Burnout Paradise (next gens): first HD teaser!

To the guys who gives the so very tired excuse of the game being open-ended excuse of why the game is underwhelming. Did you guys play midtown madness 3 on XBox lastgen? That game looked great, had intensive traffic and was open ended. Only problem was that it was 30fps. However, a lot of games were.

No one gets to use the "open-ended" excuse now that we've seen GTA IV, but I'll get over crappy graphics. I'd still buy this game if it looked like Burnout Revenge. I <3 Burnout.

you need glasses. or you should play burnout revenge 360 at least...
are you saying that what we see looks worse than Revenge? all we can compare is the environment, the lighting and the main car because that's all we have to compare.

as for you telling me to go play burnout revenge 360...

the gamertag is plagiarize. why not go see if i've played it.

Im sure the full game will look good, Even burnout revenge on 360 was a port and it didnt look bad at all IMO.

Hey Blim, it's me again with my QT pimping.

I've noticed that your MP4 version is 2x the size of the MOV file, and I remember you said you have problems encoding MP4 in good quality.

In the case of H264 encoding, if you have an MOV file, you essentially have an MP4 as well. You can open the MOV in the Quicktime, select export, and in the settings for the video select "Pass Through". Settings for the audio can be something reasonable, like 192kbps AAC or whatever you prefer.

This way, I got MP4 from your MOV file, and the resulting file was the same size and the same quality as the MOV (which is actually a bit better than your twice as big MP4), and the conversion lasts just 10 seconds or so, because the video is not actually being converted but just coped over into a new video container.

Also, I was wondering what are you using to convert WMV to MOV? I'd like to try to convert this into a bordeless MOV/MP4 file that preserves the original WMV resolution. That way on PS3 it can be zoomed to fill the whole screen.

Marc: are you able to download mp4 files from blim's site using your ps3 web browser? I used to be able to but I can't anymore. His links just get hung up on a loading screen.

Yeah, I can't do it anymore either.

Wait, i'm a little confused by the dissapointment in this thread. I thought the trailer looked pretty damn impressive. You have to keep a few things in context here. This game WILL run at 60fps. All of Criterion's games do. This game is an open world style setup. In that context, I think it looks awesome.

I also realize the game is 5 months away from shipping, and it's gonna look a bit better by that time. I think in the end the game is gonna impress people immensely.

The lighting and shadows cast over the cars was my favorite element from this trialer. :)
This looks awesome. I too am confused by the disappointment. They didn't even show a single crash! I remember Alex Ward saying that if the crashes didn't blow you away or the gameplay then they're not doing they're job.

Plus it will hopefully be one of the few 60 fps games coming out to PS3/360

You mean traffic checking? Shit are they really considering ditching that??

IMO traffic checking ruined the game. You weren't on edge as much weaving through traffic.

Looks pretty good to me.

While there's aliasing in the trailer, the texture artifacting is because of lack of mip mapping or possibly a negative texture LOD.

I wonder if the PS3 version will really be that much better (like that guy said in the interview)? Because if they're similar, I'll buy the 360 version just for the custom soundtracks.

Going by the amount of aliasing, I suppose that's taken from the PS3 version.

Next gen bitches!
The hell?

So you are making a statement that all PS3 games are going to by aliased simply based on your experience with Ninja Gaiden?! There are some incredibly clean games on PS3. While certainly nothing special, Genji II has quite possibly the best image quality of any next-gen console game to date (gobs of AA and AF). Resistance is very clean as well.

There is variation per game on both machines. DOA4 on 360 had many of the same problems as Sigma (lots of shader and texture aliasing).

If traffic checking is in, I hope it will be more refined. In SP of BO4 the AI couldn't even check traffic to take you out. It made the whole feature, well not pointless, but it didn't add a lot when difficulty is concerned.

Maybe it wowed the people that were easily impressed by the constant barrage of the sights and sounds that come with loads of cars flying around. But in my occasion it resulted in quickly becoming indifferent to it all.

The possibility to be only able to shunt a car from the side (also a bit more realistic) would be a way to make things more challenging. It would most certainly make the whole ordeal an accomplishment compared to BO4. Maybe limiting the mount of times cars that can be checked, could be a solution too. Put it under a button and limit it, just like the boost in BO2 was limited.

Definitely not what I expected from Criterion but still looks pretty good IMO - at least the game is 60fps...I'm sure the game will look even better when it'll come out.

Oh and btw
Burnout 2 > Burnout 3. :P

Strangely enough, both EA and IGN and all the other sites are literally doing framegrabs from the HD trailer. Why they hell EA would do that themselves, I have no f'ing clue.

the funny thing is he has a MGS4 avatar :lol oh god gaf is so funny sometimes.

remember also, this game is one of the fastest racers out there, the graphics will look much better @ highspeeds, im 100% sure of this.

WOW that looked friggin awesome. 60fps, great color, great lighting. if it's more free-roaming than past burnouts, wowow. this game on either console is SO going to kick PGR4's ass.

Not really.

Strange dissapointment reactions in this thread....
It's the same situation as with DoAX2 - a cocky developer's says how much he's pushing the hardware and how awesome it is, but it is only pretty. This + overuse of bloom make disappointment reactions.

Give it a rest already, gnat. Most of the cockiness has referenced scale and impact, not as you would imply simply surface qualities.

IMO that just made it a more fun experience. A traffic check takedown in hi def at eight billion MPH was just ****ing gorgeous.

I skipped revenge to wait for the real next gen burnout
Man I really hope this turns out good
You missed out on one of the best arcade racing games i've ever played.

Congratulations!

No.

Wow, surprised to see so many unimpressed. Well, not really. :P

I think the game looks really good in motion. The models are nice, and the lighting and shadowing look excellent.

Seeing as they totally underdelivered with Black, I'm taking Ward's comments with piece of salt. But we can comment on Burnout's graphics now.

Congratulations!

i played a bit of revenge, i probably would've liked it fine but I liked the difficulty of 3 a little more so it wasn't hard to skip it

It's a common misconception that Burnout Revenge was SO much easier than Burnout 3. Well, if you played it enough to get to the later parts of the single player mode, you'd find the game got every difficult. Just like it did in Burnout 3.
