Can we talk about Bad Videogame Titles?

Bravely Default impresses me because of how it's practically an oxymoron.

But Infinite Undiscovery reigns king. Undiscovery isn't a fucking word, and if it were a word, how would it be infinite? Do you just infinitely not discover things? Wow, that sounds really fucking exciting.

How about 'The Company'? There, Ubisoft saved.

Bulletstorm, Battleborn, Bloodborne, Warstorm, Thunderblade, Killzone, Hellblade.

The school of 'take something to do with fighting and bolt another word onto it to make something we can register as a trademark'.
Bloodborne is a real word. HIV is a bloodborne virus for example. In the context of Bloodborne, the title refers to how the plague of beasts is transferred through blood, as well as things like power.

"Awesome Possum... Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt!"

Came to post this.

________ OF ________. League OF Legends, Heroes OF the Storm, Clash OF Clans, Game OF War, Resonance OF Fate. I don't know why but I almost always dislike titles with the word "of" . There are some good ones though, like Scholar of the First Sin is fine.

LoL had an even worse working title, because it was like "League of Legends: Duels of fate".

At least I know exactly what it's about.

It's like those troll movie titles from Homestuck.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this yet:

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale.

It's awful on all fronts. It is literally just a description of the game with no creativity or though put into it. It's a mouthful to say. Even shortening it to "Playstation All-Stars" is a lot. Its abbreviation is also stupidly long: PSASBR.

It's like they put zero marketing into coming up with a decent title.

Well their idea of marketing was tagging the trailer "super smash bros."

Under Night in-Birth Exe:Late [st]

Looking forward to what letters and symbols are added for the next version.

Can someone explain the meaning of this title? My English is not enough to understand this one.
It's just nonsense really. Don't worry, neither is the English of the people who came up with it.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS

I get that they're slightly different games (same roster, mechanics and DLC but different stages and side modes) but couldn't they at least call it "Smash Bros Universe" and "Smash Bros Dimensions"? Not exactly stellar names either but they're better than just "For Wii U/3DS"

Even just "Smash Bros 3D" and "Smash Bros U" is better, in my opinion.

I'm guessing they just taped 26 pieces of paper with a letter of the alphabet written on each to a dart board and just had at it.

If you had the worlds smartest, most powerful computer search, compile, and analyze all video game names and internet reactions, then use what it learned to produce the "default" video game name, you'd get:

God of War: Ascension

It's got a power fantasy ("God"), violence ("war"), a generic "extreme" word in place of a number so you don't realize how stale the series is ("ascension"), and, best of all, follows the default video game name pattern = "Blank of Blank: EPIC"

Somebody probably brought this up alread but
Divinity: Original Sin 2 takes the price for me. Worst title ever. Like... parody-level bad.

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late.

Look at that name... Would you believe in me if I said it's a REALLY good fighting game? Why would anyone look at that and think "Yep, that's the one. My job is done here"?

EDIT: El Sloth gets it.

Reminds me of the Mega64 sketch of Sakaguchi and his reaction to the name "Final Fantasy 2" lol

It's so old that you don't really think about it anymore, but I would say Mega Man sounds pretty stupid. Resident Evil sounds kind of cheesy too, as does Dead Space.

I cannot believe people naming Dark Souls as an example. The meaning and importance of Dark and Souls are both heavily hinted at in the intro of the game and then demonstrated throughout the game.
I get the Demon's Souls hate though.

Bloodborne is also a perfect name for the game and it becomes obvious not too far into the game.

King Arthur the Roleplaying Wargame is a great game saddled with an unbelievably unwieldy title.

It's more like a mission statement, really.

Infinite Undiscovery is what you find when you go Beyond the Beyond.

I'm not a fan of Life is Strange (the title). It just doesn't do the game justice. If it was released in the 90s, its would probably be called Be Kind, Rewind.

Summertime High School: A Young Man’s Notes—How a New Exchange Student Like Myself Ran Into His Childhood Friend On The School Tour, Then For Some Reason Became Super-Popular With The Girls For His Daily Scoops On The School Photography Club Even Though He Only Takes Panty Shots, And What He Thinks As He Goes On Dates During His Summer Of Island School Life.
Sounds like more of a summary than a title, lol.

"Life is Strange" is somehow too twee even for that game. "Divinity: Original Sin 2" is a joke. Frankly, while "Divinity: Second Sin" is bad it would be way less dumb than that. I can insert any number of Japanese games here too. I feel like I've been okay with them because I've known Japanese games forever, but the moment I would try to name and describe one to someone who hasn't, my tongue wants to roll back into my throat to shut me up.

And come on with the Last of Us/Bloodborne/Killzone posts. For the former, it's evocative, stark and actually frames the themes of the story. How many other game titles do that? Deus Ex? As to the latter two, those are both real words. Bloodborne may be the only time the word "blood" has been in a game title and not been wanky or dumb.
"Kill zone"/"kill box" is actually two words. I'm surprised so many people have never heard it in military movies or through osmosis.

I hate games with one single English word as title. The other day I learnt about a GAFfer made JRPG with prerendered background called Stasis. Had to use different terms on Google for several minutes before landing on its site.

"Stasis game" - first result. All you have to do is add "game" to the end lol.

New Super Mario Bros 2

I mean, there were two New Super Mario Bros before it, DS & Wii, plus the game was released on 3DS.

OK dont call it NSMB 3DS, not even NSMB 3D. New Super Mario Bros 3 would be a good name since its the third and is also on 3DS. How in the world did they thought of 2???

aaarg beaten
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the third New Super Mario Bros. game.
