Capcom: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies hitting the West [Digital Only Confirmed]

Guys, you remember they skipped the last game of the series right? It was not a matter of retail or digital but of digital or nothing. The faster you compromise and understand that niche titles like AA5 are not viable in another way the better.

Exactly. My hope is that Capcom will compromise too, and release it for £20/$30.

AA has always sold a lot better than your typical niche jRPG. These are the NA figures, until January 2009:
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney - 117k
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice for All - 110k
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations - 92k

Games like Atelier don't even crack the 20k mark and they still get released.

is this NPD data?

Be prepared for a bunch of anecdotes coming your way.

people are over reacting

report 3DS as lost/stolen, contact nintendo, theyll put game on your system. free insurance.

Then someone who regularly games on public transit shames the fuck out of you. It's not as big as in Japan, but it's still relevant in enough of NA and I'm sure it's doubly true in Europe.

nah, i used to take the 3DS everywhere for street pass puzzles and shit.

Um... wow. I'm afraid to ask for the AAI numbers now.

...

...

How much did that one sold?

That's not what I was saying at all, though. I'll buy my copy and be happy with it and those who don't want to support this won't buy it, and that's okay.

Then you must have misunderstood my post, since there are people clearly not okay with people passing on the game due to it being digital only on Nintendo's terms.

Download only? Man that sucks.

This will probably be the first Ace game I don't buy then, unless some miracle occurs with a new account system.

I would buy a physical, limited edition release in a heartbeat, but I'll still be picking up the digital copy day 1. I can't wait! I wasn't expecting this until 2014, so the date is a wonderful surprise.

It's probably worth noting the Atelier games are almost always on disc, the once exception (Totori Vita) became renown for being an out of the blue PSN release. Being on cart probably does eat into the costs, and I have the idea that Capcom suspects their sales would barely drop if at all versus going digital + physical, so they get more money going pure digital versus popular games like RE that need the exposure more, or even something like Monster Hunter they probably see growth potential in that's likely not there at all for AA.

You are literally saying that if people don't buy it, they are punishing "true fans" like yourself.

No, that's literally not what I'm saying.

Then you must have misunderstood my post, since there are people clearly not okay with people passing on the game due to it being digital only on Nintendo's terms.

I guess we must have misunderstood each other, because I don't really care if people want to buy it or not; it's their money. That's always been my stance.

If people who don't/won't purchase eshop-only really go through with not buying the game, and their "missing dollars" is enough to ruin all chance of PW games ever coming over, then Capcom would have made the wrong choice in how to go about the release. Their gamble, everyone loses.

I really don't understand why they couldn't even make a limited print run. Some of the other sources I've seen say that at least one game in the series sold double what they predicted (I think it was posted within the last two pages) and each game has seen at least one reprint. Like some other posters, I'll settle for buying this if it's priced cheaply, but I'm not happy with the decision overall. Something like Senran Kagura I could see having a chance of release in English only on DD (and despite my posts in another thread, I would probably buy it at some point). Maybe with time I'll feel better about it, but I just really do not like Nintendo's online services, so a DD only release when they definitely could have at least tried for some kind of physical copy just rubs me the wrong way.

That goes more to the second point of me not being able to comprehend the sentiment. I guess I feel sorry for you that a fan of the games will be missing out on the next big title because of this.
What is so difficult to comprehend? I dont like the way Nintendo handles downloads, Im not willing to pay $40 for the game to be tied to the hardware nor am I willing to buy the game twice because I cannot lend the game out if I buy it as a download.

Then address those people specifically, I personally dont care. I think its silly, but that feeling is clearly mutual. I would just like to be excited about a game that I thought wouldn't even get localized at all in relative peace. I couldn't care less what you do with your money.

This game could have eaaaaaaaaaaaasily not made it over at all.

I just don't get the logic of 'I own every single ace attorney game, but because I can't physically own the new one, I won't even bother buying it or even playing it'.

eshop is bad, but you'd think the positive of a brand new ace attorney game would override that hurdle.

And this is a single player linear game that probably takes ~24 hrs to finish. If you are that scared of robbery, just marathon it in a few days at home. o_O.

I've made tons of weird compromises to play funky japanese stuff over the years... dling the game off the eshop at lower price than retail due to no tax is nothing.

These aren't even close to the sales they pull in Japan and I guess there's a downward trend sales-wise starting from the first game (and I imagine AAI sold even worse than AA4), but I was honestly led to believe the numbers were much worse with how Capcom has been lamenting about the sales. Not sure what they expect from a visual novel-esque title in the western market.

Worst comparison all day...
As an active part of the eshop ecosystem, it seems pretty apt. No account system blows, yeah but if my system was ever stolen, I'm positive Nintendo would replace all my games, like they did when my Wii bit the dust.
Refusing to buy a game in a series you love because its digital only is insane to me. The eshop is fine, there's no need for an account system, although it would be nice, yeah.

Hard to comprehend from my perspective. Like I've said before, I understand why people want to skip this because of the digital only restriction, but if I'm a major fan of something I'll obtain it through any means I can.

I'd rather have a digital only release than no release at all. Still disappointing of course. Dammit Capcpom, at least lower the price a bit.

Are you not going to buy the game you really want to play because its DD only?
I'm not. I really want to play it and it was one of my primary reasons for buying a 3DS, but until there's a physical release or an account system for the eShop, I'll go without.

And I should clarify the problem isn't with DD. It's Nintendo's implementation of DD.

I'm all for principles and stuff, but people not buying this because of digital only are clinically insane.

It's Ace Atourney for God's sake!

Just recently I've imported the disc versions Okami HD and Journey at a higher price than the digital versions, because I can not fucking stand DD. I don't see myself spending full price for a digital version in almost every scenario :( Will wait for collectors edition.

I'm more of the opinion that it is far easier to lose a game cartridge than the 3DS itself. Making the "I don't want to lose my game if I lose my 3DS" argument no sense to me at all.

Hassle of filing police report if you lose 3DS still apply.

The current DD system for 3DS\WiiU is awful.

That said, it hasn't stopped me from going all-digital on both systems.

Day 1!

Man, if only you were around for that Okamiden fiasco.

HD-stupidity taking over handheld development, basically.

Losing one game if you misplace the cart vs losing your entire game collection if you misplace the 3DS.

You missed the point. They already decided it isn't worth a retail release of the games in the west. They're giving it another shot in a different format, not the other way around. If they couldn't do it digitally, we probably wouldn't be getting it all just like AAI2.

Heck, the absolute only way we'll ever get a physical version again is if this blows previous game sales in the series and capcoms expectations massively out of the water. If people don't buy it, we'll just never get a game in the series on 3DS again.

And while Nintendo's the worst on the digital front for consoles, they're NOT the worst period. Just look at D2D/GameFly or Digital River, the former lost many games with the purchase then as I recall lost some when they were unable to sell despite putting the downloads back up beforehand (should've skipped their NWN2 sale since I just got it on GOG in the end), and Digital River's just an abomination in every possible way it seems. Can't redownload after a month I think unless you buy "download insurance", and THAT'S only good for a few more months or year. At least Nintendo has really good customer service in the US and so long as the system works I can freely redownload anyway.

I really do wonder how many are ignoring the state of the DS that late into the generation. Most momentum was gone and piracy seemed to have completely devastated the platform, I really do think this would've done way better retail; hell AAI2 probably would've done way better as a 3DS retail exclusive title than AAI did as a DS retail title.

What if you want to play the game again in a few years or borrow it to a friend or family member?

No, I just love having my physical copies of my favroite franchises. I only do it with Kingdom Hearts, Zero Escape and Ace Attorney, everything else I could care less, but those I just love seeing all the boxes next to each other.

I like having physical copies of stuff from my favorite franchises too, but that doesn't mean I'm going to not buy this just because I can't put it on my shelf.

Capcom has already chosen to not localize one of these games before. Now they're giving an avenue to buy this, but then people won't pick it up.

Don't expect any more AA games after that I guess...

I wish I had more friends and family that would play AA T_T

they all playing their dotas and Call of duties.

And it wouldn't even matter because I know zero people irl with 3ds's.

If you foolishly misplace $250 of anything, you deserve to lose it.

Yup, cause there's no possible situation in where you could lose track of your handheld.. Or phone... Or car keys

You're kinda jumping the shark, dude. You're pretty clearly just here to bag on people.

Well, this is what I get for not checking the Gaming side most of today...

Digital only or not, I don't care. I'm purchasing anyway. I'm just very glad it finally is confirmed for Western release.
