo-related or entirely new IP?
Halo-related. The best guess at the moment (based on some pre-E3 leaks/rumors) is a grittier, 3rd-person squad-based shooter, perhaps based on the ODSTs.

The original leak said Gears of War meets GRAW and similar in tone to those Neill Blomkamp shorts.

That sounds cool to me. We'll find out soon enough.

Why so pessimistic? They won't make the same mistake twice.

But I'm actually glad that I'll be gone during the announcement: no anxious waiting or high expectations for me!

After all the excitement in PoliGAF today, I'm not sure my hopium levels can take much more. I hope they've got Jerome ready to kick some nuts at Microsoft if MS delays the countdown again.

From MonsterTard(TeamXbox)

"I repeat don't get your hopes up people. It's going to be a nice announcement, but not I'm going to get a boner off this announcement type thing."

"Bunch of the Bungie staff and G4 staff including myself went out to lunch today."

^ G4... maybe there will be a thing on G4 tomorrow like the rumors said? I know G4 shot it down, but maybe they couldn't say anything about it, so... yeah. *shrug*

Note to Bungie: Don't forget to post the E3 Podcast after it's been announced. You said you would!

when/where was this.

Isn't MonsterTard the guy from TXB who called Halo 3 nothing special and that it was just going to be Halo 2.5 ??? I doubt he had any inside info on the teaser too. Just because he had talks with Bungie and G4 at lunch, doesn't mean anything. They probably just told him that they were going to announce their next project tomorrow, and that's where he's basing his crap off of.

Wow. Didn't know that anyone from IGN had a decent relationship with Bungie, after the bullshit TXB has pulled in the past with Halo 3 and the whole Matt Casamassina ordeal. I guess I'm a bit myopic when it comes to this shit.

At any rate, my expectations are right where I want them to be, thank you.

That was Shock IIRC, but MT may have been hand in hand with that as well. Obviously this is about their new game and not just the map pack for H3 as we already saw the shots from tonight indicating such. That is a big deal any way you slice it (well save the fact it's not merely an XBLA title and more on the lines of this squad based Halo game). However, if it is a small teaser who knows what we will be able to deduce at this point. The fact they are hanging with G4 is somewhat interesting sidebar to all this.

Although, MT could be pulling everyones leg as well. Hard to take him seriously at any given point.

Whats the general consensus? Would be people be more disappointed if it was literally Halo 4? Or is that what people want?

Id be happy with that.

I'd definitely be happy with that. But I have a hard to believing that is what it'll be. The just put up the new patch for Halo 3 and more maps are on the way. They wouldn't announce Halo 4 now.

I seem to recall IGN getting preferential treatment when it came to being able to claim 'first' for their Halo 2 review. Unlike 1UP's PC page, their website gets excessive, copious amounts of hits. Power is everything -- utterly irrelevant power, which allows the overzealous Halo "fans" to read a review telling them exactly what they want to hear. Note the purposeful exclusion of the word "Bungie", and the strange quoting of the word "fans".

Were there documented words of disparity between Bungie and IGN, specifically for Matt Casamassina's insistence on showcasing a project that probably didn't get off the ground for other reasons than the obvious one? I doubt there's any bad blood between the two -- unknown projects that are canned get highlighted from time to time, for whatever reason.

Edit: Buttonbasher's GIF is awesome. Also, forgot to ask what the TXB incident was -- haven't gone to or read that site in eons.

I'd love something in the Halo universe that takes the focus off being the solitary badass and puts you in the middle of huge Covy/Human/Flood firefights--and a 'grittier squad-based shooter' sounds like it might be just that.

A prequel AKA Fall of Reach for the love of god.

Please.

Please.

Do want.

Oh and according to TXB kids us gaffers are silly because we don't know that Monster Tard is joking around like he does all the time. Hmm :\

I want to play the battle depicted in the Halo 3 diorama commercials. Or the Fall of Reach.

Seriously, that thing was epic. And I'm definitely down for a gritty third-person shooter. We'll find out tomorrow! Hopefully.

Documented? lol. No.

I'm not saying that there aren't people at Kirkland who would have lunch with people from IGN and I'm not saying that didn't go down here, I'm just a bit shocked because I've been under different "undocumented" impressions of the situation as it were.

Ah, was simply wondering -- wouldn't be aware if there had been, probably. Have frequented IGN less than ten times over the past couple of years.

I don't know. I think if its going to be another Halo that the series really needs a rejuvenation. Halo 3 was the apex of the Halo 1 formula. It's time to mix it up, and the best place to do that is with a new (or related) ip.

Well I have an exam tomorrow at 8:30 - 10:00 maybe if I finish fast enough I can get out and back to my dorm, just in time to watch the countdown end.

halo RPG? that would be fun with loot and upgrades and shit. I agree though, what keeps me interested in the series isnt necessarily the MC story line, its the mechanics, time to mix up the players.

I am in the minority, I hope its an XBLA game. I want to see what type of game Bungie can develop when they want to be super creative and artsy.

I'm just not feeling an XBLA, I want them to just make regular games where they don't have to have a small MB limit or something crazy like that.

I think the great thing about the transpired teasing has been the subtlety of it. We know there's this Superintendent -- some type of A.I., surely -- that rhetorically spits out the same phrases: "KEEP IT CLEAN!, YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK!, PLEASE REMAIN CALM!" We can glean some more information from the two recently posted log-type conversations from bungie.net -- the fact that the Superintendent is conversing with an officer, who seems familiar and expectant of the things the A.I. says to him. Also, that there is a conflict or war of sorts occurring between (seemingly) human citizens and some unknown adversary. There are two distinct connections to the Halo-verse, coming from the first few lines in the second posted dialogue -- the United Nations Space Command (UNSC), and The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), a subsidiary of the UNSC itself. More detailed information about the UNSC here, and more information about ONI here.

Had you guys made the correlation between S1 -- from the second log -- and the mysterious Section 1 of ONI? Something that's probably been out there from the second it was posted, but I haven't been able to follow these developments very closely.

As I said to someone on IM, it's hard to precisely decipher what it's going to be. Will be delectably interesting to find out tomorrow.

im still holding on to my prayer of something connecting Marathon with the Halo franchise

dont let me down Bungie

im pretty much counting on being wrong though

I was thinking more along the lines of the SPARTAN-I soldiers. JANISSARY JAMES MAKES HER TRIUMPHANT RETURN </wishful thinking>

Yeah, take a second to read the thread's last few pages. We've talked about Section One and the possibility that this is an elite group of ODSTs being sent down to an ONI spook for recon work against the antagonist, which is presumably the Covenant or the Superintendent or both. Lots of signs point to that line of thought.

I would die. I have the Chatter ring as my cell ringtone. :lol

That's actually what I thought too when I first read that, about the Spartan I's. It'll be like the Covenant invading a human planet, done RIGHT this time.

Not that Halo 2/3 did it wrong, but it just could've been much better as far as atmosphere goes.

I don't want to get my hopes up for any one thing, just because it'll probably be something we don't expect at all. I'm not even expecting the unexpected. I just want something solid. :D
