Bustin’ Makes Me Feel Good – The Official Ghostbusters: The Video Game Thread

I've been playing the PS3 version all day. As a fan of the movies since I was like 6 (i'm 29 now), this game is everything I wanted it to be. Dialogue, atmosphere, easter eggs (GOD the easter eggs!) and a really unique and fun control scheme/play mechanic for the ghost catching.

I'm very very satisfied.

Just picked this up, so stoked! Played only the training mission so far, but man I love it. Don't rely on my impressions to persuade you, I'm a total fanboy here. Just a warning. More later.

Anyone else disappointed that the neutrino wands aren't connected to the proton packs in the wii version? Why?? Too hard to program?

I wonder if we will ever get away from the "hahaha look how primitive games were" bullshit. Ghostbusters on the C64 was a very fun game for its time.

Thats what I thought when I read that. Soured my entire opinion of the article right away.

The C64 game was really fun. I considered it one of the best licensed games for a long time. The SMS version is way, way, WAY better. Thats the version I grew up with. Much improved graphics, it feels better, and the platforming segment after the marshmellow man is really fleshed out. Great game.

It was the first time I can remember having to LEARN how to play the game. As in, the game mechanics weren't apparently at first, nor could they just be picked up. It was the first game I had to read the manual to understand.

I remember looking at the back of the box for YEARS wondering how to get to the marshmellow man game. It took me a long time to understand how to properly play the game.

Everyone knocks it because of the dopamine rewards they get when they repeat Angry Nintendo Nerd's trashing of the poor NES port, but I played the Sega Master System version as a kid and really enjoyed it. It was one of my influences when I did the original design for the DS version of the game.

I was always surprised that the AVGN didn't like Ghostbusters. Considering his whole schtick is that he played tons of games growing up, I'd expected him to have loved it when he was younger.

I hate that he reviewed it, too, because the game went from being an unknown, unappreciated game to being "SHIT ON A CARTRIDGE LAWL" from people who have never played it for more than 5 minutes.

Had this game, played it, and BEAT it when it came out back in the 80s. It's not an exaggeration to say that game was truly, truly terrible, bordering on unplayable.

which version? Because I'll agree with that assessment of the NES version.

the C64 and especially the SMS version? Then you're exaggerating out the ass.

Man is the PS3 version as bad as all this talk makes it sound like? I preordered it on PS3 cuz of all the extras and freebees and the talk of it being lead platform from the developer, but now I'm starting to wonder if I should have gotten the 360 one. So is it really that bad?

Getting the Wii version for my birthday, cannot wait :D

In terms of gameplay, firing off your neutrona wand is what this game is all about. When you first get started, you'll have a Proton Pack to call your own and be set loose on a ton of environments that are yours to destroy. Yes, the table-smashing, book-burning fun and destruction that initially caught people's eye on the PS3 and 360 has been carried over to the Wii and looks great. Holding down the B button and laying waste to a ballroom via the Wii-mote is pretty satisfying.

Started this game the other night. Woke up this morning needing to play it. Finished it the same morning.

The game was short, but fun throughout. Some of the puzzles annoyed me, but otherwise the combat was fun, and the humor and writing was top-notch.

Tried the online, only a few people playing obviously, but it was enjoyable, though not something I see myself playing much.

If you're a fan of the movies, you need this game. Period.

Just beat the game... probably clocked in at about 10 hours.
Absolutely loved the campaign. It wasn't too long, but it was damn enjoyable. The writing was top-notch, and the story blended very well with the first 2 movies. Lots of fan service, and being a huge Ghostbusters fan (I bought the Ghostbusters outfit on Home >.<), I ate all that shit up.

Graphically, it's stunning. It's unfortunate that the game has some low-res(ish) textures that mar the beauty of particular scenes (towards the end of the game). There are some scenes that are really impressive, tech-wise as well (debris/book pages/etc. flying everywhere - wow; hall of mirrors fight - wow x2). The lip synching could've used some work, though - but the faces of the characters are rendered very well. Also, for some reason the devs chose to use videos rather than the in-game engine for a lot of the cutscenes (RE4 PS2 style). It's so stupid, considering that the cutscenes that are rendered in-game look fantastic and even better than the cutscene movies half the time (no video artifacts, etc.). Ugh.

Gameplay-wise, it was easier than I hoped. There are some parts where you don't know what you have to do initially and will result in getting wiped a few times, but aside from those handful of moments, I didn't really have much difficulty in this game.
The boss battles are fun and sights to behold, but again, once you realize what you have to do, they're fairly easy.

Anyway, I've yet to play Multiplayer because it seems the servers are still down - I've yet to find a game.

Even without multiplayer I feel like I've got my money's worth. I'm going for a second playthrough right now to find the rest of the artifacts and scan some more ghosts. :D I can't imagine how much fun multiplayer will be with 3 friends bustin ghosts with me.

Bustin' makes me feel good!

Can you pick Professional from the start or is it something you earn after beating the game?
You can pick it from the start.

So, it sounds like the PC version gets no multiplayer and no DLC support.

Ouch if that's the case.
yeah. that price tag makes a lot more sense now.

still, i'm going to pick it up on PC for the best graphics... but yeah. wow. lame. a different company to terminal reality made the multiplayer component.

terminal reality properly optimised their half of the game, and added new graphical effects and stuff... and the people doing the multiplayer did fuck all.

i can blame Atari for that right?

edit: the only two reviews up for the PC version talk about multiplayer... but i'm taking nothing from them. they're just cut and paste multiformat reviews. i wouldn't be surprised if the sites in question hadn't even tried the PC version.

Finished the game on Professional last night, with 100% ghost analysis. Man, some very frustrating bits at the end
FU one-shot-killing flaming cherubs in the cemetary
, mostly thanks to the lengthy mission reload times... Watch 30 second dialog, play 30 seconds, get killed, wait 30 seconds for load, repeat until successful.

Definitely more fun on Normal difficulty though. It was a fun experience overall as a GB fan, but seriously, don't play on hard unless you want to be annoyed.

Any reason to play on harder difficulties outside of achievements? Are there unlockables relating to finishing on the harder modes?

I'm really on the fence here. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise but I did like the cartoons and movies as a kid. I'm just not so sure how good the game really is and reviews are suggesting that it's good but not fantastic. Will there be a demo?

What is the PS3 exclusive content? With all the ps3 talk the devs were spouting I would've thought it would at least look as good as 360. Now I need to see what else is different from the two versions.

Qbert is *NOT* playable ....

I would suggest talking some time to walk around the GB Hq ... Found a lot of cool, old school items ie -- Commodore 64. I don't want to ruin it for anyone else playing.

Game is fantastic! (360 played & finished).

So played the shit out of this all weekend and still found time to go out and drink, so yea its pretty short. Perfect for me though. This game is a Ghostbusters fan's dream come true and would be worthy of being called Ghostbusters 3.

The writing is fantastic and funny.

I played the game on Professional difficulty and there are some minor annoyances, like your AI partners getting knocked out a lot and you having to revive them rather than bust ghosts. Once you figure out what to do, all is good...I never found anything ridiculously difficult. Gonna be playing some Multiplayer and try to get as much of the achievements as I can.

Totally biased impressions as I love GB so much.

What is different between the Wii and 360 versions of the game?

I'm curious about the game, but the only real options I have just now are buy at a high price from the local store who states he has Xbox 360 copies (although whether or not they are imports is not clear); buy region free 360 from from vgp.ca for 2/3 rds of the price or the Wii version for half the price and I try to boot it with GeckoOS, which is a brave new world to me.

I'll try to find this game today, I got lucky with Prototype and bought it last monday, I'm hoping my local store breaks street date again.:D

Alright, alright already! You guys talked me into buying this, and so I went to Amazon to find out that not only was the game ~$53, but would be on my doorstep tomorrow due to free release day delivery! *hugs Amazon Prime*

Also picked up the Ghostbusters blu-ray. I ain't afraid of no ghost, no sir.

over the past few months I went through every episode of the Real Ghostbusters Cartoon in preparation for this, minus 12 episodes of Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters cuz those were pure shit. Last night I watched Ghostbusters 1 and tonight I'll be watching GB 2.

CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME!!!! I'll be getting the 360 and Wii versions

Finished this over the weekend. Wow guys. What a blast. Even people who have no idea what Ghostbusters is would have a good time with this game. Its like a crazy carnival funhouse. My favorite level was def the
Library
:D

I love how it really feels like a sequel to the movies.

My main gripes are the somewhat short campiagn length, though thats somewhat nullified with the multi added in. The framerate chugged at some parts but it never was unplayable, and the one and only slideshow framerate happened when I got blasted in a huge explosion with tons of stuff going on on screen and I was knocked down when this happened anyways so it didnt really effect my gameplay. Once I was up on my feet the framerate was back to normal. Also while they use the movies soundtrack and its AWESOME. They really overuse some of them too much.

Overall a solid game and I will def replay this. Tons of nice setpeices in the game as well but I won't spoil those for you.:D

Bustin does indeed make me feel good!

I didn't realize it, but apparently the Wii version is a lot cheaper than the PS360 versions. PS360 at $60, Wii at $40. Amazon currently has them at $54 and $36 respectively.

Though it's fair to note someone was saying earlier in the thread that the PC version is even cheaper.

EDIT: And the PS2 version is only $20. What an incredible range.

Where did you guys find it early?

Regardless, I'll have it tomorrow, woohoo!

Got mine on Friday from a friend in New York. His local gameshop got it in on Wednesday. He shipped me a copy all the way to Arizona! :D

kinda bummed its a 10hour game

oh well

Seriously though, if your a Ghostbusters fan. This is a game your going to want to replay. Its just too damn funny, keeps the spirit of the films, and is just a fun ride.

If I had to rate it, as just a gamer, its a solid 8 imo but as a Ghostbusters fan I easily place it as a 9.
