DOA has done ok in my book. They make Zack a buffoon who get's all da ladies.

I meant more that in rare cases it can just come down to the art direction rather than a more nefarious scheme.

Yeah, my bad. I just didn't want to be misleading.

In cases like this, I like the quote "Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence." Or in some cases, unwavering stubbornness about maintaining a certain aesthetic.

A lot of things have to come together to make a character, and then to make that character properly interact with their world. I've not run into a single decision that was cut and dry. It's a lot of testing certain aspects, finding out something doesn't blend right, or certain colors clash with certain parts of the world and have a strange almost optical illusion effect, and having to go back and tweak.

Dark colors and red have given me the biggest headaches. I've come to hate the color red.

Every time I'm given the option to create a character I make a black female just because I know I won't run into many others, therefore making me unique. I like being unique.

Too many games force me to be white male. In GTA V online I must have run into thousands of other players before I finally saw another black female avatar. I can still count the number I've run into on one hand after nearly a year.

So now, people aren't "black enough"? What's next? Characters in games that aren't gay enough? Women characters not feminine enough? Clowns that aren't funny enough?
This thread is about lightening characters that were originally darker skin. Come correct

In hindsight they just should have switched Chris with Sheva entirely.

i would have taken anything to keep resident evil 5 playing out like the first few trailers.
I think it was adam sessler that went on a huge racism row at e3 after seeing the trailers, most gaming forums were debating it as well.
The gaming community did an already troubled capcom no favours. Chris was in africa, i repeat africa, of course the enemies will be mostly dark skinned.

As a black character artist, illustrating Negroes is quite the interesting challenge. Especially Negro females, because there's the challenge in making the beauty standout amongst the dark brown, gold, and bronze, and even in some cases black. You really have to be able to understand the beauty and appeal of black women to bring that emphasis out.

On a side note. Chocolate Mai is OP.

Man if I could get a color edit in DOA5 Imagine chocolate Nyo Tengu......

This is one problem I have with games. The character selection process in games is fucked up when it comes to skin tone. Most games either have corndog brown or Saharan limbo dark. With that, they also exaggerate facial features on these games, like Dark Souls for example.

Wait, you're saying a pirate who spends her life traveling on the seas wouldn't have a tan?

Fair point, but why would it dissappear when she turned into Princess Zelda, I just thought it was a silly way to throw off suspecting her true identity at the time.

But why her and not the others? How does making her skin lighter to match her mo-cap actor improve the game?

Does keeping her dark improve the game? In the end it's all up to the artists and how they want it. I doubt it has anything to do with being "TOO BLACK". I can already where this thread is heading.

To give off the "princess" image? She's not a black person going white, it's just a girl losing her tan to show that she's a princess that stays in her palace, instead of sailing around getting sun tanned.

Isn't Jade supposed to be the sister of Kitana? She's also in a franchise that has an extremely strong Asian atmosphere to it. I have a tough time getting upset about that one, the other examples are a lot better IMO (especially Vanessa, chick got Loreal Beyonce-fied).

Did the fading tan also result in her muscles becoming less toned?

Maybe she was bed-ridden for months on end? (Just a suggestion, not a fact)

How about her hair, is that naturally white?

...We don't talk about that game D:

Or the infinitely more likely solution of her being whitewashed hardcore; I doubt Vanessa has time to do spray tanning while punching people in the gut over and over again :p

And thus her tan went away. She obviously got the tan before she started punching away.

Blackanese Mai is OP as hell!
Chocolate Nyo Tengu would be going too far. Since she is mrs Kstoute.

What effect does it have exactly?

Well, seeing as the thread was about minority characters with darker skin in the concept art or original incarnation later having lighter skin... I'd say that.

Was that a factitious question?

Naive? People are forgetting it's concept art which can drastically change. So what if she's a bit light skinned does it really affect anything?

If it didn't effect something or someone, it wouldn't have been changed.

I don't agree on Vanessa and Jade. I don't think I really ever saw Vanessa as black, but it is a shame they made her lighter in VF5.

Jade is not black. Even in other media she is portrayed as asian. She looks more Pacific Islander than black.

Elena looks more japanese than black, but that could be an artstyle thing.

I think Sheva looks fine.

With the above being said though, I do agree that there is a lack of realistic looking black characters.

She is actually supposed to represent Kenya but does a Brazilian martial art called capoeira. It almost feels like midway through her design Capcom realized they flubbed region and martial art mash up so they decided to make her look a bit like both cultures. Could be way off but thats how she looks to me. Like a brazilian/kenyan mashup.

All of these examples of women are pretty bad but lets not pretend that black men are not horribly misrepresented in gaming. Most African American male characters are grossly stereotypical to the point of being borderline comedic.

Elena (SFIV) and Vanessa (VFIV) character designs are kind of gross. I thought SF3 Elena was much better because it made her resemble an actual human being instead of some alien life form.

Vanessa in VF5 is kind of an anomaly. Those eye brows. God. I definitely think there could of been some better middle ground, but it didn't work out too well.

I'm going to say it again. The Jade example is funny because in the old digitised games she has the same actor as Kitana so its actually a blacked up character if she is black.

What really bothers me is the complete lack of skin tones and hair options for black characters in games that you can create a character. Especially hair. Your only options are typically: bald, very short fuzz hair, short hair, mini afro, afro, corn rows, and dreads if you are lucky. Why not different fade options? Why no flat top? Shouldn't it be a lot easier to model these than flowing hair?

Again, there's nothing wrong with light skinned folks, it's when people purposefully lighten people to make them more acceptable that is the issue.

Nah dude, even with the filters disabled on PC Sheva looks incredibly just "tan"

My mother is lighter than that, and we're African American. -_- I'm more offended by the notion that lighter skin tones aren't possible and are just tan..
