Can we talk about Bad Videogame Titles?

Most games with Wii and/or U in the title sound really awkward to me. Like Wii Fit U or Pokémon Rumble U. I keep reading them as sentences.

The "New" titles also annoy me.

While the game's future is uncertain, I do have some thoughts about the title.
The four D alliterations feel a bit forced, but I suspect that has a point. The game makes you pay attention to every D in the game, but I think Swery has got some sneaky shenanigans going on there.

The reason why you look for Ds is because Little Peggy told you to "look for D". Simple enough, but I suspect Peggy actually said or meant "look 4D". The game is pretty much about investigating four-dimensionally if you assume the fourth dimension in spacetime is a location in time. You use mementos to travel to the past and uncover what took place. Either way if accurate, then that would explain why they insisted on the forced alliteration that doesn't really seem to relate to the game itself.

Holy shit.

Dog Eat Dog? I thought it was a pretty apt name.

Nier. But that is because it literally means "kidney" in my language (Dutch). I always think of the organ when I see the game.

And I do not like how many Nintendo 64 titles just had "64" in the title. It happens/happened on other platforms as well, but I feel the N64 had way too many games that did this.

Also, Canes Canem Edit >>> Bully.

The Last of Us is pretty stupid.

Beyond:Two Souls

Mass Effect

I like all of those to be honest. And all three actually fit the content of the games.

Beyond:Two Souls

Mass Effect

1 on 3 matte, try again.

The Last of Us is a GREAT title. It works great because it's about post apo world and you see only two characters on the cover. It works great because of the intro. It works great because of the game story and it works again brilliantly in the ending. It's a multi layered titles that is both meaningful, iconic and on par with the themes of the game all along as it unfolds.

Mass Effect is litteraly, the name of the technology at the core of ME's space exploration and golden space age. Also, it's a kick ass name and works as an unendo for the effects of decisions you take in the game.

But yeah, Beyond : Two Souls is a crappy name

Is the game title "Beyond Good and Evil" pretentious too?

I like that name, it has a nice ring to it. But I can't really think of why it would fit the game well to be honest. I do not recall any moral ambiguity or anything like that. Just Good and Evil would be more accurate (which sounds terrible).

I submit Dark, the world's most annoying game to Google.

I hate games with one single English word as title. The other day I learnt about a GAFfer made JRPG with prerendered background called Stasis. Had to use different terms on Google for several minutes before landing on its site.

I agree.

As for Beyond: Two Souls. I agree it is the worst. But I think it was pretty accurate. People use beyond to refer to the "hereafter" or "the unknown" (see definitions). And the word fits more than just one theme of the game. And two souls, well, I think that speaks for itself given the game's themes. The colon separates the two (I can't call it clauses, right? Because Beyond is just one word), so I think it works.

Ha ha! Time for Falcom:

Dinosaur is actually the name of the final boss, not that you (were) are supposed to know when starting the game. The game's a first-person story dungeon crawler with some creepiness to it, but nothing that brings "Dinosaur" or anything prehistoric to mind. It's like calling Ys I "Dark Fact or, I dunno, Asteka Xanadu maybe.
oh wow

took me a while to find this game on google.

I was joking about "Jenseits von Gut und Böse" since Beyond Good and Evil is just the english of saying it.

Beyond Good and Evil is not actually about moral ambiguity, at least directly, but rather an examination of what people consider good and bad (morality systems) and how "evil" has taken the place of bad in many of these systems. In a sense, it is beyond good and evil ("immoral"), but it is not beyond good and bad (amoral). That's the simplest way of putting it anyway lol.

I haven't played much of either game/series, but I heard Xenosaga at least plays around with Nietzsche's philosophy whereas the other doesn't at all. And pretty much all of his titles have a nice ring to them, I don't really blame people for taking the titles.

At least I know exactly what it's about.

Not very succinct I suppose.

I always found FIFA 64 to be especially hilarious. You had FIFA 94, 95, 96... then all of a sudden 64.

Yes, I knew that it does not mean moral ambiguity in a direct sense and that you referred to the German translation. But for this game to refer to moral philosophy seems a bit off, since I recall it being rather black and white instead of the player at least questioning the morality of it all in some sense. But thanks for the explanation, since I am not too familiar with this part of philosophy.

SNES: Super ___

Heh, true. I guess Advance and Super never bothered me as much. Super just makes a game sound like a "super version", instead of being the 64th iteration. Although Advance sounds odd when you think about it. DS, Wii, and, to a lesser extent, the U, do kind bother me though. But I feel it was way more common to name games like that back in the N64 days and numbers are the worst for me personally. Glad MS never (or did they?) slapped 360 after games, for example.

I always found FIFA 64 to be especially hilarious. You had FIFA 94, 95, 96... then all of a sudden 64.

Haha, never had that one, but yes, that is hilariously awkward naming.

Ok, this is special. I have never heard of this title before. And this is coming from someone who is usually up to date on his wifan material.

Wow

New Super Mario Bros. U... I mean... What!?
New Super Luigi U
Rise of the Tomb Raider. Sounds more like a spinoff than an actual sequel of the reboot.

Don't know if it counts, but Darksiders: Deathinitive Edition is stupid. It isn't easy to pronounce too.

Steins;Gate - That semicolon drives me insane.

Times of Lore - Oh, it takes place during an era of storytelling. What?

Mario Bros. - Why is it so hard to type "Brothers"? Could you imagine if other games did it? Bros. in Arms. Bros.: A Tale of Two Sons. Uggh.

Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?

The game is great and the title makes sense for those acquainted with Disgaea, but I usually just call it "Prinny" lol

This was the best you could do Natsume? No one saw any problem with this?

I assume most if not all gaf users know what scat refers to

Destiny annoys me. It sounds more like the project name than any sort of real title. Also because I have no idea what "destiny" means within the context of the story or whatever. I'm guessing I missed something along the way.

This was probably at a time that word didn't have a different context.
Still, very funny!

At least it's following Bungie's naming convention that they have followed for most every single title they have released.

Marathon, Abuse, Oni, Halo, Myth, Minotaur, etc.

Generic, yeah, but it has something to do with the game world.

Yeah. When it was codenames project destiny I thought it was fine. But I don't even see how destiny fits in the game. Every video game protag is destined to be the hero of the game.

Bravely Default
Steins;Gate
Ultra Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Version 2012
Xenoblade
Xenosaga
Piersolar
Metal Gear Solid

Japan needs some english class.

His advice is terrible. Safety search is holding you back!

Nooooooooooooo

I love the series, but BlazBlue is a pretty terrible name. I get the alliteration appeal (works for Guilty Gear after all), but did they really have to leave out a letter for no reason? i'm pretty sure I got up to Continuum Shift calling it "Blazz Blue".
