Call of Duty: Ghosts versus Battlefield 4 Screenshot Thread: Serious Grafix

The problem with downsampling. Is that you also need to pair it with some good AA otherwise DS by itself only provides good IQ and poor AA.

4xSGSSAA+2x2 OGSSAA(Downsampling) is a sight to behold.

THis thread has shown me that Ghosts doesn't look as bad as I expected.

we've only seen footage of KZ:SF multiplayer:

(PNG taken from the high bitrate footage)

....? Nah we have seen plenty SP footage which looks much nicer than that. Take a screen from direct footage of BF4 multiplayer as well. It sure doesn't look as good as SP either, even on PC.

It's pretty easy to see why Ghosts looked terrible in Youtube videos. The type of detail it presents is easily destroyed in a low bitrate Youtube video.

Technical issues aside, the game is actually pretty.

It doesn't have the sheer technical prowess of BF4 or Crysis 3, but the art style is fantastic and the game still manages to look great.

Is COD still static with no proper physics? I know this thread is more about screenshots but I love me some physics gifs. I guess the same goes for lighting as well.

People should make no mistake, the next gen console versions will not look as good as the material presented by Dennis and Sethos here. Especially not the 720p Xbone versions.

Right, but I've found the same holds true for PC versions as well. Pulling off image quality like that in game isn't a trivial thing. BF4 in Ultra with FXAA runs at 60 fps on my system. Hitting 200% on the resolution slider plus MSAA using the same settings drops to ~15 fps. This is on a GTX680 so I'm sure more powerful cards could do better but the performance penalty is huge. You can still achieve great image quality but I've never been able to hit image quality THAT good while maintaining a smooth framerate (except in older, less demanding games). Though, really, even most UE3 games start to choke a bit with some of the higher quality AA options.

What's performance like? Better or worse than BF4? I only ask because of those ridiculous requirements they posted a while back.

Currently running BF4 on high at 1080 at 45FPS+ average and wondering how I'd cope here.

True, I prefer 60fps screenshots as well. Most of those heavily downsampled shots of new games are from SLI configurations or include a cinematic framerate. That said, at least 1080p BF4 is not much of a problem on PC with a good card and Ghosts should still look better than the PS4 version that seems to lack proper AA.

If only they would fix their servers :(

Battlefield 4 wins quite easily, it has a better looking lighting and better use of colours, and of course more graphical effects.

Though, those COD multiplayer maps look pretty nice, better than those single player levels. And those space shoot look the best by being the opposite of what the other levels look like, clear IQ, better use of colours and it looks minimalistic. IW should make a scifi shooter.

Oh, absolutely. PC wins out in image quality for sure. I'm simply arguing that the PC screenshot thread and these types of images don't really represent what most people can achieve in realtime.

Honestly, I wind up using FXAA (or some other form of post process AA) for most games these days as it smooths the image nicely enough with no performance penalty. Standard MSAA hurts performance and doesn't take care of transparency, SGSSAA and (especially) SSAA are too demanding, and TXAA (which I love) also hurts performance.

That said, if you prefer to game in front of an LCD monitor the post process solutions are less attractive. The pixel structure and general image characteristics of a plasma display definitely work better for post process solutions.

Worse than BF4 for me on a 7970.

BF4 I get occasional drops to the mid-high 40's with everything maxed and FXAA @1080p.

Ghosts drops to the high 20's with the same settings and doesn't maintain 60 as often as BF4 does. Whether that's a driver/update issue or the final performance of the game I have no idea, but I certainly hope it isn't the latter.

Exactly. This was what i was fearing...... Comparing a compressed MP shot to a supersampled SP shot..... Truely embarrassing.
MP CoD and BF4 look a WHOLE lot less than in SP, in real life settings.

I do think CoD looks better than i expected. Even in the PS4 footage.

They already are. :P

Yeah, Titanfall looks pretty nice and I hope this gen will be to scifi FPS games what last gen was to contemporary FPS games. :P

But I meant more ultra clean looking scifi, kind of like the ship in Space Odyssey 2001. Their art style is more suited for that than more organic looking levels. I think I might like those CoD space shots better than any BF4 shot.

I really wish Dice could make a decent campaign. Their visuals are really best in class, but the campaign wasn't just half bad, it was really really bad. I bet the COD campaign is clearly better (still not good though).

Wow, totally avoiding this if so. That's crazy.

ITT people realise that resolution and image quality are the most important aspects to visual quality of games
4k downsampled screens make anything look glorious, 720p/1080p with post process AA look like garbage

That's actually a very cool looking map, gives me ww2 era shooter vibes, rtcw or the older moh games

the new cawadooty definitely looks better than the old ones did in singleplayer (multiplayer looks a lot worse in the screenshots posted), I didn't expect that (since all the mp footage shown before looked as shit as it ever has)
then again maybe the sp in the other games also looked a lot better , I haven't played single player in a cod since cod 4.

I'd play a game with these graphics in the dennis posts over one with the graphics of most of the bf screenshots here
bf4 is a lot prettier but the game has so much post processing crap and shitty effects muddying the visibility.
I remember how much I hated battlefield 3 after the initial 2 hours of being wowed at the graphics and settling down to actually wanting to enjoy the gameplay, then getting hit over the head with lens flares, bloom , color grading that you couldn't run off and a bunch of other dust and shit flying around.

That was like the whole point of Bad Company and then, for whatever reason, threw it out the window and just copy what COD was doing except even more by the numbers.

Seriously, the SP in BF3 could have been just a bunch of Marines trying to survive out on the Battlefield but no, it had to try to copy what was considered hip in the military Michael Bay thriller scene.

If Battlefronts campaign is mediocre, it's ok because the setting and John Williams' score will elevate it to good/awesome level. I wonder if that will have a scripted CoD campaign or if the campaign is set in the multiplayer maps with some cutscenes between them like in the earlier games.

I'll agree that downsampling is not what you should be expecting when it comes to your IQ while actually playing it (unless the downsampled shot is only downsampled because it's very achievable during gameplay, and not only just to make it pretty), but at the same time direct feed screenshots aren't representative to how the game actually looks like in motion. Some games are even hard to show how pretty they are in screenshots, even with downsampling, like Sleeping Dogs that is just vastly superior when you're playing it.

I mean, this is a direct feed capture from The Last of Us:

The game's IQ actually did bother me, but even then I wouldn't say this pic makes justice to the game running.

All that being said, when you can get 60fps while downsampling the IQ is just so good, playing DmC at 3200x1800 (my TV can't get 60hz at 4K) and 60fps never ceases to blow my mind with how good and sharp everything looks. Gotta love UE3 (and MT Framework).

Sethos diligent work on those screens only point out the disparity between BF4 and CoD Ghosts.

Nice crisp looking screens but it lacks a lot compared to BF4. Especially when it comes to lighting. Textures look worse in CoD. Why haven't we had some screens of those maps in BF4 with all that rain? Some good maps in BF4 MP.

The space shots from Ghost look amazing. I'm always a sucker when that setting is used in a game. Picking up the Wii U version but might possible double dip on the PC version if I can find it on sale in the coming months.

OTOH, apply said 720p image to desktop background and the badness maintains, motion or otherwise. TLoU had top-tier lighting and characters (Joel/Ellie) but everything else was of a standard level. Obviously the approach to lighting and characters above all else fit their vision, but parts of that game are horrible in motion or otherwise.

Damn that is a grisly reminder. I loved TLOU like everyone else, don't get me wrong, but it would have been pretty sick if it was a PS4 launch title instead, they could have really done a bit more justice to all that visual potential.
