Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

I'm really not sure about this game. The maps are absolutely terrible. I feel like they were trying to 100% cater to esports when making them and just ended up with everyone being unsatisfied. The only one I sort of like is Ardennes. Plus, just from videos, Flak Tower looks just as bad and claustrophobic too. Does anyone know if the maps for war will count for the ~13 maps on release? I like war, but I also want to play domination and TDM. So if there are around 3 war maps, that means I automatically hate like half the regular maps in this game...

I also really dont the divisions. It just feels like they completely took out a ton of the customization for no reason.

IDK, I love traditional COD, but I'm really thinking about canceling my preorder at this point...

Also how on earth do you use the bazooka to take down UAVs? I always hit to high or to low

Just track its path for a couple seconds and aim about a UAV length in front if it's close to you and about 2 UAVs in front if it's far away. It has a big hitbox and you get used to it after a couple of tries. I'm usually able to take them down as soon as they come in now. They really need to make them faster and higher up.

First impressions after a couple of rounds on war(?) mode- there's a good game here. But its buried under terrible net code, lag, poor maps, and still people have the ability to dolphin dive and quick scope (it seems not matter the era those will never go away). I'm not completely put off, as there's a lot of polish that could be added, but its not instant buy for me like BF1 was. It feels like if e-sports wasn't a thing with COD it would have evolved a lot more quickly. Anyway the new objective modes are welcome.

Apparently these are the smallest maps in the game? Is that supposedly true?

Have they come out and said anything about the lag yet? When you have host advantage, great but that's few and far between. It's unplayable the rest of the time and I refuse to run around as fodder for unkillable enemies.

I was loving this beta to start with but unless they do something abou the net code it's refund time.

For some reason, I find myself hate-playing this tonight. It's really bad. Like I'm kind of in disbelief this is the highest selling game every year. The lag is awful, the mechanics barely exist beyond idiotic shit like dropshotting or quick scoping, the maps are uninspiring, etc.

Just everything about it is somewhere between dreck and shit. How do you put three years of dev time into a game and have this come out?

Played again. Close to ten games. Did well, top or second to top on my team. Didn't even use SMGs or Assault Rifles. Didn't feel like I was having fun though.

I think this is an easy pass for me, which is just fine. Hopefully Infinite Warfare gets some nice post-cycle content like Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3 did.

In my first match I've played I have heard more homophobic slurs and racism than anything else I've played all year combined. Never grow up cod fans. The gameplay itself is the usual, silenced smg is way too good.

I personally feel Sledgehammer's idea of not making people feel left out backfired on them.

IMO they should have just kept it as previous COD WW2 shooters were (you know, as history has it) and we would not be hearing these racist slurs, ect (at least not to the extent they are coming at us).

They will never use dedicated servers. The game will always broken on a base level using p2p.

I don't think anyone expected this game to have true dedicated servers.

You cant really fix maps.

Same 3 lane maps that have been in CoD for years. Every installment people on gaf say the same thing about maps being bad, lol. I personally never really judge maps from a couple days of play. Tons of maps i don't like until i get used to them. This CoD feels no different than any other cod games outside of a few things that can be fixed by launch. I actually really like this one primarily due to the fact that divisions force everyone to not run the exact same cookie cutter loadout. With proper weapon balancing this game could really shine, imo. I honestly don't get all the hate.Every year it's like you guys believe a game that sells more than anything else is going to change after a decade of success.

Bad games tonight. No matter what I could not get a kill. Even if I did it would be get a kill, die and repeat. It's time real dedicated servers and not this hybrid crap. Also what's with all the halo jumping?

Played about an hour, plus war

I like the guns, sprint, sounds and the style of the game and I like how they are handling the division ( even though I enjoy cod multiplayer, for this I'm excited for zombies and campaign)

CDs obviously always had small map design, but these maps feel especially claustrophobic at the moment. Usually they break up even close maps with long range sections or wide open spaces, but here everything feels way to room to room an even the 'open' roads and walkways feel smaller then the buildings. Also the 2 maps I played feel way to A symmetrical for my liking

Plus the auto assist is really not doing it's job. War seems like a great idea but that bridge push seems like a nightmare for the builders with how fast the kill time is.

Also is this all there will for killstreaks and weapons ? Weapons don't bother me but I'm a bit tired of this philosophy of 'we need to make killstreaks more fair so let's make them boring'

As i said, i think Sledgehammer's idea of minimizing this kind of talk actually increased it. Sad but true.

Sledgehammer, without realizing it gave these racist/male shovanist trolls the bait to start talking this way in an ever esculating manner. It's just gonna get worse once the game is released and hits main-stream.

I don't think their intent was to ever minimize any kind of talk. Racist and sexist idiots will still find something to complain about if they could.

The complaints about Nazi symbols not being in the game are so fucking shameful. Very few if any WWII games have shown Nazi imagery. They always default to the iron cross to depict the German army.

Playing as Expeditionary and the level 2 reward is getting to equip a tactical and lethal grenade but I'm not able to. What am I missing?

I think the guy you're quoting was referring to the in-game soldier?

God damn, so glad this beta existed. Sledgehammer has officially cemented themselves as the worst CoD developer next to Infinity Ward.....::how can we go back to boots on ground and have absolutely the worst system for classes, worst map designs I have ever seen and the menu oh my lord the menu.

Guess I'll continue sticking with black ops 3.......

Next year is treyarch and thank god it is

Latest update from Michael Condrey on upcoming changes coming to the beta & for launch: (main takeaways being an adjustment to sprint-out times & new button layouts including Bumper Jumper. Former is confirmed for today)

Welcome to the official opening day of Weekend 2 of the Call of Duty: WWII Private MP Beta. We're back, everyone! It's great to be online as we all race to level 30 and the new unlocks this weekend in the Beta. We opened Weekend 2 with a new level, Aachen, and five more player ranks that brought the M1A1 Carbine, Mortar Strike, Tabun Gas and more.

Many of you noticed that we had taken Ardennes out of rotation yesterday while we introduced the new map, Aachen. Rest assured it's now back in rotation for the rest of this weekend. It's great to see Ardennes get such a show of support, thank you. And we know it's early still for everyone experiencing Aachen, so we look forward to more of your feedback. Our map design philosophy for CODWWII was built around the goal of truly encouraging different playstyles based on map and mode rotation. Pointe du Hoc is great for Infantry and Airborne, but the trenches are where Expeditionary Forces wreak havoc. We see a lot of people enjoying the raw power of the shotgun trench warfare tactics in this map. Likewise, Aachen is great for ARs and SMGs, but the longer sightlines and open lanes encourage the Mountain and Armored Division to deliver death from distance. It is important to us that throughout the maps coming at launch, players will experience iconic battle locations and face a variety of layouts to master. Flak Tower, which we showed at the Gamescom Competitive Exhibition is also very different from the Gustav Cannon, which we showed in the MP Reveal Trailer. So, get some time in on all five of the iconic Divisions in the MP Beta this weekend, you'll want to have each ready to join the fight in November.

We've made some changes based on Weekend 1 feedback as well. TDM match limit is now at 100. Kills on Domination are also now 100 points. We also reduced Molotov's to one per score streak, and raised the difficulty of the paratroopers. We're monitoring game data and community feedback on these, to help inform our decision for the final game. In addition, we've adjusted the ADS out of sprint and those changes will roll into the MP Beta on Saturday.

We also heard you on several other issues. We've addressed Hitmarker feedback for November, and we're considering flinch adjustments as well. We think you'll also appreciate that, in response to your feedback, we plan to add the following controller layouts for ship:

¥ Bumper Jumper
¥ Bumper Jumper Tactical
¥ Stick and Move
¥ Charlie
¥ One-Hand Gunslinger
¥ Scout
¥ N0M4D L3F7Y
¥ Brawler
¥ Beast

Lots more happening behind the scenes, (and plenty from last week captured (https://goo.gl/vFLi5J). We're sure to have more to share throughout the rest of Weekend 2. Thank you so much for all your feedback. Keep it coming! And have fun this weekend!

Good luck on the front lines, and be sure to stay tuned to @SHGames for more news coming soon.

Happy Labor Day Weekend,

-Condrey

First game I played tonight on PS4 and the top player was named "iCookJews"

....I mean, WHAT THE FUCK >=(

I don't think maps problems stem exclusively from being "swiss cheese", there generally is a lot of cover, where people camp from. On pc it's not a huge problem, but on consoles it's hard to see people behind cover and more importantly aim-assist doesn't really kick in as it does when full body is visible.

I'm thinking about going to BO3 myself after skipping IW and most assuredly, skipping this. It's strange though. I always loved boots on the ground rather than flying through the air. I'm already missing the vertical play, but even so.. past CoD's had decent vertical play without jetpacks. Not only that, but I feel I could fit two/three WW2 maps into one WaW map.

Plus you don't have CoD4/MW2 wall penetration to counter headglitches.

The main menu is horrible.

Honestly this is the one part I will reserve for the full release. Since I got the impression that you load into Headquarters from the get-go. It might still be the same in the end when you go to match make but I wonder if it will be different looking once HQ is there.

Why is there partial/half cover at every turn of each map. It punishes you to go push around corners and instead just camp with half your body hidden. Giving players just 1 tactical/nade makes you push even less.

Horrible maps. Just make a BO1 remake for 200$ and ill get it. Wasted so much money on all the cod's since Ghost

Played a few matches last night, tried out the LMGs. Surprised myself and managed to go positive in every match. I'm really liking how everything has been simplified. I see what people are saying about the maps being too small and the spawning could definitely use some work. Shooting down recon planes is awesome though.

You might need to run around with an SMG to be in the top percentage of players but I still had fun playing at a more methodical pace.

Absolutely hate it.
Pretty graphically, but horribly laid out maps and garbage feeling weapons.
Will rent for the campaign, but I hope this is one off. I'm glad double jumping and wall running is gone, but WW2 is such a boring setting for COD multiplayer.
Oh look, another bombed house....

There is also a reddit thread somewhere if you don't bother watching.

It's not using 100% dedicated servers and in my experiences playing in Australia, it's a lucky dip if you get placed on one because right now each lobby is playing completely different to the last. Trying to sell this hybrid system as proven dedicated servers is getting a bit old now.

You don't get host migrations on dedicated servers!

I was playing a lot of online uncharted lost legacy, and when I played this beta, I was trying to play a certain way and paid the price, lol. I even forgot about the melee button at times when I need it.

Many of you noticed that we had taken Ardennes out of rotation yesterday while we introduced the new map, Aachen. Rest assured it’s now back in rotation for the rest of this weekend. It’s great to see Ardennes get such a show of support, thank you. And we know it’s early still for everyone experiencing Aachen, so we look forward to more of your feedback. Our map design philosophy for CODWWII was built around the goal of truly encouraging different playstyles based on map and mode rotation. Likewise, Aachen is great for ARs and SMGs, but the longer sightlines and open lanes encourage the Mountain and Armored Division to deliver death from distance.

This quote is just nonsense, particularly in reference to Pointe du Hoc. This is a map that practically only supports silenced weapons by design. I've had tons of success using the infantry class on the other maps, but you can't get away with it on PdH at all. Every time you show up on the radar you end up being descended on from three different angles at once, and while you can practically cover one of those angles there is a strong chance you end up being shot in the back or side. The trenches may, sort of, support shotgun play on this map but it still suffers from the same problem as every other non-silenced weapon here. You can definitely get some good scores with a shotgun, but between the completely unpredictable and chaotic spawning mechanism, and the radar mechanics, you're very unlikely to get a decent streak going.

Sledgehammer may believe their maps support a variety of different playstyles but I have seen nothing to suggest that any map in this beta (apart from the atrocious War map/mode) doesn't bias either to Airborne or Infantry. You can sort of viably use a shotgun on PdH as you can sort of viably use a sniper on Gibraltar and an LMG on Aachen, but you will be better off with a rifle or an SMG over all practically every time. The silencer is too advantageous and the SMGs too consistently at close range for the shotgun to be hugely useful. The LMGs and sniper rifles suffer enormously from how easy it is to flank and how hard it is to control the lanes on the map. You can't afford to have an LMG or a sniper if you're going to spend as much time guarding your back as looking forward. Three of this game's five weapon types (and two of the game's five divisions) feel like things to play when you want to give yourself extra challenge if you become bored of the pretty homogeneous gameplay offered by the SMGs and automatic rifles.

There is a huge problem with Call of Duty that exists on a very fundamental level and always has when it comes to balance: killstreaks are everything. You might be able to get a good kill death ratio or good kill death spread using a shotgun on PdH, but you are extremely unlikely to be able to put together much of a streak because you can't survive for long periods of time when enemies are in every direction and you're showing up on the radar. The score/killstreak mechanism in this game is one of the series' mainstays but it is something the developers need to look at. There is a Basic Training in this game which sees you swap from a scorestreak reward system to a score reward system. You don't lose points when you die but you can no longer get a reward more than once and you have to get to a significantly higher score to unlock each reward. I think this is great, but because it's a Basic Training you have to choose it instead of something else which is far more beneficial. I would seriously suggest that Sledgehammer remove this as a Basic Training option and instead make it a global option that everyone can choose without sacrificing anything else. If you want to get rewards for streaks, that's fine, but if you want to focus on the objective be it in Team Deathmatch where you should be trying to maximise your kill-death spread or Domination where you should be trying to maximise the number of flags your team hold, you can then do that without having to worry so very much about dying. People often complain that Call of Duty players shun the objective, but practically shunning the objective is built into Call of Duty's very core. Even with the scorestreak concept, priority #1 is not dying and while that is true no-one is going to risk their life to win a game. It's time for change.

Ultimately my interest in Call of Duty is about to end for the year. I'm not going to buy this game despite thinking it's probably the best CoD game this generation. I loved this franchise but I can't get excited for a series which seems only willing to tinker at the edges every year. Screw around with the create a class system, add some new killstreak rewards, build some pretty turgid maps, release, repeat. It's not enough. It's not enough because, like it or not, even Call of Duty 4 was flawed, and somehow every one of Call of Duty 4's flaws is still clear in WWII.

Feels good to me I mean if you wanted boots on the ground COD here it is. New class system is interesting.

I'll be on Destiny 2 this fall but if I was looking for a COD I'd pick it up.

The criticisms are pretty funny, I don't think anyone, even the OG IW guys, could make a COD after a decade of games and make one that please everyone.

After playing the first weekend I managed to get MWR (or rather IW Legacy) at a sale and went on to play that on PS4. And wow. Going from WW2 to MWR there's a gigantic difference in hit detection quality and netcode. And the final game WILL be like it is in the beta, don't kid yourself. This is doomed from a longtime perspective. Sure, it'll sell like crazy, but this game will get a lot of criticism and the fans are completely right to do so.

This weekend vs last weekend is a night and day difference. Damage adjustments along with increased kill points are making the game flow a lot better. Last weekend I would see myself having some pitiful matches where I either break even or go 2-8, and now I'm back up to my 2.0-ish spread (even with airborne on the correct maps.)

Molotov feels borderline useless unless you get a direct hit now though. Managed a double kill with my one bottle earlier this morning. Hitmarkers for days if they just run into the fire.
