Capcoms best franchise - ONIMUSHA - An appreciation thread

Not sure about best Capcom franchise, but I think we can all agree that this series would be great on a PS2 downloadable service (whenever that is going to come). Does anyone know if the Onimusha on steam is any good?

I gotta go at it like this.

1 was a classic game period. The story was very engaging and with the action to back it up. Historic characters with a horror spin and it just seemed to work right.

2 wasn't the best game but Jubei is just my favorite protagonist in the series. The friendship part was just weird but it was nothing more than a weird plot device that sort of worked.

The time travel stuff in 3 had me WTF'in the whole way through. But Jean Reno makes everything better. The only thing I remember is that I had a bet with my brother to 100% the game in a weekend. I did it and enjoyed the gameplay but the story wasn't as good as 1 or 2 was.

I haven't played Dawn of Dreams or Blade Warriors so I won't comment. Dawn of Dreams is on my backlog and one day I'll get through it and that all I've heard about Blade Warriors hasn't been good so who knows if I'll ever play it.

Onimusha is a great series and I'm hoping that Dawn of Dreams isn't the end of the series and Capcom revisits the series in the near future.

I'm here to hate on Onimusha 4. hateeee. Anyway, Onimusha 1 and 2 are superb games, 3 is pretty good too. Great series. Needs a revival (in the spirit of the earlier games, fuck Dawn of Dreams. Fuck it till it dies.)

Hmm. This thread reminded me of my intention to pick up Onimusha Essentials. Saw it cheap-ish not so long ago. Will definitely check the games out.

The problem with the Onimusha series as it stands is that they've moved into a less interesting period of history now that the Sengoku period has been finished with. I think the best possible approach to a new game would be a prequel at this point, seeing as the whole Ieyasu/Hideyori thing isn't really an option at this point imo. Maybe a prequel starring Hattori Hanzo (who was nicknamed Oni-Hanzo, in fact) (he is not the Kill Bill dude) could be interesting.

A prequel would serve as a better opportunity for a reboot than Shin Onimusha was, since Shin Onimusha pretty much wrapped up the more unstable historical portion of Japanese history that the Oni/Genma stuff tends to get tied up in with the games - there's nowhere really interesting to go in the timeline past that point. A reboot would also mean being able to return to the superior Onimusha 3 combat and hopefully returning to the more magical/natural aesthetic of the first two games (as opposed to the heavily mechanical aesthetic of 3/4).

Onimusha 2 was a masterpiece. It's still the only capable samurai game I've ever played (hoping WotS3 will be at least decent).

And I should have played Oni3 because I love Jean Reno, but it looked silly. And I had sold my PS2 by then.

I really especially loved Onimusha 2. Oni 1 for the badass music (I still remember it so clearly!) and 2 for the excellent characters. 3 was just a nonstop thrill ride for me, but 1 and 2 both have their moments to keep me grounded.

Jubei sure was an ugly little guy. Gogandantess = awesome!

Brobzoid :lol :lol :lol

I bough my PS2 because of the first Onimusha...

Interesting note, the ability to juggle enemies in DMC was the result of a bug in Onimusha that one of the developers though looked cool.

A buddy of mine lent me a heap of PS2 games and I remember putting Onimusha 2 in and trying it and finding the dpad controls utterly horrible, I thought what a ghastly game, played about 30 minutes and ignored it after that.

6 months later I saw some post on a forum and I was bored and it said to try some Onimusha game I've never heard of....
So I go through this pile and lo and behold this Onimusha game is that one I'd tried before, so I put it in again and gave it a better chance and I loved it - Onimusha 2 was awesome and I just can't put my finger on why.
I've always been a button masher, with no skill at all but I'm pretty sure I actually figured out a few good moves with that game and overall really enjoyed it, I actually felt skilled in the combat.
I haven't played any others, due to lack of time :( but I'd gladly pick up a new PS3 one if they made it.

Oh I did try the 3'rd one I think and I noticed they'd switched to analog controls, I'm shocked to say those awful awful Onimusha 2 controls rubbed off on me after a while and I actually disliked the analog for movement - never thought I'd say that!

Good times.
JUBEI READY....

Real talk though, I remember buying a copy of the official playstation 2 magazine that had part of a walk-through of Onimusha: Warlords in it and I read that shit like it was a short story. When I finally got a PS2 Onimusha was the first game I bought. It felt like Resident evil without the horrible controls and combat (which is sorta how it was made if I remember correctly). All of the enemies were really iconic, especially the standard warrior zombies, but especially the tall skinny samurai zombies. The bosses were all cool as fuck too. The art design was just really fucking good, that edo looking period of Japanese architecture and clothing/armor is pretty awesome, but the wear and tear on everything made it look a million times better. And who the hell doesn't love that creepy upside down baby-man?

I never got around to finishing the bonus game though, what was it that you got out of that? unlimited arrows or magic or something?

Onimusha Warlords was the first good game I played on my PS2 so long ago. Great storyline and I loved upgrading all my weapons. Before Onimusha all I use to play was TTT and PS1 games.

Just got Genma Onimusha for cheap, will be my first contact with the series and really looking forward to it. I hope there are no problems playing it on 360.

No love for the departed Yusaku Matsuda as Jubei in 2? He was the Japanese John Cusack!
Check out The Family Game or Black Rain, the dude looks exactly like John Cusack.

What's that stupid Mega Man crap doing in this thread?

NOBUUNAGAAAAaa

I was instantly reminded of Sengoku Basara when you said his name. I always thought Onimusha was kinda cool, though I never played the games. So hopefully there is a Onimusha 5 and I can play it.

Is God's Beard saying those game warrant sequels, moreso than Onimusha?
If so I agree but that's only caused I played them.

I like the Issen feature. It feels rewarding to execute an instant death move by getting the timing right
Yeah, the Onimusha battle system (for the real Onimusha games, where there are charge moves and where you don't spend the entire game chaining magic Issens) actually has a fair amount of depth that isn't readily apparent. 2 is probably the most casually fun as far as that's concerned (and, apart from the lack of Onimusha 3's vast improvements to the bow/gun controls, has the best fighting in the series - more varied charge attacks, the up + learnable down + square attacks, being able to thrust enemies up into the air) because they're ridiculously goddamn hard to pull off in 1 and 3.

The Onimusha trilogy was great. At times cheesy...

Samonuske: Even if I must die.......................................(mouth still moving)..................................I WILL DESTROY YOU!!!

But great enjoyable fun. Fantastic gameplay. Love the reoccuring enimies and enviroments throughout the series that change and comeback. Inayamba(sp?) Castle from Oni1 is in the same league as the resident evil mansion and police station, great locale.

Also love the demon relm, the bloody palace like side missions that lead to the ultimate itmes and ect. So good and a great challange. EXCEPT for Dawn of Dreams! It takes like 5-6 hours to go through with NO save points. THAT IS REDICULOUS! Plus you have to do it with ALL the characters just to get a minor weapon upgrade and a good item. FUCK that Shit.

Most fun I had was when i beat the whole series with Normal Sword only, No itmes, No upgrades and No Continues, Extreme Difficulty, Critical Kills only mode. So fun.

I don't know if I would go so far as to call them Capcom's best but I definitely enjoyed Onimusha 1 - 3 with the second one being the best, in my opinion. I loved the intro with the introduction to the sub characters. Awesome! I haven't played Dawn of Dreams.

come on seiken, marvel vs. capcom is pretty good.
Aye, to be honest it's hard to say what their best franchise is. I love MvC, SF, and so many games (first sentence of this thread) but somehow when I listen to the Onimusha OST, that's the soundtrack that sticks out the most. It's always the music that's convincing me :lol

I would love it if Capcom would rehire Bear McCreary to score Onimusha 5. Lord knows he loves Japanese instrumentation already. Also Onimusha 2 has the best soundtrack in the series imo (although 1 is nicely atmospheric) - 3 and 4 got much too goofy in that department.

i was going to hate on this thread when it came up but then i realized that i've never played an onimusha game aside from a few minutes in Genma Onimusha, which i don't really remember particularly liking. i love capcom games, they're one of my favorite developers ever, but i don't like devil may cry outside of the first one. keeping that in mind, is onimusha for me? :lol

Well it seems as if you don't remember much of your last Onimusha game. I'd really recommend buying the Essential edition :) It's cheap and it's... essential!

Guildernstern the best minion of the final boss in gaming ever?
Guildernstern was all talk no action, seriously. Major let down in Oni 3 :(

O...oni spirits... pot breaking mini game.. oh god no

great just threw up blood all over my keyboard.

Oni Spirits. Oh. My. God. I tried so very hard to finish this, but never could. Oni Spirits. uuuuuugh.

Just wanted to share. Great games.

The only one I actually played was 3 and thought it was a waste of the $15 I paid for it. The production values and the characters were pretty cool but the hack'n'slash was pretty weak coupled with the annoying fairy thing and tank controls.

Yeah, my most frustrating moment in the whole Onimusha franchise. God it was so not worth it.

all onimusha's were amazing except the stupid fighting game

hail to one of the best franchise in the last generation :D

The Let's Play on Something Awful kept commenting on how Guildernstern was so obviously having the time of his life onscreen.

And how the whole plot of Oni 3 boiled down to Guildernstern accidentally zapping himself to France and saying, 'Well, as long as I'm here...'

Oni 1-3 are really great, especially 2 and 3 in their own ways. I really just....Hate Dawn of Dreams. I really hated playing it :lol .
