Can anyone recommend Blasphemous?

What a coincidence! I am currently playing that game. It was rotting for some reason in my backlog among others. I had time to play this week, so I decided to install a bunch of games and to stick with the first one that would catch my attention. Blasphemous was the third one I tried, rather casually I have to admit. I honestly thought I'd pass to another one pretty quickly. But I didn't put down the controller.
It is absolutely awesome. Pixel art is god-tier. Gamefeel is pretty cool. Atmosphere is creepy as duck (enemies give me some Bayonetta vibes). The lore is pretty verbose and takes you to a very special journey. Voices are on point, unexpectedly good for a 2D pixel art game. OST is the icing on the cake.

Do I recommend it for what you want? I don't know man, I never played any Souls game so I don't know what a soulslike should look like.

I got it on launch and really liked it. Haven't really done much because the game is very difficult and while I enjoy it I just get the feeling that it takes too much of my time and stops me from checking out other games.

2D, very difficult, great art and seems to be inspired by Catholic religion somehow.

It's also pretty cheap so you can't go wrong. Support the devs, they have been amazing at supporting this game.

The game has a pretty pixel visuals...but the down of this game is the music. The soundtrack is so unspiring and boring...

I can understand people not enjoying the game but the music? It's on par with the pixel art and the acoustic guitar is somewhat hypnotizing.

Disagree, but I'm not gonna make a case of it. I feel like it's more of a question of taste, I like to play the game with some good effort on the soundtrack. Fortunatelly it's not at the same level of Chasm, which is pretty bad.

Yeah it's not bad by any means, and it's mostly due to personal preference. I like my 2D Metroidvanias to have butter smooth fast feeling way of motion and Blasphemous feels more rigid. Good game though
True, it's got some clunk going on, but I will also say I only give it around an hour total. I should get stuck back in really

..After I play a bit more Cyberpunk mind you. Damn game got me hooked 🦾

One thing I need to add about Blasphemous Devs. Since the game launched they added 3 free DLC, with new mods, improvements, new game areas, game+ content and new ending. Around new 10 hours of game for free.

Looking for a good 2D Soulslike. Can anyone recommend this or is it inferior in every way imaginable? I don't trust game reviews and prefer recommendations from my fellow Gaftonians.
I played the hell out of it (no pun intended) and finished it. It's an amazing Metroidvania. Except for the story. I had to go online and research the story so I even knew it was going on because the way it's presented is so pretentious and in such a style that it's kind of hard to follow and get into. Even after reading about it online, to clarify what was going on, I was still disinterested. What kept me moving on was the fantastic gameplay and cool areas. I'll be honest, I don't even know what some of the items I had were doing.

It took me a while to figure out some stuff because the game has this style that is just kind of, at least for me, hard to feel. Like, I love the graphics and everything, The gameplay was awesome. The world is awesome. But I'll be honest, I was just checking off boxes on the map rather than actually feeling like I was on some type of adventure even though it was still fun... Simply because I didn't really feel the character or story even though the game bleeds atmosphere

I recommend Blasphemous. Game is beautiful as it is BRUTAL. You like retro? You like Metroidvania games? You enjoy brutal and gory gameplay with tight controls, decent voice acting, haunting music and great combat? This game is up your alley! There are multiple endings too with a sequel on the way next year!

I know this isn't really the proper thread to bump, but it's the newest Blasphemous thread I could find.
First off, this is my first playthrough. If the answer to my question is to simply play through, then try again on NG+ (Or something similar), then I apologize.

I'm trying to get the "Incomplete Scapular" but nothing seems to explain how to do it. I'm clearly missing something.
I beat "Ten Piedad," "Tres Angustias," and "Our Lady of the Charred Visage," but I have no idea how to get to the "Resting Place of the Sister."
Every guide I've looked up already assumes the player can just get into that area, but I can't figure it out.

I can't follow this guide because I lack some type of long-jump ability. But any attempts to look up long-jumps are fruitless.
In other words, how the heck do you get past this room: HERE?

I'm on my phone, so I can't check some stuff out with detail, but if memory serves me right, you need to use the "jump boost" you get when doing a air down attack.

While jumping, hold Down and tap the Attack Button to do a slash (same animation as usual). If you hit any solid object (enemy, lamp, candle, bell), you will get a small boost. This can be done up to 2 times in the same jump, or 3 if you equip the right rosary bead (kinda unsure about the quantity here, it's been a while).

If I'm not mistaken, you're trying to get across a large gap with blue(? fire being shot downwards, right?

EDIT: Upon closer inspection, I see where you got stuck. You need a relic that let's you walk on platforms made out of blood floating in mid air. If I'm not mistaken, you get it at the closed door at the very start of the game, you need the key, which you can buy from Candelaria at one of her shops.

Yeah literally anyone can recommend Blasphemous.

For example, I recommend it based on screenshots. I've never actually played though.

Just got off a session. I'm a big souls fan and the atmosphere is definitely there. However I've been playing hours on hours of Dead Cells and it's way more fun and addicting. Much less like Souls, but it gives me the same enjoyment as a souls game.

But yeah, blasphemous drips with personality in its environments, but it's slow and the hazards remind me of unfair NES games

Almost done with it myself and am only sticking with it so I can see it through to the end, endurance style.

My review on Steam:
Blasphemous is an exercise in frustration through and through. Inconsistent hit detection, absence of any i-frames, long animations that often result in your death, poorly signposted level design, inputs not registering, cryptic quests (you will probably miss half on your first playthrough) and the list goes on and on.

The art is amazing and is probably why this has gotten such a positive reception for the most part. The soundtrack is another highlight and, combined with the visuals, establishes a very strong "Soulslike" atmosphere. Other than that, despite the strong start, it very much overstays its welcome. Play GRIME instead.

I can absolutely recommend Blasphemous. Done three playthroughs including the free DLC. It's the best Metroidvania/2D Souls-like, dripping with atmosphere and iconic imagery. The lore is well written and intriguing, and kinda fucked up and disturbing, which is probably why I love it so much. Very cool art design, super cool bosses, challenging but not overly difficult, obtuse but still accessible, at least in terms of mechanics and overall gameplay. You probably gonna miss out some items and side quests if going blind, but check the wiki if you get lost. The music is worth mentioning too. It kicks ass and adds a lot of depth and mystique to the adventure. Fucking love this game and look forward to the sequel.

I gave it a serious shot, but it didn't land with me. The music and gameplay were underwhelming imo. Would rather just play Hollow Knight or any of the Soulsborne games again.

Today I deleted the game after having played it for 13 hours (≈50%). The game is devastating as hell, I don't want to waste my life on its absurd difficulty any more.

Don't recommend it.

In jest, if you don't like it there's no point in self-flagellation

You have to play it in Spanish. The voice actors are among the best in the country, they assembled a dream team. The lore and imagery is an evil twist to the Holy Week festivities in Spain.

Yeah it's a great game. Controls are a bit jank but I think it's made to give more sense of weight.

Finished it, loved it, but, i do get what you're saying broski, it CAN get pretty difficult at times ;)
Apparently, i'm sick in the head and i actually enjoy these masocore games for the challenge they provide but, not everyone is the same and i fully understand why someone would say "fuck this"...
Talking about 2D masocore Metroidvanias, Moonscars was actually some of the most frustrating shit ever, never-ever give it a try if you don't have any patience with these kind of games...

Back to blasphemous : i haven't played the 2nd one yet and i've read that it's better compared to the 1st, gonna finish up PoP the lost crown and then i'll dive into it

Thanks for reminding me of my previous post lol. I actually rescind my initial statement towards the game.

After seeing that they're doing Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound (which looks insane), I've decided to go back and give Blasphemous another go. Haven't gotten deep yet because I need to finish other games, but I plan on doing a complete run this time around to see the chops they'll be bringing to the new 2D Ninja Gaiden.

I hear that the tone and art of Blasphemous 2 isn't as strong, but that it's still very good gameplay-wise and overall. I'll get around to it eventually.

1st game gave me some challenge but it wasn't all that much. Bought the 2nd game and only played a couple hours of it, but it seems a little sloppy, I'm going to have to give it another shot.

Its good but nothing special besides the art direction I found, recently Nine Sols & Prince of Persia in the same genre were much better imho.

Havent played 2 though, so maybe they improved

The Spanish voice-over is incredible (the studio is from Spain). The game is very creepy. If you follow Christianity, even if you don't believe in it, you can appreciate a lot of the lore, visual cues and twisted art. The game is very gory and violent. The 2D helps stomach it.

The first game has a lot of value and gets quite cheap. They released a handful of updates, including crossover and a properly sized expansion/epilogue.

If you love anything from Super Metroid to SotN to Hollow Knight, then there's 66.6% chance you will love Blasphemous.

Blasphemous is all about the aesthetic. If you're into an over the top parody of medieval Catholicism you'll love it. Otherwise it's a fine game but not spectacular

It's very hard but it's one of the best games I've played in recent years. It's only "Soulslike" in the sense that you die and have to make it back to where you died. Other than that, it's pure Metroidvania. The art style and gameplay is fantastic but the game is super obtuse and you pretty much need a walkthough if you want to get everything. Blaphemous 2 is way more straight forward and easy but I highly recommend that one as well.

I'm a pretty big fan of Blasphemous and the sequel feels like an unnecessary retread of the first with new mechanics that felt added just to add stuff. I beat it and all and it's not a bad game by any means but feels like a less inspired "more of the same" type of sequel to me.

Most of the levels essentially look the same with only very slight alterations of the same themes, the added weapons and traversal mechanics are a lateral move to me and don't add anything particularly fun and I really don't like the shitty cartoon-y cutscenes. It's a small difference but the first one feels...nastier in tone.

Blasphemous is somewhat simple but I really love that about it. It took them a few patches to really make it work well but it reminds me of the simplicity of Classicvanias with a killer art style and OST.

The game is hard as hell. Some bosses can lose only after 50 or 100 of your unsuccessful attempts, and only, if you have upgraded the character more than 120%!

I can recommend the game only to masochists and NeoGafers!

Just speaking for myself, couldnt get into it. Played for a couple of hours and it wasnt clicking with me at all. Great visuals, cool premise for sure.

Usually love Metroidvanias but this wasn't it for me. I like some Souls games but they aren't top of my list of favorite styles. If you are into them you may have more joy with Blasphemous than I did

I finished my first run of Blasphemous 1 a few weeks ago.

I was wrong about this game after my first impressions. I think I tried it too soon after Hollow Knight initially and was kind of burnt out on the genre that it didn't stick, but I'm glad I gave it another go years later.

Blasphemous 1 is a masterpiece. I went at it without any guides so I got the bad ending, but at the very least the bad ending also gives you imo the coolest skin color lol. I'm looking forward to NG+ eventually to fight the rest of the dlc bosses. Isidora is such an awesome flight.
