"...but just don't make her TOO black."

There's a difference between "large breasts" like the ones that appear in DOA titles and actual realistically proportioned large breasts. For example Fetch has large breasts.

I think I'm probably the only one who thinks the breasts in DOA aren't all that huge.... especially compared to Soul Calibur.

I've seen black people in real life with this skin tone.

That doesn't look "tan" to me at all. Her in-game model for whatever reason is certainly lighter than her concept art, but she's still definitely black.

...What? That's a legit skin tone. Half of my family has that exact skin tone, some even lighter than that.

My mother is lighter than that, and we're African American. -_- I'm more offended by the notion that lighter skin tones aren't possible and are just tan..

I should clarify, I mean in comparison to the concept art.

I think the problem is not so much "is their skin dark or light" theres plenty of lighter skinned African people out there.

The problem I have is that some people think "race" is just a matter of moving the color slider around, Shevas final model was disappointing because her facial features where very whitewashed. So many African characters are given white people features (nose, eyes, mouth, etc) with dark skin that it looks completely out of place.

Sometimes this goes both ways too. Try making a caucasian in NBA 2K.
Sheva looks pretty much exactly like the actress she's based on, so I don't think her facial features got white washed.

I'm beginning to have a new appreciate for Valve and their visual depictions of non-white characters.

Though I'd argue that Coach and Rochelle were characters to begin with, but still, they're distinctly black and aren't light-skinned. I don't see that all that much.

yeah but then you have Alyx...

L4D2 had great characters though. LOVED Rochelle.

Obviously bleaching characters is stupid and ridiculous, but looking at these images

tumblr_mwcfzs76WY1qeuiqyo1_400.gif

made me think that maybe one possible reason for black skins not being too dark is because details tend to be a lot less evident and the face look more plain, now think in dark games like most of the AAA games.
I joked about that on the last page but I do think it holds a bit of weight. I'm offended by how poorly peoples TVs tend to be calibrated. A shit LCD with no calibration will absolutely destroy any detail when dealing with darker colors. I can imagine that, to some degree, character looks could be influenced by looking at what type of display is being used.

You can't make horror games in the mold of Silent Hill anymore for this reason (heavy use of darkness is destroyed by poor black levels in modern TVs).

Not saying it's a legit reason politically but technically it might matter a bit. That's why the VF example is funny to me as VF4 was designed for displays with good black levels why VF5 was not.

There are women that have breasts just as large and larger than women in DOA. My point still holds. And again, there are examples of characters changing to lighter tones between iterations of games.
I'm purely talking about RE5. I'm never played whatever game Vanessa is in, I did notice that she follows the trend of black character has extremely light hair/white though.

"Straighten that hair, make the bridge of the nose a little smaller..."

I dunno I think they did

Capcom shit 6 bricks after N'Gai called their portrayal of Africans in RE5 (based on a trailer) racist and they stripped back everything to to appease his disgusting poisonous mouth. Sheva was a victim of this as she was whitened, she'd actually not even been shown at this point which makes it even more bizarre.
But i'm not blaming Capcom, I blame that self publicizing asshole for it all.

They're both ridiculous and are awful examples of how to model large breasts in video games.

But here's the thing, concept art is just that, concept. Tons of things can change during development especially when it comes to modeling. Choosing an actress to base a character model that will be seen at all times by the player takes alot of work and thought.

Looks like they changed her nose to me, might just be the angle though.

The hair straightening at least is something you can explain away as being easier to render (and also something a ton of black women do, although probably not in Africa..).

Is this just done unconscious or are devs just cynical and believe this will sell more for some reason.

I got nothing against multiracial characters (since I'm one myself) but if its done just not to make a caracther TOO black its just stupid.

Hard to see a reason for a character to have it's skin tone lightened with time outside of a MJ game.

EA sucks at this, playing NFL if you are a owner you can either chose black or white, and when creating a player your skin tone is associated with a preset face and hair (they are probably just trying to push their face scan service).

To be fair, Jade's current color is the same as her first appearance in MK2 (so she was only black during the MK3 series). But yeah, this is definitely a thing, and it seems to be a widespread media issue.

I don't like the "Sheva isn't ethnic enough" argument. As someone pointed out, she looks similar to her voice actress, and she's so clearly not a white character, which is what they could have gone with if they had no imagination whatsoever. I think she looks terrific; I've always loved her design. Of the problems RE5 has, which exist, Sheva's design is the last of my worries.

I agree though with your general sentiment that characters in games should be more diverse. That's pretty obvious.

Marketing is huge business. Not a single thing is unconsciously done.

Her hair is probably the type of hair tech they don't have.

"We could spend more money working on how to make this hair work, or we could just keep people like that out of our games and save money."

So they flubbed twice because more than half of Brazilian population is black.

Wikipedia says 6.84% to 7.6% Black

Multiracial is officially a different category. As it should be, because that's the definition of multi-race... otherwise whites, ameri-indians, asians, could all claim to be part of the percentages too

The only legit reason I can think of is, again, the types of displays being used by people. An overly dark character won't work well on a poorly calibrated LCD display. Fact. That might also explain why concept art changes as, once a character is implemented, their color might be altered to work best on a wide variety of displays.

Good luck modeling that hair, specially on last gen.
Another good point. This stuff isn't trivial.

There's a reason why "bald marines" were so popular.

Karen Dyer doesn't really look like that. Really odd picture. Anyways, you can judge for yourself.

She's not that far off in most of the pictures.

Vanessa is by far the worst. It looks like they tried to give her more of an Asian appearance with not only the skin tone, but the eyes. Perhaps Japanese players disliked her look?
I recall reading years ago that Crash Bandicoot's eyes were changed for the Japanese release, because they looked too Western.

Shiva I think looks fine.

1. RE 5

2. VF

3. MK
This whole thread is misleading.

1. RE 5 wasnt changed. She was based on an Actress and yes the shitty filter makes everything lighter there are plenty of examples in this thread

2. Now this one IMO has a reason behind it. Now I may get in a bit of trouble for this but I never thought she was black I always thought she did those body building tan things
EXAMPLE Warning Bikini Woman

3. She isnt that white in game at all :s that last image is misleading.

Her skin tone and actual face was based off of the actress, not every little detail like hair. It's not as drastic a change from the concept art like say
KLAZaQXC7OQ.jpg

And apparently the actor's hair looks straight. ._.

Never played RE5, there is any zombie/character with the same skin tone as her?

Zombies, not especially, some early ones are very dark, most of the rest are very pale (a sort of blueish skin tone due to the infection). Less sure about the NPCs but there aren't very many.

I'm legit shook so many people are thinking Vanessa was tanning. I just...I don't

I was just looking for this picture to post. I thought it was very odd that Delsin went from looking very native american to .... not.

Anita Sarkeesian is about as rational as you can get.

I don't think so. Sometimes she makes decent arguments and even have some things you can learn about that you may not have noticed, but for each of those times it feels like she's grasping for straws. I don't have anything against her, but from watching her past vids, I believe there are some things she could improve on.

I'd rather have someone who can conduct a strong and solid argument that covers all angles to represent myself and my people.

By that I mean they have to be multidimensional and willing to challenge everything including themselves.

This is a big problem, not just with games, but media representation, and life in general. The only way for a black woman to be considered attractive is well to look more like a white woman. I want people to see how women like Lupita for example are just as beautiful. Loved Sheva in RE5, wish she did'nt change as much from concept to final, but she does look like her actress.

On another note, it still annoys me that people think Clementine (TWD) isn't black.

Another dark hottie from Bioware <3

More of this please :)

A lot of native brazilians are of West African descent. The stat you posted specifically accounts for people indentifying as Afro-brazilians if I'm not mistaken.

Man if I can have chocolate Nyo Tengu, I'd marry my game disc.

This is pretty interesting.

------------------------------

To continue on with the topic, it's a multi-faceted discussion, and can't be lead up to just one argument which itself isn't wrong either because there are plenty of cases where media tones down on darker tones.

But there's also the thing with lighting and revealing faces. However I think Platinum and Grasshopper Manufacture are one of the few devs that do Black characters pretty damn well. Also the team behind Vindictus. Hurk would be GOAT if it wasn't for Baron.

Also here's a picture of Shinobu.

Even looking at this you can see that there are methods to bringing out her face which is the challenges with dark skin by using hair color and make up.

Also- What the fuck is Nidalee?

Which game is Shinobu from?

The reason that cole mcgrath is bald is because it's easier to render that, I don't think that even the ps4 at launch would handle that hair if it was decently simulated in an open world game. Also Delsin at some point was modeled after Troy Baker, characters go through tons of iterations before a final look is chosen.
Infamous-Delsin-Troy.png

In hindsight, the only character who has animated hair is Fetch. Tradeoffs. Infamous in general is a series that has had tons of early concept art that looks drastically different from the final in-game renders.

On another note, it still annoys me that people think Clementine (TWD) isn't black.

Not to make this an echo chamber, but I've gotten too many comments on how she must have some white in her family because of her skin tone.

That whole discussion is jarring to me because, after seeing a picture of her parents
and we'll leave the spoilers to that
, folks feel like they have to question her because her skin is light. Her mother was light skinned and that should be enough, but nope.

What's wrong with considering light skinned black women more attractive? I think pale skin looks better on women of any race, it's more delicate and feminine.
