Buying a Wii U for Zelda BoTW,good or bad idea ?

I'd only do it if you can get a really good price for one. The Wii U has a lot of good games, but it's basically a dead system at this point and the Switch is a better investment considering how strong the library will be by the end of the year.
LOL? I own a WiiU, and if someone offered one for 50 bucks I'd buy a second one in a heartbeat.

OP, I'd honestly say that it depends on how you like to play games. First and foremost is the form factor of Switch vs Wii-U. Being able to take Zelda with me everywhere I go has been amazing thus far!
After that, I'd say think about what games you want to play and when. If you're ok with working through the Wii-U's backlog, its definitely cheaper to go that route. If you want BoTW and Nintendo's newest titles first and foremost, Switch is best because Wii-U support has now dried up.
I bought a Wii-U near launch and loved all of the games I was able to play on it, but I wouldn't personally buy one today. That being said, I'm also not really the type to fire up old tech to play games. I'd much rather play games via VC/BC on newer hardware.

Bad idea, I loved the Wii U but I personally believe a lot of it's noteworthy library will be ported to switch in time.
If I had to buy a system I would get a Switch because it has a future.

I have a strong Wii U library and the system has seen a lot of use from everyone in the family. Some nights we had to fight on who was going to get to play the game they wanted. If you wanted a system that has a good back library you son't be disappointed in the WiiU in you like Nintendo 1st party, some great 2nd party support and the occasional 3rd party find. But it will be a time capsule.

Which would be the same as if someone was buying games for any other platform not being actively supported.
IMO a Wii U is worth it even now but at the right price. Case in point, and to repeat something I posted in a similar thread today, yesterday I bought a black 32gb Wii U with Mario 3d world, Nintendoland, and Mario Kart 8 for $150 . If you can grab a deal like that or better, then I believe it's worth it. I certainly wouldn't invest $200( like what Nintendo is selling it for on their site) unless it came with a shit-ton of games and/or accessories.
You know I am gonna be pissed when Mario Odyssey drops.

A WiiU and its library of 25ish games that you can now get for cheap is a much better investment than the Switch and its single game that is also on the WiiU.
By the time the Switch has another game worth buying, you can play and enjoy a ton of other games on the WiiU.

It's weirdly hit and miss for people, but in retrospect it feels like some kind of Breath of the Wild prototype to me. I loved it when it came out already by the way, put well over 80 hours into it but never finished it. I hope I get to eventually.

I'd say it's honestly worth waiting for stock to show up if you're that close to buying a Switch.

But for a premium price. The Wii U has all those amazing games existing right now at second-hand prices. The Switch has Zelda, period. There's nothing wrong with playing a console generation after it died, it's actually great financially. (I'm saying this as a WiiU owner who bought a Switch day one).
Future-proofing is costly with no direct return on investment. Playing last-gen is not trendy but very cheap and instant.

If you can get one for cheap enough, it's a worthwhile system. Splatoon, Tropical Freeze, 3D World, Bayonetta 2, and Captain Toad made it more than worthwhile for me.
Most used listings I've seen are around $200 though, and that point I think you're better off springing the extra bit for a Switch. I'm willing to bet many of the standout Wii U titles have a high chance of getting ported since many people never experienced them on the Wii U.

It's a very difficult question to answer. The Wii U has a small amount of games, but what's there is mostly pure gold. In terms of single player exclusives:
Pikmin 3
Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Bayonetta 2
Kirby
Paper Mario Colour Splash
Project Zero Maiden of Black Water
Xenoblade Chronicles X
The Wonderful 101
New Super Mario Bros.
Captain Toad

These games are all varying levels of great, and all exclusive.
Mainly - hardware breaks, cheap unit to replace the main one.
Realistically though, set it up with Bayo1 in one and Bayo2 in the other.
who knows how long it will last though?
It sounds like based off the reporting from different regions that Nintendo has sold around 1 million or so Switches so far and they said they will ship 2 million by the end of March.
I think there's a good chance we'll see a few restocks throughout the rest of the month unless they hit production problems.
Make sure to beat it before Xenoblade 2.

If you have any interest in a collector system, Wii U is great for legacy content. With Wii U, you can play every main Zelda game except for 5 (Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, A Link Between Worlds, and TriForce Heroes).

If you're not planning to get Switch anytime soon you should definitely go for it. Breath of the Wild alone is worth it and like many said Wii U has an amazing library of games.

If you're really interested in it's other games sure, but if you just want to play zelda right now I'd wait to get the switch.

I suspect alot of people are going to be dumping their Wii U for the Switch, so now's a great time to check out your local CL or similar classified. The person wanted $175 and I talked them down to $150. I mean , I got a good deal but not nothing that couldn't be found elsewhere with a little bit of hunting around.
Aw man, I'd stay away from that, but your call.
When you create a Nintendo Network ID, you can tie it to 1 Wii U and 1 3DS.
You can then use it for digital purchases.
You can NOT untie it once it's tied. All other accounts on the same Wii U and 3DS can use the games too that where purchased on the tied hardware.
BUT!!
Customer Service can remote detach an NNID from the Wii U. If the seller really wants to dick you over, they could. I don't assume they'll buy a new Wii U, so there's no incentive to do that for them unless they just want to troll.
Just make sure they give you username and password of the NNID or assign your email, so you don't lose access.

This is what I'm doing. Hoping for the prices to drop a bit more, there are some around 150 in my area already but I'm hoping for it to go lower.

Oh and for this, pretty sure you lose access to those games if you wiped the sellers profile off( or they have Nintendo do it after the sale). If I were you, I'd negotiate the sale to not include those games 'value' if that's what the seller is trying to do.

I dunno, I have a Switch and its all I play and all I care to play at the moment as well. I'm sure if Nintendo had delayed the Switch to December. I'd still be playing Zelda right now and the Wii U more than any other game.

Eh, you could play it for the many other titles and then maybe sell it? But I imagine the value will be way, way down for the WiiU.

If you like character action games, absolutely do it. Bayonetta 2 (+1) and Wonderful 101 represent the best of the genre.
If you like platformers, Wii U excels there as well.
If you don't have a Wii, you could take advantage of Wii U's BC to catch up, also.
Or if you're a massive Zelda fan and want to play Ww and TP HD too.
Otherwise, make a list of all the games you'd consider buying (Pikmin 3 is excellent), and see if that's worth the asking price.

The games are on his account, but his account is tied to the hardware. If his account is removed, those games are gone for everyone and you'll have to get them yourself. If the account stays, the games show up on an account you make and you can play them.
Let's be fair, Mario Kart and Splatoon (2) will be on Switch. Those are some of the greatest games on Wii U. And there are lots of serious hints that Smash might go that route too.
I'm not saying that leaves Wii U without worthwhile exclusives, but if you also count what's available on 3DS (Super Mario Maker), then the biggest and most popular games on Wii U are NOT exclusives period.
Which, again, doesn't mean there aren't incredibly awesome games still exclusive and will stay exclusive. But the REALLY BIG ones... yeah, not sure about that.
