This piece about his weight loss by sportswriter Bill Barnwell is a great read.

Edited to add: Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson is fascinating and worked for me. Barnwell used a different route, but it's still a good read about the mental part of it.

Cardio cardio cardio, specifically treadmill. That's what shed off most of the weight for me :)

Give up rice, bread, pasta too.

See? This is exactly the problem.

"Give up rice, bread, pasta too" this is the main reason you lost weight, not cardio.

Had a question for the people that do intermittent fasting. Wouldn't this totally mess up your blood sugar and hormones and stuff like that? I dont know how any of that stuff works so I'm curious.

It's completely unnecessary too. Why cut carbs when you can just eat whole plant foods? Fiber/starchy foods fill me more than just fast and protein ever did. Before going plant based I was ALWAYS looking for something else to eat. Fiber (with a mixture of fat/protein/carbs) keeps me full and happy. You don't need to cut anything out, just eat WHOLE FOODS.

Eating less, drinking tons of water, cutting out craft beer multiple times a week, and 30 minutes on the elliptical 4+ times a week help me go from 185 to 169 in a few months. Doing it for my blood pressure more than the weight, but I'm very pleased with all the results.

It's absurd.

You want to build sustainable habits that you can maintain for the rest of your life.

Cutting out staple foods isn't that and is setting people up for failure.
I think it's because eating bacon, sausage, and other processed/unhealthy foods sounds good when dieting. People don't want to have to significantly change poor eating habits. I'm not saying it's totally easy to do initially, but if you're willing to place your health as a major priority, you'll find that it's worth the lifestyle change. Never been more healthy/happy/satisfied in my life. GF too.

Beer will destroy you, btw. Used to drink it every weekend and now not at all. Never even think about it. Of course you don't need to cut drinking but I would suggest it in the long run for a multitude of reasons.

Your body burns glucose for energy so starches and sugar. Cut those and force your body to burn ketones which are fats.

This is why fasting makes you lose weight since your body's metabolism mechanism changes to ketosis.

Long stretches of ketosis will make you lose the most weight.

Once you reach a healthy weight you basically need to change the mindset when you eat. Eat till you're satiated not till you're full. And consume adequate calories for your level of activity.

It's really not bad when the alternative is meat, eggs, cheese, fish, and vegetables, etc. prepared in a wide variety of delicious ways.

Besides, it's not like you can never enjoy pizza or bread or pasta ever again. It just means that you treat those things like a treat and really get the premium stuff when you do indulge. If you're adhering at least 80% of the time, then it's generally OK to slip a little, and many people even encourage it.

I know I certainly enjoy stuff like sushi, beer, pastries, pizza, and more from time to time. It's just that most of the time, I'm enjoying something like a ribeye steak with broccoli and mushrooms pan-fried in butter. I'd certainly call that "living," but different people have different tastes.

No, not at all. I'd say it's quite the opposite, especially when it comes to insulin. If you are eating only once per day, you are putting a lot less stress on your digestive system and your whole body than if you eat multiple meals per day, especially meals that are high in carbohydrate.

Almost everything has been covered already. It's diet mostly. Less calories consumed than your body requires to maintain. I will say this, listen to Zefah and you'll be good to go.

I don't think someone who cuts them out will NEVER eat that stuff again, it's simply not a part of their regular diet. I cut out rice/bread/pasta about 4 years ago but when I go to family gatherings or parties, I'll eat whatever. I had pizza the other day (birthday party) and it was delicious. First time I've had pizza since December

Rice is delicious. So are potatoes.

Low carb works great for many. But you can be fit and lean with them in your life.

I can't quit potatoes or pasta. I can however leave beer for my cheat day (Fridays) and am doing that as of now. Water the rest of the week. We'll see what happens.

tbh I don't know if my gut flora has changed or something but I get bloaty as fuck whenever I eat refined carbs now. Bread/pasta also gives me headaches and the runs to a lesser extent. It's pretty easy to avoid them when that happens, but I still do eat them here and there because of deliciousness.

No reason to feel bad about eating whole foods. Beer is crazy counterproductive though (if it's a lot).

don't quit them.

just treat them as the rare rewards they should be!

(also: portion size is a big one. a side pasta in Italy is NOT what you get at Olive Garden. besides variety trumps amount in my experience)

When I went down from about 280 to 180, I mainly just reduced my caloric intake. Cardio is an obvious plus too.

I wish I would have incorporated some weight training though while I was losing the weight. If possible, I would try to include some of that as well.

Thanks, I actually started the 16-8 routine today to see how I handle it over the weekend. Though, I'm not sure how well I'll do during the week with work/commute :/

So man time flies by, it's been a whole week since I posted this thread! So I took some bits of info from all the posts here and even if I didn't respond directly to a post I read all of em because I'm really FINALLY starting to get serious about losing weight. In a week I still haven't fell off the wagon and as a matter of fact I'm at 285! I dropped another 3 pounds! So thanks to you all for the help I'm still gonna post every week, unless it annoys a mod then I'll stop, but I'm still on track to keep losing weight. I've added in fasting on Sundays (I'm Buddhist but I'm not doing it for religious reasons) to clean out my body a bit. I've upped my walking to at least an hour a day, but have removed the calisthenics, to go with "weight lifting," honestly my own weight, I've been doing squats, push ups, jumping jacks, crunches, reverse crunches, and wall push ups too. I still have a gym membership but I'm not gonna start going back to the gym till probably second week of September or until I drop to under 280. Also on a personal note I got a chicks number! And I might be getting offered a way better and more lucrative job! So seriously thank you all for posting and I'm gonna do my best to not disappoint you GAF! Keep holding out for that before/after porn.

Never understood the logic behind "don't eat carbs, eat fat instead".

So... Eating fat makes you loose weight?
The science behind it in laymens terms, and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, is your body prioritizes using carbohydrates for energy, if you don't eat any carbohydrates your body will then fall onto burning fat instead and combine that with a caloric deficit and exercise and you're burning a lot more fat than what you eat.

The nice thing about IF is that you start to get less hungry during your fasts over time. Going a day without food doesn't bother me much anymore. Doesn't seem to affect my workouts either.

And when you do eat everything is 10 times tastier than it used to be.

Eating post workout after 16+ hour fast is pretty great.

For the past 6-7 months ive been practically on a IF Keto diet! Today i started doing TKD = some carbs 20-30 min before working out!

Ive never been so ripped in my life for a consistent time. I used to gain everything back in a few months.

2 weeks ago i went to Napoli. Ate pizza and ice cream 5 days straight! Once i was back home the scale said +5KG. 3 days later -1KG.

I think I recognize you from a previous similar thread, but eating primarily fat to satiety without consuming carbs (this is very important) will absolutely lead to the mobilization of body fat stores for energy and thus lead to a reduction in body fat. The changes will be very rapid for most people, I would wager.

Intermittent fasting + running cardio warm ups (2.5-3 km) + slope sprints + calisthenics works really well for me.
