Press release:
Capcom's latest chapters into the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Portable and Monster Hunter 2 (Dos), have shipped a combined total of over 1 million units!
-Monster Hunter 2 sets series record, shipping 500,000 units within 2 days of release-

Capcom is pleased to announce that Monster Hunter 2 (Dos) for the PlayStation® 2 (PS2) system has reached 500,000 units shipped as of February 17, 2006; within 2 days of its February 16, 2006 Japanese release. Combined with Monster Hunter Portable for the PlayStation® Portable (PSP™) system, the latest installments in the Monster Hunter series have shipped over 1,000,000 units in Japan.

In the Monster Hunter series, the player becomes a hunter roaming a vast wildness in search of incredibly strong, powerful monsters. This Hunting Action game series, with its depth and breath-taking graphics, has garnered strong word of mouth as a game that even those unfamiliar with Hunting Action games can enjoy to the fullest. The first game in the series, Monster Hunter for PS2, breathed new life into the action genre with its originality, eventually garnering the coveted Most Distinguished Game award at the GAME AWARDS 2002-2003. Furthermore, Monster Hunter Portable, released end of last year for the PSP™, has also surpassed the 500,000 units shipped mark, becoming a key hit title in driving PSP™ sales in Japan.

As the latest entry in the series, Monster Hunter 2 (Dos) does not simply add new weapons, armor, and hunter's awards; it also introduces players to day and night in the game world, breeding season, and climate changes. By introducing these concepts of season and time, players can enjoy an unprecedented variety of hunting situations. The new powerful monsters lurking in the swamps and snow covered mountains that make up part of the harsh lands of the hunting "field" are eager to greet the latest group of would-be hunters! Also, by connecting via USB to a PSP™ with Monster Hunter Portable, players can enjoy a number of new elements in the game!

Whoa, what does "Dos" stand for? Not Ms-Dos...?

Come on, Dos! Release in the U.S. already. BTW, how well did the first game sell in the States? I hear it didn't do too well.

No, I was under the impression they released Monster Hunter 2 for the PC on the DOS OS.
Yep. System requirements are 386SX-25 or better, 4MB RAM, 20MB hdd space and VGA or 100% compatible. There's no Hercules support, which has really riled up the PC MH forums. :/ No word on DR-DOS compatibility. Fingers crossed.

Wow, didn't know it was that popular. Already out and it beat FF: DoC and getting close to KHII. Fuck.

Well at least there's some justice in the world. I'm still hesitant to lay down my cash until I hear how much time you need to put into the game before you can fight some of the interesting stuff.

wtf are Capcom doing by not releasing Monster Hunter games on the DS? Surely that is a no brainer right now

:lol oh no you didn't

watch this thread become a DS vs PSP flamefest now.

I thought the first Monster Hunter was a decent attempt at ripping off PSO but sadly completely mangled by the the combat system and camera.

Have they fixed these things in the follow up(s)?

The monster hunter we got here was really bad control wise if I remember right. It used both analog stick, one to move and one to attack and it was just awfull (I'm not sure I remember right so please someone confirm or deny this)

Anyway I'm wondering if the control changed for the new PS2 version but also since the PSP only got one stick how does it control and does it work well?

Impressive numbers for Monster Hunter 2. The series really took off after the PSP release. Might be a million seller on PS2.

It's doing incredibly well, but a million is a stretch.

Predictions for this weekend were around 300-350k which sounds about right from this announcement. 750k is a possibility though, and Capcom have definitely created a big new franchise with this. I think the US version (or remix or whatever it was) selling more than RE4 when released last Jan was an indication of what to come...

Now they just have to work on pushing the games in the west where I believe the original didn't do to well. Push MHP first then synergise it with MH2 and push that.

They better bring this to the US. I will start a pointless letter writing campaign if I have to. Monster Hunter is goddamn great. Anyone who didn't get it should be ashamed of themselves. Ashamed.

Do you know if it requires extended or expanded memory? I might have to make a boot disk.

I'd love to hear some impressions of this game. The video at gametrailers looks awesome, and famitsu gave it a 38 iirc. I think the US date is May.

I don't have the actual numbers, but I remember Monster Hunter sold something like 80k in its first month. So it's over 100k by now for sure... hopefully enough to warrant MH2 coming over, isn't MHFreedom already confirmed for a Western release?

How well has the first MH sold in Japan, did it see a similar resurgence as MHFreedom? I'm a bit suprised because initially MHFreedom sold ok, but it's been selling goo quantities ever since release... it sold of came back from the dead and all at once the Japanese people decided Monster Hunter should be cool...

Great news for Capcom (how I love thee!)

I was midly interested in MH before, but I never got around to it... I'll probably give MH2 a try.

Only necessary if you use the S3 ViRGE-accelerated mode, apparently. That won't be an issue for me unless I upgrade.

Can someone explain to me how this game plays?

It slipped under my radar - whats the gameplay like, can you play it online?

Its awesome. No good offline. Online is like PSO. Kind of odd dual analog control but it works, especially when typing. Questing is fun, their is some grinding, but not too much and even on boring missions you can get attacked and killed. The weapons and armor are awesome, especially seeing everyone elses gear and wondering how they got it. People online are nice and willing to help out, so forming a party is easy. You should definitely try it out if you haven't, also check out the Monster Hunter 2 website for videos on the second one. Also John Harker I got the Killer 7 artbook today. Worth a look for the serious fan.

What game is that?

Anyway, I'm really happy that Capcom has a hit in their hands, they are one of my favourite developers and it's long overdue they get sales they deserve.

Well, I just imagined it having the kind of legs the PSP version has.

That sure looks like a lot of fun!

Seriously, why isn't MGS4 on DS???? :( :( :(
:lol :lol on man :lol

Monster Hunters is a brilliant idea, although the execution of it has not been great. It could really be a great series imo; it's oozing with potential.

I'm also happy that Capcom's got a game that's selling well. No idea if the series is any good or not. :P

Somehow I think even Capcom is surprised at how well this game is selling...

Without a doubt. THe first one did ok in Japan, nothing spectacular, adn suddenly MHF just picks right up with weekly sales and keeps going and going and going, and now MH2 is selling well apparently. It really sort of happened out of nowhere.

It really sort of happened out of nowhere

The hit of MH start from PSP version , MH and MH G did around 250 k each in japan . But as you can see that MH Portable selling just pass 460k last week is the indication of how popular MH 2 will be. This game got a really good praise (and score) from Famitsu (it has won game of the year or something) . Anyway , from the online game being , This is the only game that can make the big impact to japanese online market since FF11. Congratulations Capcom! (I never enjoy this type of game though)
