Call of Duty is essentially dead on PC right now

Probably because Bungie doesn't have the capacity to port the game. It has already been delayed once and the Beta is arriving very late.

If anything is very obvious with the development of Destiny, they are far from resource constrained.

They could have easily accounted for the personal and financial requirements for a PC version a long time ago, but didn't.

25% isnt what a call a deep discount.
Plus those games are reamly expensive.

lol yeah.

Why I haven't bought a Call of Duty game in years. I've never really been that interested in the multiplayer aspect of the game and the 5 hours of gameplay every CoD seems to be these days never seemed worth the money to me. So I decided if they drop down to £5 (like quite a lot of games do on sale) I'll give them a try. The funny thing is, they never have.

Looking at the sale here, they won't even sell the original CoD at less than £11. lol

They can fuck right off with that kind of greed. I guess I will never play a CoD game again,

No on all counts.

Arma 3 listing is not DayZ, the original mod was eventually ported to the game.

Counter-Strike: GO
Garry's Mod
DayZ
Counter-Strike
Arma 3
Rust
Counter-Strike: Source
L4D2
Arma 2
Payday 2
Red Orchestra 2

Are all shooters that are ahead of Ghosts on the concurrent list and are all available for purchase currently in the store.

Outside of Arma 3, most of those games have had super deep discounts and are just cheaper than a CoD (of BF) game.

Most of them went below 5$ or even free (Red Orchestra 2) so the comparaison is hardly fair.

Has CoD decreased on PC? Yes, thanks to the MW2 debacle which more or less slowly killed the game on PC.

I should also say, I would pay more for a CoD game than £5, it depends on how recent the game is. If the game is fairly recent however, it is either not on sale, or the discount is so small, it's still not worth it.

The statement was all of the games above Ghosts are F2P, that is blatantly false and those games were in reference to that statement.

There are a plethora of non-F2P games before any Call of Duty game on the Steam concurrent list. Rust, DayZ, and Arma 3 have never been below $20. (Arma 3 may have been slightly below that amount). I also find the 'games are so cheap' argument to be a weak baseline. Those games still have a barrier to entry in terms of cost, that means a great deal.

Half is a pretty huge exaggeration, dude.

It's actually not. The only times I've ever looked at the cross-platform stats have always had PC with a half to two-thirds the amount of players of the PS4 version. Given the replies on the previous page it's plain to see that isn't quite the case, but the gap is certainly smaller than I expected it to be (though there is good reason for that).

The problem:

-No mod support
-Shitty PC options (like FOV)
-lack of dedi servers for a couple games.
-little support.

This is Activision in a nutshell. Release a game people will love, with the support and options that they want, and you'll keep a following.

This is what a proper COD should look like. This is Call of Duty 4 right now, and this is just the first page:

But Ghost is basically dead..

But that 5k is basically limited to a couple of playlists. And with servers you really can't search (that I know of). So this basically makes most playlists either empty and useless, or with only 1 or 2 matches at the most.

Good post. They haven't done much to court the PC audience.

Dark Souls II is a great example of the point Legacy made.

Despite launching over a month after the console version, the game still managed to pull massive sales numbers and around 80,000 peak concurrent players.

This can be partially attributed to the quality of the PC port. Outside of a few oversights, it was a tremendous job and the community has really taken to the game.

Contrast that to the horrible word of mouth the first game had leading up to the release.

PC gamers have good taste and horrible games are generally abandoned rather quickly. I remember when Battlefield Vietnam came out, it was released along with Unreal Tournament 2003?! BF Vietnam died a quick death since the game had major performance issues & balance issues. Also, UT2k3 was really really good. Dice Toronto even tried to release a free BF1942 Pacific map remake and even that bombed. That game was a complete failure and Dice Toronto was shut down soon after.

If you look at servers stats today, BF Vietnam is pretty much dead, but a lot of people are still playing BF1942. These CoD games all look the same, the PC guys probably got tired of them and moved on. They don't have staying power just like Crysis multiplayer, shit gets boring too fast and minimal skill is involved

BF 1942 server stats

edit: before anyone says lol BF1942 is free on origin. I installed BF Vietnam a few years ago and it was pretty much dead. A handful of servers, the best one running knife only rounds...lol

Not when 75% of them are 5$ or less 10 times a year. It makes the barrier of entry extremely small.

Also most (if not all) of those games are PC exclusive. The CoD scene is now on consoles, if you want to play with your friends, that's where you have to go (unfortunately)

most of the mw2 crowd plays on four delta one servers.

ghosts is horribly optimized even on my 7990 it stutters at max settings I have to turn most of the settings down to get it in playable range. the game even still has crashing issues on a few friends who are using 400 series nvidia cards. and its pretty much just campers paradise with how that game plays with a low ttk compared to blops 2. most people wont download 32GBs just for a weekend.

black ops 2 on pc is a better game at the moment but the playerbase has left. during feburary most of the community left after a netcode patch that made it worse. and then around july another huge drop off of the playerbase left.

even cod4 is still played more to this day on dedicated servers.

mw3 community died due to excessive hacking.

I've bought all the cods on pc since cod4 except black ops 1 and Waw.

and I am interested in getting AW for pc even so.

Is four Delta one still alive? I thought they were shut down by Activision.

Yeah, I'm actually pretty surprised at the low numbers Ghosts is having for its free weekend. It's like no one gives a damn.

Wow, didn't know that many people were still playing CoD 4. Almost makes me tempted to buy it.

Also, in other news speaking of FPS games on PC, people have started playing Battlefront 2 again because of the Star Wars sale, so if you want to play multiplayer again now's your chance.

Broken, lazy ports aren't played. Who would've thought?

Add the map packs being $15+ and you have a recipe for disaster. PC gamers don't put up with what most console players do. They'd rather spend $100 on a mount or a knife skin :lol

Since IW removed dedicated servers in MW2 their CODs have been declining in popularity (locked fov and other crap). Treyarch's PC ports at least tried to cater to the audience a bit.

I remember a few certain wise someones saying "IWNET will revolutionize multiplayer on PC because dedicated servers are outdated infrastructure"

These certain wise someones are currently raving about how the cloud in Titanfall is the best thing ever because aside from AI calcs etc everything is 'so much more responsive with a dedicated back end'.

Hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I don't think activision gives a shit about pc

Jesus really?

Yea the game has bad maps and bunch of other problems. Now I miss Battlefield Vietnam...the game is dead, but man it had a lot of cool and unique maps. Those nightfall jungle maps were so fucking rad. Getting to top of hill and sniping guys left and right was so satisfactory

Explosives like the bouncing betty''s and time bombs were really rad as well. It ran like shit on my rig, but I loved playing it -_-

I would argue the opposite.

They release the majority of their games on their platform, and use Steamworks. Activision doesn't invest as much in the quality of their PC ports at times, but they are still pretty solid (Ghosts being the worst example it would seem).

The only viable explanation for Destiny's console exclusivity is a possible marketing contract with the console manufacturers.

The older CoD's are way too expensive, why bother with those at such prices?

Tomorrow's CoD sale has to be really, really good. The highest discount I think I have ever seen on these games is 33% off, and it's simply not good enough considering that they are mere ports. 50% off at least for all games is a must if they expect to get any worthy numbers. But this is Activision, so it will never happen. Just watch, it will be another 33% off sale for all CoD's, and that's it.

Yep, CoD 4 is the last proper PC CoD (WaW too?). I sometimes like to play it again, and brings a smile to my face that there is such a big community still playing for a 6 year old game.

I recommend it if the sale tomorrow is good enough. Really, CoD 4 is very good.

And I wanted to try Ghosts MP just to see if it is as bad as people say it is, but there is no way I'm downloading 25GB for just a weekend.

Yep, I remember that too. Hilarious.

Its not that COD is dead on PC but rather that GHOSTS is just a really bland FPS. I think that with the changes made in the upcoming title, COD will have a much larger base again on PC

CoD's day has to come sooner or later. We've rarely seen a franchise maintain such popularity across generations. I know some are looking to Titanfall to take the crown, but I think CoD's realism is part of the massive appeal. We shall see...

I think the casual focus to the mechanics and low skill ceiling give it the mainstream appeal.

I would also say that Black Ops 1 is a decent PC version as well on par with COD4.

wow, kevin spacey! the literal embodiment oh what every man wants to be. some of you might be thinking "oh, this is just more of the same" and that's where you'd be wrong sir. this is more of the same + kevin spacey!

sign me up for a day 1 purchase. or at least a day 30 purchase when the game can be had for $15 from your local game retailer or (more likely) $0.00 from the dumpster behind said retailer. I mean, kevin spacey! he's such a dreamboat <3

Black Ops 1 and 2 are better PC version that MW3 and Ghosts never will be. I have zero faith in sledgehammer (look at the MP section made by them in MW3).
Yeah Im not even pre-ordering, until reviews and GAF feedback comes for Advanced Warfare. No more money for Activision from me. Ghosts was the last straw.

Same here and i think it will not sell well on Steam. It will have players yes but i don't think it will be bigger then Black Ops 1 or 2. Ghosts is abomination it should have never been made at all. One of the worst shooters i played in a longtime.

Black Ops 1 PC is shit unless you have an intel i processor (you think Ghosts runs like shit ? Try BLOPS).

Don't get me started on the flood of Crouch Only NukeTown 24/7 Tactical Shit Pit servers.

World at War has that same problem with Crouch servers. They are flooded with them, I don't know how people can play that.

And yeah, BLOPS doesn't really have a big community. I got banned from like the only good server here in the Southwest USA so I can't even play it anymore.

COD 4 is like the only good community left.

I got Ghosts for free. Literally. Our local futureshop were taking ANY game from last gen for an exchange of your choice of Assassins creed4,Battlefield 4(either Ps4,Ps3,360, Xbone) or Ghosts..obviously when I got there all the good games were gone.

I remember a time when people posted that CoD boycott Steam group screencap (of some members playing the game) as if it meant something. Looking back now, at that point the decline started and it hasn't stopped.

I think being spread out over a lot of games and poor PC options are the likely answers. Not surprised the thread has some of the inevitable smug "PC players are too smart to play what I think is trash, unlike console gamers" rhetoric.
