Canker sores are the worst.

I get them fairly frequently... typically when I bite the inside of my mouth... I've learned that as soon as I do it, for the next day and a half I wash my mouth with Listernine religiously every few hours... since I've started that process I've never gotten one.

I had a horrendous ulcer on the back lower part of my tongue over the last few days which was hell. I can tolerate any sort of pain on my body except in my mouth. It is the most infuriating thing.

If I use listerine twice a day I never get canker sores. Even when I bite my tongue or something stupid it never turns into a sore if I use listerine. Always would hurt for days before.

Just sayin

There was one time, I had Mike's hard for the first time. Had about 7 or 8 sores at once inside my mouth. I've never felt pain like that, it was miserable. I couldn't even drink water or talk, any movement was just sheer pain.

Use alum!

It works like a charm. My mom would use this method when I was a kid and it always works. The stuff tastes a little funny and it can occasionally be difficult to find but basically, if you put some on the sore, hold it there for about a minute. The pain and sensitivity will be all but gone if not completely gone the following morning.

Give it a try.

I'd be really grateful if anyone can figure out how to get this stuff in New Zealand! Is it an American thing? Maybe I'll check out our American specialty stores.

That's what you get for being a dude drinking Mikes Hard Lemonade.

And 7 or 8 sores at once? WAT

Just last week I went through a canker sore outbreak. When I get 1, it usually turns into several. This time I had this thing where the inside of my cheek and lips got all swollen for some reason. I went to the doctor about it, but she didn't seem to think it was any cause for concern.

It sucked, though. I had about 12 of them on my cheeks, lips and tongue. They're all better now.
I think it's because I bite my cheek in my sleep and it turns into a sore which then spreads. Bleh.

It's used as a seasoning. It surely exists where you live. Check your grocery store.

Funny, I just went through this last week. Alum fixed me right up in a day!
That stuff will make you drool like a slobbering dog while you're holding it on the canker sore though!

HereticJ I almost never use mouthwash. I stopped after the Crest Pro Health mouthwash stained my teeth and burned the top layer of skin off my mouth. I just Googled it to make sure I wasn't the only one, and turns out there is a GAF thread about it from 2010:

Hmm, the patches are my favorite sounding option so far. Would they stay on my tongue, or do they only work for lips/cheeks?

Unfortunately, not good for your tongue, because it requires dryness to provide the adhesion. That and the gel can get pretty lumpy, so you probably wouldn't want it on your tongue even if it did work. This stuff IS great for when it's on the side of your mouth or your lip, though.

Hmm the bottom of your tongue I doubt it. I have had them on the side and think I remember them falling off. It's definitely worth a shot. I have tried everything that I know of. I know if it's bad enough you can go to your dentist and they give medicine but mine said it was expensive. I swear by the patches though

Canker sores and allergies are the worst. I had a canker sore on my uvula, so basically any time I swallowed (food, water, spit, etc.) it hurt. You don't realize how often you're just swallowing spit in your mouth until it hurts like a mother fucker every time.

Dude, We share a lot in common. I swear I have the fucking worst allergies. Anytime my nose is clogged I'm so damn miserable because I can't stand breathing through my mouth and not my nose
Every time I get canker sores it seems like they get bigger and end up in the most random spots like the roof of my mouth, my tongue and eventually my uvula. But yeah getting one on your uvula is no fun I couldn't eat the way I wanted to for almost a week. Felt like a needle was poking my throat every time I tried to swallow.

I have a huge sore on the side of my tongue and it's killing me. Every time it brushes against my teeth it sends a jolt of pain down my whole tongue and into my neck. I'm eating a muffin for breakfast and it feels like I'm getting tazed in the mouth every time I chew. I was going to post a pic but it's gross so I decided not to.

So anyway how's your Monday going GAF?

I feel your pain. I sometimes get a big canker sore on the bottom part of my mouth. It always seems to be positioned so that every time I chew, it hurts! It completely ruins the joy of eating for at least a few days.

5 second fix

I got given something like this for the last one I had, as well as anti-biotics. The sore had managed to get infected and the doctor said it was the worst canker sore she'd ever seen. That pain relief stuff would work for maybe 30 minutes at a time, but thankfully the anti-biotics made it go away completely within about three days.

Had 'em my whole life. So did my dad. They sure suck!

Listerine helped mine a bit, and my dad used this pink stuff that he would make that combined pepto bysmal with something else (I'm sure the recipe is easily found on google).

What actually helped tons is when my dad got a way less stressful job, he barely ever gets them anymore, and when I went on some anti stress meds, I also barely get them anymore.

Theres your answer, get less stress in your life.

I also love these threads because of all the people who think they're herpes.

Tried many over the counter stuff, and at the end of the day salt plus water still works best for me. Just rinse your mouth with it like any other mouth wash.

I've had to deal with these things my whole life and as a trumpet player any canker sores on or around my lips can be a nightmare for my playing. I'll outline the things that I've found to prevent and treat them. Im pleased to say that I hardly ever get them any more. This first one is the most important.

1. Limit your exposure to highly acidic beverages. Orange juice is the one that gets me in trouble the most. The acid eats away at the lining of your mouth making you more likely to to get a CS. Soda is also really bad. Drinking stuff like this when you already have a sore will only add extra days of misery. In the past I've gotten complacent and strayed from avoiding acidic drinks usually resulting in a bad CS within a day or two.

It takes a bit of discipline to follow this rule but I cannot overstate how important it is.

2. Treatment and pain management. If you can feel the beginnings of a CS coming on, drinking milk throughout the day can help minimize how bad it can become and even prevent it entirely. You can also alternate between taking ibuprofen and tylenol so that you don't take more pills than what is on the drug's direction labels.

3. See rule 1 again. Yes, it is that important.

Please forgive the wall of text but I had to figure this out to protect my livelihood, not just minimize the pain and duration of canker sores. I feel comfortable and confident In saying that this will help most people who have to put up with these things on a regular basis.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I was fortunate not to experience the typical pain and discomfort that often follows this procedure. This positive turn of events took a nosedive when I got a massive Super Star Destroyer class canker sore directly on one of the stitched up sockets.

Kanka helps. I get bottles of lidocaine when I have a bad sore. The benzocaine in Kanka + however it adheres seems to work better as long as you can reach the sore.

The worst pain I've ever had was a canker sore on my uvula. I feel for you.

I find that these are mostly due to some sort of food allergy for me, but I haven't figured out what exactly. But with braces I've had a couple of occasions where I mashed my inner lip on one of the brackets and had one form. All these remedies work somewhat to dull the pain, but good lord nothing will lessen the durations, once I get one, it's usually 2 weeks before it's completely healed, such bullshit.

I'm sorry for bumping this thread, but I have to vent. I have been getting canker sores for the last 6 months or so, with a new one coming in just as the old one is healing. Whatever - that really sucks but I can deal with one at a time. But recently they've just been piling on. I currently have 6 active canker sores, with one on my fucking uvula. Talking and swallowing bring me pain so bad I sometimes stop mid-sentence to hold back tears. I'm losing weight because eating hurts. The worst part is that nobody knows what the hell causes these things and there's no cure or treatment.

I consider myself a pretty pain-tolerant person. But the canker sore on my uvula might be the worst kind of pain because it's incredibly intense and it's guaranteed to last 1-2 weeks. WHY DO I EVEN HAVE A UVULA JUST CUT IT OFF. UGH.

Sorry again for the bump. Just needed to vent and this thread was already here. Fuck canker sores.

First time ever I got one on my tongue and it was weird. Even after it went away I still have a small hole on the side of my tongue, almost looks as if I had my tongue pierced.

I haven't got one in a year.
So happy.

They always came out when I ate skittles, or citrusy things.

Shit would make me tear up sometimes. And back when I had braces? Da werst

Do you have wisdom teeth?

My first week of college I had a canker sore on the very tip of my tongue. It was agonizing to do pretty much anything, including drink and talk. But I never even considered the possibility to getting one on the uvula. Now I feel like I got off easy.

Im assuming cranker sores and cold sores are different?

Yes, a canker sore is a white blotch inside your mouth. Cold sores are caused by a virus (herpes), canker sores aren't.

Cold sores are just ugly, but don't hurt, a big canker sore can drop you to your knees in pain.

I get both cold sores (somehow got herpes as a kid) and canker sores and honestly, I dread canker sores worse.

If you do get a canker sore, don't put salt on it, it'll dry it out and hurt like a mother fucker.
