Capcom, Grin's Bionic Commando Sells A Meager 27K in U.S.

Best swing mechanic in video games
What? No way. Spider-Man 2's swing mechanics beat the shit out of Bionic Commando's. The way you have to seem no sense of weight or momentum is just completely unsatisfying.

That's not really a lesson learned. There has been convincing research done by companies like EEDAR and others showing that in many cases, demos end up harming a game's sales--most likely in more cases than when it helps. There isn't a concrete rule on demos for publishers to follow; it's really down to the case of each particular game.

In Bionic Commando's case, though, the Xbox 360 demo helped sales. The 360 to PS3 ratio is almost shocking.

No sense of weight or momentum? ....ok

Wait, what, there's in-game advertising? In Bionic Commando? For what?

Edit: What the fuck Capcom.

Sadly in game advertising is abundant in certain parts and you will be subjected to ads from Nvidia and Alienware during your travels which is somewhat distracting.

http://gamerlimit.com/2009/05/in-game-advertising-to-become-1bn-industry-by-2014-cant-wait/

I really hate in-game advertising, as it totally ruins the immersion of the game. When I was playing bionic commando, swinging around and feeling badass, I was just sad when I saw that n-vidia or pepsi advertisements were just shoved in your face.

I'm amazed they expanded so fast, the PC GRAW games were really fucking rough.
I think the PC version of GRAW1 was ridiculous in co-op. You had to go a full hour without dying to beat the first mission. They smoothed things out in GRAW2 though. That being said I don't understand why they went out of their way to make a different game than the console versions.

The future:

1. Civilization has collapsed
2. Buildings in shambles
3. Urban jungle
4. Concrete strewn everywhere
5. A literal war occurring in the streets
6. Shining, spotless, 100% intact advertising billboards for high-end discretionary spending consumer goods.

uh... huh.

Okay, I laughed at #6. Well played sir.

Don't think that NPD has published it. But it's pretty clear that the XBL demo helped BC's sales on the Xbox 360 more than it hurt.

As it has been said in many, many reviews - the swinging mechanic is great, the story, bullshit purple fog and everything else is just a big "What the fuck?"

Spoilers:

Your missing wife? She's your arm. Super Joe - The hero to all? Traitor for no good reason. Nobody likes anybody, they're dicks to each other the whole game. Mysterious sniper? is not explained at all.

Makes me wonder what's going to happen to Ben Judd after all this.
:lol

Well, as a Capcom fanboy who has an emotional vested interest in the financial well being of the company, I can only hope and pray that the ingame advertising, coupled with some channel stuffing of about 200k shipped copies worldwide, and the revenues from Bionic Commando Rearmed at least have Capcom.... breaking even on this whole debacle.

Sony had a big first party release. It wasn't going to do well against that, demo or not.

As I said in the NPD thread, this makes pretty damn sad as I love the new Bionic Commando. The MP in particular scratches that Lost Planet itch so damn well...

Easily a 4 outta 5 for me, both SP and MP

I wholly admit the game has some serious issues, but when it comes down to it, it's very fun to play once you learn the swinging mechanics. I really enjoyed it and am on my second play-through.

EDIT - What saddens me is that this seems to be headed toward "The game GAF loves to hate" status where the game is shit on as if it were the worst game ever when half the people doing so have never played it. Meanwhile there are far worse games that people hardly mention. That Turok game last gen suffered the same fate, although BC is a far better game than that.

He's apparently an industry insider of some sort. The ratio must be really bad for PS3 if we take UFC's 2:1 ratio as a given...
Ah, I see, in which case he's not allowed to state it.

If it's worse than 2:1, sheesh.

Yep,
you are told at the end of the game that in order for anyones bionics to work with their body, it has to be "fused with someone close to them." I remember speaking to the TV at that point: "WTF, so they poured my wife's soul into my arm, huh?"

This...makes no sense, but now I'm intrigued.

Geek is Mike McWhertor from Kotaku. So, yeah, he knows his stuff.

Since he can't say, I heard a rumor it was 6:1 to 7:1 in favor of the 360 version. I have no link and am not going to go digging. Take it for what it's worth. Not much.

Well, Grin tried to chew more than it could, doing three high-profile releases and under-delivering in all of them.

I've heard they let go of around 150 staff members recently. I wonder if it won't be worse than that in the upcoming months.

Different development teams did each game. And it's not like Bionic Commando underachieved. For some inane reason, idiot bloggers and messageboard users thought this was an open world game when no one ever said that. Quite to the contrary in fact.

It's a very well made game that will hopefully go down as a cult classic. It's a shame there was absolutely no marketing whatsoever for it. It just seemed like the bastard stepchild of Capcom, despite being one of their classic IPs. I feel sorry for Ben Judd and the rest of GRIN. They deserved more.

I would take issue with the "well made game" part of your statement if for nothing else because you have to redo challenges and re-collect collectibles when you die. What a terrible idea.

I didn't play Spiderman 2, but you can't be describing Bionic Commando here. How long did you play ?

i'm actually not surprised that the game bombed. i guess maybe Grin thought that people would actually enjoy the multiplayer by playing the demo. i thought it was terrible and actually got me to change my mind about buying the game.

the lesson learned shouldn't be, "don't put out a multiplayer demo only" or "don't put out a demo if it's not good" - the lesson learned should simply be: make your multiplayer good. the cod4 demo was multiplayer only and that did just fine.

Indeed, hopefully history will view it as this generation's God Hand. The fact that this thread is trashing it when it should be championing it is a travesty.

Only real issues I have are the story (stupid but ignorable) and the load times. Too many people have no idea how to play this game and never bothered to learn. I think I died from radiation once and that's because I wasn't paying attention to the waypoint indicator. The game really isn't all that hard either.

Do we have the numbers for the XBLA/ PSN remake?

I seem to remember the XBLA/PSN remake selling 400 000. Grin probably would have been better off making a 2D Bionic Commando 2. Ouch

Poor Ben Judd

Just out of curiosity what's the time frame they're expecting to sell 1.5 million in?
NOoooooooOOOOOO!
What's the problem when both RE5 and SF4 over performed by so much? RE5 alone covered the sales BC was supposed to make.

I single handedly convinced about 37k people that were thinking about buying Bionic Commando to buy Valkyria Chronicles and a crate of ginger ale instead.

There's no way Dark Void is selling that much, but I wouldn't be shocked if Lost Planet sells more than 2.7 million, evening everything out. It looks absolutely fantastic.

And to whoever said it, one or two bombs is in no way going to break Capcom.

This game received no hype at all, even from the hardcore side. I forgot it even came out till I heard a couple of podcasts talk about. Seemed like an okay game but one that I was not going to spend $60 on. Now that its DOA, I may get it for $15 or less.

Screw all you doubters who didn't even give it a chance. After the first half hour of learning the swinging, it was awesome action all the way through.

Bionic Commando for NES also had some dodgy controls until you figured them out and took some learning to effectively use swinging. How easily people forget...

another failure of the 59.99 standard. not every game is worth that price. they need to drop the price on this fast because i would really consider checking it out at the pricepoint of 29.99 or below.
