Capcom hopes to update RE 1-3 for modern PCs

people are going to laugh at this notion, but for REmake and RE0 it's pretty surprising how good they look in HD even with their pre-rendered backgrounds.

and the PC versions always had resolution selection. i think it went up to 1024 x 768 back then.

Sadly only 640x480 for RE1&2 (800x600 for the rare PowerVR version of RE1).
But at least up to 1280x1024 for RE3 (can't remember if it supported even higher).

Capcom USA senior VP Christian Svensson replied: “Reqeusts [sic] noted guys. On the [Resident Evil] 1 – 3 front, we have been trying to get [Capcom Japan] to let us update these titles to run on Win 7/8 and then get them out on more digital marketplaces for PC, but dicussions [sic] have been ongoing for more than a year and we’ve not made progress.”

I hope this isn't Christian's blood...

They already exist in Japan, all it would need is a translation... that exists since the original release of those games.

So yeah, they have no excuse.

Would buy all three day one. Why the fuck would Capcom Japan be against this idea? They had 600 people working on part six, but they can't spare a small team to get these all up and running and out on Steam? Dumb.

The Remake and RE0 backgrounds might, the Re1-3 no way.

Looks okay.

You don't exist, I'm not buying that someone is defending OG tank controls.

The relative controls are necessary due to the static camera, and there's nothing wrong with them. It takes about 2 seconds to get used to, and it prevents you from running back and forth between camera angle changes because you were holding one direction to run.

The slow move and turn speed, as well as having to stop to shoot, are good things for the genre.

Certainly made the first appearance of Hunters all the more terrifying. That plus their one hit kills. Those things freaked me out for a solid year after playing through it. :P

I think Japanese companies are waking up to the idea that they enjoy money.

Concurrently, they are realizing that Steam literally prints money for them.

Yeah, I am very pleased with how Dark Souls 2 is being handled.

It is just a bit sad to read how stubborn Capcom Japan can be, this isn't the first time Sven has mentioned how difficult it is to convince them to port one of their multi-platform titles to PC.

We didn't even get the RE5 DLC / RE5 Gold :facepalm

Capcom gonna Cacpcom.

I'd be more worried if they've been making smart decisions this gen, but they haven't. Sooner or later Japan will "get" the PC market. Just hoping it happens before they crash.

I would no longer need consoles if that were the case, a great day.

I would say no.

"Hey kids you remember those consoles, don't worry you can just get a pc with cool equipment to play games reel gud on it."

*shows all that shit to the parents for Christmas, and expects them to put it together*

Parent:(luaghs),

Anyways

Good news everyone , this sounds like a good idea from capcom.

I'd be ecstatic if they remade 2 & 3 ala RE:Make. Maybe get the whole set going with new high res rendered backgrounds and widescreen and port to EVERYTHING.

Maybe they can do some tricks with the prerender backgrounds, like you know, re-render them? At least with Remake.

- What is it?

They're not against it. They're just incompetent with messed up priorities.

Capcom, if you're reading this: you have my money. Just fucking do it. I don't have any consoles at the moment but I've been wanting to play through the whole series lately.

Just curious, what's stopping them from porting the XBLA/PSN version of RE4 to PC? Maybe I'm oversimplifying things, but I don't see why that would be any more difficult than messing with the trainwreck of a PC version from five years ago.

Laptops and prebuilt machines.

That sounds like they just want to get the original games to run on a PC not that they plan to give us real remakes. I wouldn't make much sense financially anyway.

I'd vastly prefer REmake even with the pre-rendered backgrounds at their regular res so long as they make it look somewhat clean like what Dolphin is able to do.

It's probably way too much work though, so I doubt I'll ever see that.

I would throw money at whoever sold RE1/2/3 on PC, but what I almost orgasmed at the thought of was Outbreak 1 and 2 on PC. If they're not going to give me them on PS3/4, at least let them live forever on PC.

I'd buy these day one no lie! Don't fuck with the tank controls because of all those whiners! Providing an option for them is cool but don't take out tank controls since it's the way it's meant to be played.

Looks okay.

No one is gonna be playing RE3 at that resolution though.

This is more realistic.

REmake holds up much better though, but it could still be updated definitely.

It doesn't make that much of a difference on 1080p+ displays.

They should re-render REmake's backgrounds. If they still have the code.

I don't see why they wouldn't have the code (they have that of older RE games as evidenced by eg the GameCube releases of RE2,3,CV).

And they have the assets as RE:Umbrella Chronicles was using them AFAIK.

Japanese companies had, at some point, the reputation of getting rid of game code and assets once they had shipped the game. I think they stopped doing that and started keeping everything in the 2000s. Maybe Capcom wasn't like that; one would hope.

The pre-rendered backgrounds are probably the biggest issue with this. Still I would be okay with a GOG version of the PC version or the originals. I still have the PC version of 2 but it doesn't like my windows 7.

I don't think Capcom want to update 0 and REmake. If that would have been the case it would have been ported to other platforms than the GCN already.

Are the old PC ports of these games perfect ports (at least accurate to the console version, not buggy)?

Now people can replay these and see just how bad they really are. They should just leave everything the same, tank controls and everything and just update it so it'll run ok on modern machines and OS'. Then again if they take the tank controls out 90% of the horror in the games will be gone.

You do realize RE4 has tank controls too right? There is nothing wrong with the controls in these games... everything is designed around them from environments to enemies.
