Call of Duty: World At War Beta In October

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones who migrated accounts and got the VIP badge :D

So they're starting the code sending tomorrow? Is it gonna be US only for a while or is Yuropland getting in on the fun too?

A French and Spanish site already have taken emails from many asking for code, and will send them out tomorrow or Tuesday. Eurogamer will do the same.

That’s almost 50k codes going out very soon

Hm? We all started getting codes yesterday. I'm in Sweden and got mine already. I'm not a VIP on the CoD-site or anything, in fact I just registered an account for the first time yesterday, but I preordered from a Swedish game store so maybe that gives me the same status as a VIP? I don't know really, I don't have the badge.

After playing two rounds of TDM... the dogs are putting me right off. I hate them. But I suppose when I killed the guy who had set them off and stood there emptying my clip into him after he was dead, it was fun :lol. If they dogs hit you from behind, you either have to be insanely quick or be lucky enough to have a team mate next to you, or you're dead. Two hits from them and you're down. So if there's two dogs, you won't really have a chance to react. They only take one or two shots to put down, but if they come up behind you, I rarely had the chance to spin round before I was taken down by something. But I suck at this, so... people who played more CoD4 than me might be more effective at it.

Played Castle and Roundhouse... I liked Castle, mainly because it looked quite nice and it was easy to learn. Roundhouse was a bit too big for 12 players, yet too small for the tanks it has and it's a pretty drab map.

Sound effects and the graphics overall are good... as a primarily single-player gamer, this has boosted my hopes for a decent SP campaign though.

At least you actually have a chance to stop the dogs, and I dare say if you're any good a mighty good chance. The helicopter sucks ASS, it will target the top player/s over and over and you can't do jack about it unless you want to waste a portion of the game hiding indoors somewhere (even then it sometimes gets you).

what sucks is, I must have released the dogs at least 15-20 times and I only scored like 7 kills total! On a big map they are just running everywhere and finding no body. The key is to follow the dogs and shoot the bastards trying to kill the dogs..BTW, you get 3 points for killing a dog.

Here are my impressions after playing it for a few hours and reaching the level cap.

Make no bones about it, this is CoD4 with a WW2 skin with minor tweaks and additions. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but at the same time it's a bit disappointing.

Player models are pretty much identical all the way to the death animations. They added some gore to the game which is neat addition. The animation from throwing the grenades look very artificial and stiff compared to what we saw in CoD4. A little disappointing for me personally.

The Barracks are essentially the same as they were in CoD4 with the additions of Vehicle perks. Still have the 5 custom slots (why only 5? wtf?) along with the 5 presets. All are similar to the ones in CoD 4. ie Assault, Sub machine, Demonlion, Sniper, Light Machine Guns.

Challenges are for the most part identical such as 3 levels for each gun for kills and headshots. Challenges for doing other stuff such as throwing back grenades etc.

In terms of Maps, Makin (swamp/grassy/night area), Roundhouse (large scale, isometric), Castle (think Chinatown map) give a good array of different map types.

Makin is an okay map. I definitely need to spend more time with it to get accustomed to it. I found Makin to be a very difficult map to play at first because it introduces night time gameplay and water areas.

In the water areas you are obviously slower than on solid ground and you cannot go prone, only kneeling down. It being dark also obviously makes it hard to see people especially in my case where my TV is relatively small. There are also a lot of houses and areas underneath those houses so it's going to be a camp fest at the beginning.

Roundhouse is a very large map with a lot of towers. There are a few sweet spots I found in my time playing which should make snipers very happy. This map is at heart designed really for HUGE team battles and isn't really suited for typical 6 vs 6 TDM. It's probably Treyarch's answer for the complaints in Ground War from CoD4 where the maps were too small to handle large battles.

Castle reminds me a lot of Chinatown in CoD4 in that you have very large structures with a lot of towers on top of it. I feel bad for which ever team ends up being on a lower end of the map cause the opposing side, with the right perks, can easily get to the top of the map and snipe like nobodys business.

Like I said before, the maps in the beta provides a lot of variety but are hampered by problems with the CoD4 engine. The one big problem I kept running into was the poor spawning system. Far too often I will either spawn right near an enemy or spawn in the middle of a gun fight. Sure, it's great when it works when you're on the winning side, but it sure sucks when you are on the opposing side.

The voice acting in the game is plain annoying. CoD 4 sounded natural while CoD:WaW sounds like they got some random person and got them to impersonate the nationality with a bit of stereotyping. It's cool to hear Jack Bauer the first time, but man it gets borderline insane having to hear him scream at you time and time again.

As for the guns themselves, there are some seriously balance issues. The bolt action rifles for some odd reason require two shots to take somebody down, but if equipped with a scope, only takes one shot to take somebody down. The first SMG you are given is pretty damn good. It's on par with the MP5. The first LMG, beyond its retarded design, is really solid. I would even say it's almost feels like a SMG for the fact that I didn't feel slow running around and the time it took to aim was a lot less than what we had to deal with in CoD4. Snipers, I have no had the chance to play with but nothing looks to be wrong with them so far.

The only thing that really bothered me about the demo was the inclusion of vehicles. Fuck them. It's bad enough that they have quite a bit of energy to take down, it's worse in that when the player leaves the vehicle, it's instant. I just find the inclusion of vehicles ruin the flow of the battle.

Other than that, I do hope that this is truly a real beta cause there are issues that need to be addressed. CoD:WaW is a solid game though will take some getting use to especially coming from CoD4.

Yeah, I fucking HATE the Japanese voices, it sounds like a retardedly stereotypical B-movie from the 80s or something :/

Yep, the 'Japanese' voices are terrible. Hell, they're all terrible.

Just put another hour into it and only got killed by them once, as opposed to half a dozen deaths the first time.

Finally got to play Makin. It's a pretty cool map, lots of ways to get around it so you never feel trapped. I'm actually starting to really enjoy the game, but then I remember there's no chance of me even being able to afford the full game for ages so I don't want to play it too much incase I get hooked.

Castle is still my favourite map so far.

From whatever I can play before the game locks up, I enjoy it a lot more over CoD4. The guns feel good, the vehicles are a nice addition but not overwhelming.

Finally got my preorder beta code. Game is awesome. The sniper rifles feel so much better than COD4, and the maps so far seem a lot more wide open and not as generic/similar as they do in 4. They also look a lot different, while the COD4 maps all look washed out and hazy.

My only problem thus far is hit detection, it seems a bit off. Shotgun is still brutal as all hell. Dogs = YES. Unleashed some a few minutes ago. Nothing is better than rolling up on a group of enemies as they are frantically trying to shoot 2-3 dogs chasing them while you unload on them.

There is a lot more vibrant green and blues in some of the maps. There is also a night map which makes use of the lighting and looks good to boot. I remember I asked myself why did CoD4 have night vision when it had no maps to make use of it.

Times like this i regret having over 10 passwords, I just cant remember my Charlieoscardelta account for the life of me. Can no longer recover the password for it either even though i know the account name. Heres hoping gamekult or whatever sends out keys soon.

Can we please stop turning this thread into a code-begging thread? Use it for impressions and set up another for code begging.

i thought cod4's color palette was varied from that beta too - crash with its blues and yellows, vacant with the dark interiors and bright outsides, and overgrown's greens, but then the maps in the rest of the mp were really plain and colorless.

cross my fingers that the other maps are like the ones in this beta. i can't stand cod4's lack of color

Ok, I'm downloading the beta right now, but the download speed is quite dissapointing. COD4 beta downloaded very fast.

Has anybody else experienced slow download speed with this beta?

Played a few more games this morning and here's a few more impressions...

- The change to World War II and the change in setting isn't a bad thing for the atmosphere of the maps.

- The maps themselves however aren't designed as well as Infinity Ward's maps in CoD4. The settings are pretty cool, but as far as being strategically designed for one team vs another, Infinity Ward's maps win. Based on these three maps anyway.

- The change to WW2 does change the dynamics of the weapons. Big time. Personally I favor modern weapons but it's just a preference thing.

- They added vehicles to multiplayer? Color me unimpressed.

- The dogs are pretty hilarious:lol

The gameplay is really good so far. The maps are better, there is more variety and elevation so if you're being chased you can lose someone in ditch. I see lack of spawn camping, I'm not sure if I was lucky one or it was designed like that. , such as a lot of the powerful rifles have no recoil of what so ever. One new small addition that I liked is a squad member, you can join or make your own squad and your squadmates will be colored blue. The vehicles aren't bad, in one of the maps the tanks are at an extreme disadvantage so if you use them you're taking a big risk but its worth it if you have infantry supporting you.

Anything else specific people want to know?

Yeah, I like the tank, but it just seems so cumbersome and a pain to use. Not to mention it takes forever to reload. Hopefully, they balance it out a little better.

I think the time ot reload is fine, you can have it faster cuz then people will spam it.

They need to up the recoil on semi-automatics. They seem like the new "M16" when grouped with Stopping Power.

Indeed. The M40 just screams "Spray and Pray".

edit: oh wait, the semis. I think they're fine, the automatics are worse.

Quick correction to what I said earlier, there are actually 10 custom slots. You unlock the last 5 by doing the prestieges.

Tanks still suck ass. It's almost like playing Halo.

With these perks, concept of balance is thrown out the window for some of these guns. The MP40 base damage is more powerful than the Thompson M1 which is odd but with Stopping Power. The semi-automatics like G43 and SVT have no recoil at all and you put a round in the same spot with dead on accuracy.

On the other hand, the variety of grenades are pretty good. They're more of an area denial weapon which improves their use.

Totally disappointed by this game. Guys don't even be excited for getting a code. I was one of the guys that constantly said "They will do a good job", but at least the MP job is just plain bad.

It's COD4, slower paced, with maps that were designed by someone with no mind at all. They are all just simply a mess, at least the 3 in the beta. The only good weapon I find, for my tastes, is the BAR. And no, I am not a COD noob, hell I am Prestige 6th or 7th in COD4. Really disappointed by this game. I am gonna keep giving it tries, but it looks like my purchase will be canceled.

Graphics are better, FPS is smoother, but atrocious maps and some balance issues break the experience.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the new maps.

Did you ever play any of the other CoD's?

First off I just want to say this is COD4 with a new skin which isn't a bad thing, because I love the WW2 setting.

it takes time to get used to the guns, they seem weird but fun, I love the guns, they sound right, and they feel right, very satisfying. the sniper (rifle) however is not as cheap as COD4 snipers, it will take some skill to get some kills with it. nothing beats lining up somebody in the head while proning in the bushes.

the maps are great but not well developed, there are sometimes too much shit around and will have to jump over everything, especially in the Castle level, becomes very frustrating when trying to escape from gunfire, other than that they are great.

The graphics have improved a bit, the best part about this is the variety of levels and the art, night jungle level is amazing to play in, the castle is weird but fun , and the city one is fantastic with the tanks, very hectic and feels like a single player game sometimes, when everybody charges to the middle.

the tanks are not very hard to take down, it just takes some group effort, not alot of people even bother with them because the RPG is very easy to use and accurate this time around.

Also is it just me or is this a very artistic call of duty game? I know it's only the MPbeta but it's very atmosopheric and the loading screen looked like it was pulled from Gears2 art.

BTW, eveybody should use the RPG perk and take it out everytime you hear the dogs, it's very funny when you just blast 2 or 3 at a time.

I will pick this up when $30, hopefully on Boxing Day.

I disagree as well, I found the maps of COD4 to be the most retarted and useless maps ever in an FPS, they were like made by a 10 year old.

"okey for this level we create a ship and each team attacks from one end to another, and let them charge in the middle and spam grenades, should be fun."
