Capcom share holders do not approve stock take over defense

Buys capcom
Releases multi-plats for this generation
Makes them exclusive

Who will be the lucky one to buy them?

Nintendo seems like the best option. Capcom needs to mine their old ips without bastardizing the gameplay or the tone of those games and Nintendo seems to know how to do that better than anyone.

but whomever it is so long as they make another DMC and Street Fighter im fine with it.

Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to buy Capcom?

IIRC Capcom have around $160 million in cash, but another billion or so in investments, assets and the like. I'd imagine all told it would be 1.5-2 billion to buy the company outright, but obviously that depends on what happens in the near future.regarding their value.

Monster hunter would be a pretty big get if it was permanently nintendo. I think tons of people would be disappointed to not see RE7 on Ps4, though.

Nah, the series peaked on PSP. The MH devs are lazy hipsters. I don't think Capcom is worth buying to anyone right now, unless at fire sale prices. Their IP's are the only good thing they have. Their devs and studios are junk.

I read it as 'tower defense' and yeah I mean I don't think their focus should be on solely tower defense games.

It's been said, but IF they get bought, I'm in the Nexon/GungHo camp. A company like Nintendo doesn't have the manpower to fully utilize their own IPs, let alone try and revive dormant franchises like Megaman. Also, with their console business in disarray and their handheld business in rapid decline, making a huge purchase like this just doesn't make sense.

The problem with Nintendo buying Capcom is there in no guarantee the talent at Capcom will stay. Where did all the Rare talent go to? Even key talent left Retro. Yeah, they would have more IPs but what good is it to have it if you don't have the talent to develop it? I read somewhere where a Nintendo employee from Japan said that he doesn't recall anyone leaving. For whatever reason Nintendo employees are pretty loyal. That's one of the reasons why I think it would be in Nintendo's best interest to use their loads of cash to hire new talent or recruit (or 'steal') from other companies that would mesh well with their gaming philosophies and culture. I believe Nintendo has been doing the former as far as I know.

Something needs to be done for Nintendo to have shorter development cycles and more ouput of games but I don't think buying a huge company would be the best the solution.

Hmm.

Do we know roughly what capcom is actually worth?

(potential Neogaf kickstarter?)

edit: Ah,ok.

Sounds reasonable, who wants to start up the kickstarter :D

Who said exclusively Nintendo manpower will work on Capcom IP's? You don't buy a company with development teams just to lay off people. It's in your interest that these people stay.

Why do you make it sound like this is a Nintendo only probability? Do you somehow mean that if Sony or MS buys them all the talent will want to stay but if Nintendo does they will scatter like rats?
If anything a lot of studios and individuals have expressed that they like the safety of working with Nintendo, a company that is known for not laying off developers.

Anyway, i have no idea what will happen to Capcom. For me it is an unfortunate event that a company that important is under such trouble anyway.
I would prefer Capcom to be Capcom, and even though i don't want to go back to my usual anti-public company rhetoric, because i am certain that investors are now killing the company they destroyed by forcing tactics the company was unaccustomed to from the get go, we have a lot to think about regarding how Capcom got in this place.

It is not on my interest to see the IP ending on one platform, i game on all of them anyway, but if that happens, which i personally doubt, it think the company that better understands the IPs is Nintendo.

I sure as hell don't want them to fall on the hands of some company that will focus the IPs on pachinko and mobile.

No one would be buying the company, they would be buying majority shares in the stock of the company, which is shy of 500 million. This would be enough for the share holder to more or less "control" the company. 1200+ developers, dozens of IPs and buildings to house them all in, sounds perfect for a company that needs more developers, that company is Nintendo, mostly everyone else mentioned would be firing 95% of the staff, and only keeping a few IPs. Nintendo has the money, they shouldn't even be thinking about this honestly. It isn't even something they will really see on Wii U, but it's successor will thank them for this.

Any deal will take time, and game development takes about 2 years, so you are looking at 2017, the time when we should expect a new console from Nintendo, announcing RE7 exclusive in 2016 as well as anything else they will be making, would be great for Nintendo and Capcom since Capcom could really use Nintendo's quality control and their patience to revive old IPs.

I really don't know why Nintendo would buy Capcom. It would be a huge investment for a lot of declining or mostly dead IPs without a big chance of a large sales boost. I would love for it to happen as a Nintendo fan, but it probably doesn't make a lot of business sense. I could see a Western company like Warner Brothers or Amazon buying them like others have said, though.

Nintendo doesn't have 3rd party support, so 1200 more developers and dozens of new established IPs to work on, makes perfect sense, especially when some of those IPs are keys to your business (monster hunter on a Nintendo portable) Nintendo not doing this, is stupid, there is no better move, and it benefits Capcom greatly because Nintendo would bring the quality way up while not forgetting old IPs, that is sort of Nintendo's thing.

CAPCOM has had nice interactions with both Microsoft and Nintendo.

Nintendo:
  • Ace Attourney is a iconic and popular franchise exclusive to Nintendo systems
(with the occasional iOS ports, but lol DS is best.)
  • Monster Hunter is a very popular franchise in the Asian market with the latest iterations appearing exclusively on Nintendo Systems.
  • The Mega Man series and DuckTales Video Game are examples of Masterpieces in gaming and appeared first on NES and helped CAPCOM rise to where they are now
  • Sakurai knows Mega Man better than CAPCOM

Microsoft:
  • Dead Rising sells quite well as a Microsoft Exclusive, prompting Microsoft to reserve future games and DLC such as Dead Rising 2 DLC and Dead Rising 3 Game and DLC.
  • During Game for Windows Live (GFWL) life CAPCOM published some of their famous Console titles onto the PC with exclusive content and features including Xbox LIVE services. Most game like Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV were quite optimised and ran beautifully on Windows Hardware, while titles such as Lost Planet and Lost Planet 2 made use of DX10 and DX11 showcasing beautiful D3D API features. CAPCOM's PC ports were ambassadors of the GFWL service.

Those points are off the top of my head. Surely CAPCOM will find a good suitor.

Feel free to add or use the list.

Capcom has been going downhill but they still have a lot of franchises that are close to my heart. I want those games to survive. I really don't want sony or nintendo to buy them because the chances of seeing their games on PC is pretty damn small. I have a ps4 but eventually it is nice to play an older game that I had on console but then bought for 5e from steam sale and crank up the graphics.

And that would mean limited variability on hardware power, on input method, on interface, and so forth. For example, what if I want a more powerful system that uses a Wii Mote as its primary input? Too bad for me. What if I prefer touch controls and want an interface like iOS? Sucks to be me.

Not necessarily. Look at Google's "Project Ara," or even just the PC market. I could imagine the big 3 agreeing upon stepped graphics increases as time went on. The user would simply remove the weaker graphics chip and put in a new one. Sony, MS, and Ninty would agree on the standard, and chip makers could develop chips that fit within the standard (with a reasonable amount of variability). Chip makers/sellers could even add features exclusive to their brands to increase the value proposition. For example, Nintendo could add Dolphin hardware to their chip to allow their buyers to play GCN and Wii games- as could Sony and Microsoft. This also solves the problem of emulation for the later consoles. Cutting edge graphics features could also be experimented with by adding exclusive features to high-end chips.

I do not suffer from an inability to understand the concept. I have a B.A. in economics from an Ivy League university, and I'm working on a masters in statistics; if you want to play the "bow before my authoritah" card, I will grind you in to the dust. Personally, I'd prefer we not play that card, as I don't think it reasonably supports our arguments.
I questioned no one's credentials, I was simply responding to an attack.

Practically speaking, tertiary/non-standard controllers have never succeeded on any platform in memory, including PC. It's important to distinguish between what is technically possible and what is economically feasible. Could you produce a Wii-mote like controller for the PC? Yes. In fact, they already have. Making the product commercially viable is a completely different beast, however; the product never really took off because peripherals never do. The "biggest" success stories are Kinect and the Wii Fit board, and both of those saw a brief push from third parties and then collapsed in to nothingness

This is true, however I would argue that this lack of success is due in part to the segmented console market. I also think the Wii brand of systems proves you can deal with this fragmentation reasonably well by ensuring that most games produced simply offer a myriad of controller options in software, and offering software/hardware bundles. As long as the hardware produced is of a high quality (like Nintendo's stuff is), then this shouldn't be much of a problem- so long as the hardware manufacturer has the capital to get the product out in the market. People will simply buy the controllers they want to buy, and the free market will sort it out.

For the sake of actually programing user input however, there may need to be certain standards established- like what is a standard winged controller, or what is a standard remote controller, and what is a standard gamepad controller. The big 3 could also handle this problem as well.

I would be 100% okay if Nintendo or Sony were to buy Capcom. Perhaps they would allow for a proper Mega Man game to be made, or perhaps a new Onimusha..?

If capcom does indeed go up for sale, id rather it not be any of the big 3 so the titles will stay multi-platform as they are now.

Unless you're a pathetic corporate cheerleader for one of the big three, I don't see how anyone could want Sony, MS, or Nintendo to grab most of the shares. We MIGHT have a chance of getting some games on PC if MS were to control Capcom. No chance that their IP's leave Nintendo or Sony's platforms.

I'm hoping for a major third party with tons of money to throw around to step in.

No need to buy assets. Just need to buy more than 50% of shares in order to take control.

Zenimax? :D
It might be the only chance Resident Evil goes back to Mikami, assuming he even cares at this point.
Anyway, I agree.

Sony is losing money and in debt, but they aren't bankrupt, in fact I'm pretty sure Sony has more money than Nintendo. Nintendo's down to like... what, 3 billion?
Sony's problem is that it has some areas that are doing well (like video games) propping up others that are in dire straits, similar to the Blizzard/Vivendi situation, but in a much less parasitic manner.

Better Nintendo/Sony/MS than some Chinese mobile dev that'd have them shitting out f2p free runners or whatever the hell for cell phones*

*this is totally what's going to happen :(

Yeah and I'm sure Sony would be willing to part with a sizable sum of cash if it meant bolstering the PS portfolio by a large amount and effectively denying large games to their competitors.

This clearly means nothing, but Capcom is releasing something like 20 VC games to Nintendo's console and handheld within the year. They're one of the biggest VC developers Nintendo has.

A partnership just makes sense between the two.

So if Nintendo gets it, can they commission a Shaolin Monks style game with Bayonetta and Dante?

They also canceled their big exclusive for 3DS, Legends 3. And Lost Planet 3 nor Street Fighter never came out on Wii U. No one is any more likely than anyone else.

I love the idea of Nintendo, but deep down, I just don't want the company to be gutted by a mobile dev. I'd rather a company that cares about the heritage and would support nearly all of Capcom's IPs and current dev teams. Nintendo would do this, can you say anyone else would?

Could Sega even afford Capcom? If it had to be a game company one of the big 3 seem more likely.

Not that this could happen, but it would be amusing to see Valve buy Capcom and use that as a springboard to help launch/promote the steambox in a more wide manner. With their legacy IP, they would have plenty of mascots to choose from to help get it out the gates that would relate to more "traditional" console gamers.

They had 10 billion, but they burned through a lot of it in the past few years, I know they are down to AT LEAST 6 billion.

Well Forbes says 5$ Billion, but according to Wii U Daily (quoting their financial report) it's $10 Billion. We can go with Forbes for argument's sake though. Either way it's enough cash.

They killed MML3 because of Inafune leaving. SF was on 3DS of all places and does anyone care about Lost Planet?

As I stated, the VC releases mean nothing. However to Nintendo, who needs to bolster their portfolio in all games retail/VC. Capcom is already familiar with Nintendo's architectures and Nintendo likes resurrecting IP's for no reason. It's a perfect logical match.

Ms would be an interesting one as it would be a quick but expensive way of expanding there up. A left field one could be Amazon depending how serious they are in the games market
