Can anyone recommend Blasphemous?

Looking for a good 2D Soulslike. Can anyone recommend this or is it inferior in every way imaginable? I don't trust game reviews and prefer recommendations from my fellow Gaftonians.

It's been on sale for like $6 multiple times. Yes, graphics and art alone are worth that for this game.

If it's on sale, don't hesitate. The gameplay is average, but you're mostly playing it for the art style / setting. I didn't finish the game, but enjoyed what I played. Wasn't blown away, but was fine.

Death's Gambit might also be one you want to have a look at. Haven't played it myself but looks similar and have heard good things about it.

EDIT: It's on sale now as well even.

Felt way overhyped to me, too. Hollow Knight (in spite of its flaws) and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom are much better games if a metroidvania is what you are looking for.

The game is very clunky, and the spike damage sucks. Some of the map design is simply stupid. By stupid I mean, you see a vertical corridor, and then you see a gate blocking your progress down, with a door above the gate and one below it, and you enter the above door, do a bunch of platforming just to get to said door below gate, I haven't seen that in a game so blatant in years.

I honestly can not. And it's not like it's a bad game. The game has a pretty pixel visuals...but the down of this game is the music. The soundtrack is so unspiring and boring...people told me that it was on purpose to give a more climatic "vibe", but it didn't work for me. Also, re-equipping plataform important itens is a mundane action and the map does not help with the backtracking. Also spikes = instant dead, which seems like a lazy way to punish plataforming.

Also I wouldn't consider this game a soul because it doesn't have soul mechanics(stamina for instance).

Death's Gambit might also be one you want to have a look at. Haven't played it myself but looks similar and have heard good things about it.

EDIT: It's on sale now as well even.

Blasphemous end up being a better experience than Death's Gambit. Death's Gambit relies more on cheesy deaths rather than punishing stuff. The feather mechanic is cool though.

Blasphemous is amazing.

Gameplay: brutal but fair, controls great, cool combos
Visuals: amazing, unique artstyle with a never before seen gothic theme
Music: legit one of the best soundtracks ever made

Incredible game for sure, go get it!

It's definitely up there with the best 2d Metroidvanias. They've also fixed some of the platforming since release which made it more fun for me personally. Finished it up a few months ago.

Loved this game, finished it couple of months ago.
Definitely recommend this game.

Also check out Death's Gambit as mentioned here by others. Is even better!

I really like the game and would definitely recommend. The visuals, music and unique Catholic gothic style of the game makes for one of the most memorable gaming experiences. The gameplay is far from perfect though, due to some questionable design choices like some of the item/progression being way too cryptic/vague to figure out by yourself, item progression in itself not making sense sometimes and grandiose bosses that are on the easy side.
Something to be aware of: the game has "difficult" platforming sections. Difficult in the sense of instadeath on fall and designed in a way that is atypical for Metroidvania or "2D Soulslike", but more akin to a pure challenging platformers.
I'm hoping they're able to perfect the formula for it's upcoming sequel.

Only played about 3 hours and loved it. It's on sale pretty regularly too.

Death's Gambit might also be one you want to have a look at. Haven't played it myself but looks similar and have heard good things about it.

If you're seeking a 2D souls game, this would be the one to play. It shares a lot of the same systems. Plus, I think it had a major update recently.

I recommend it. Finished it and I intend to play it again later. The palette evokes a style certain SNES games had and the music is muy bueno, really suits the setting.
Game is brutally unfair in places and really tries a bit too hard to be the Dark Souls of metroivania's. Should take 20h or so to compete if you explore and do basic achievement hunting.

One I don't think I've ever seen mentioned is Dark Devotion. It's lacking some polish and production values, but I liked my time with it. It's not really a metroidvania, but has good exploration, and it's not exactly a rogue like, since there's not much randomization. It's still a similar experience to both though, without being either. Has the most generous dodge roll I've ever found in a game. I've seen Blasphemous described as a 2D dark souls a lot, but I think Dark Devotion is just as much or even more so than blasphemous, since it actually has a dodge roll, stamina, and attacks on the trigger buttons, with a focus on bosses and punishing difficulty. It's not too difficult once you get used to it though and your not a game journalist, the reviews I've read trashed it based on an unfair difficulty.

I recommend both if you want a 2D dark souls. Blasphemous if you want it more a Metroid game and Dark devotion if blasphemous sounds too easy and you want it even closer to its dark souls inspiration and with rogue like elements.

I got it for "free" as part of a Humble Bundle a few years ago, and the short amount of time I spent with it was ok. It's hard to recommend because there's so, so many other Metroidvanias out there now to say nothing of how many others are in the pipeline. Blasphemous doesn't do anything you haven't seen done elsewhere.

I can! I played it on launch and liked it very much. Supposedly it is even better now with the bugs ironed and content added.

I was waiting for Ghost Song so many years now. I hope we get it this year.

Yeah, it's pretty good. Defo got some flaws though, as others have said. Chief among these is the map/level design is really poor, lots of needless backtracking.

I got kind of lost after 15-20 hours or so, couldn't be bothered to scour the map for the path forward so I put it down. Might come back at some point but doubt it.

It's solid, but it's not amazing.

I really loved this game, and I don't often like 2D metroidvanias. I got it for the same reasons as you in wanting a 2D souls-like. The combat is very well done, and the majority of the stages/areas and the bosses were just a joy to play. I absolutely loved the soundtrack as well and thought it went perfectly with the overall tone.

I own it, i figure if I'm ever going to complete a side scroller I'd like it to be an artistic achievement, but when push comes to shove it's a bit gloomy for my tastes, most of the time...

Great game with some dark religious story. It's more metroidvania with souls like elements were Salt & Sanctuary is straight up 2d Souls with metroidvania elements.

Me, I can recommend Blasphemous.

Like some said, the game is brutal, but fair.
Platforming got better after some updates.
The FREE DLC updates added so much to the base game.
Cool looking bosses.
Great Soundtrack.
NG+ has some cool twists to it.
TRUEST ENDNG is basically a 100% run, and it's great.

Some side quests are a bit confusing to complete due to the lack of "explanation" on what to do.
Overall, I think it's a pretty solid game.
Have it on Steam and PS4.

Blasphemous is an awesome game. Beautiful graphics, better than simply "16bit", addictive gameplay, somber story and magnificent music. It may not be the best in class, not reaching the heights of Symphony of the Night or Hollow Knight, but it is very much worth one's time.

I liked the "spanish church aesthetic vibe" i expected more from the background graphics. Good game with some "challenging" spots/plataforming. Wait for a sale if you doubt.

Its not a Soulslike but its close enough for a 2d game. Bloodstained Ritual of the Night.

Blasphemous is excellent. A little stiff maybe, but art and atmosphere are incredible and more than make up for any slight shortcomings in combat. Highly recommend it if you are into that genre.

Hollow Knight is also amazing as others have mentioned.

I didn't finish it because some of the bosses were just too tough for me. The combat variety is pretty low too. If you like souls style trial and error it should be good though. I'd probably recommend checking it out for the amazing art and animations alone.
