I'd love to, but there's just too much I'm playing at the minute and have arriving for the rest of the month to make time for Oni!
Pish, the game's beatable in like five hours if you know what you're doing.

That's fine! I wouldn't want anyone to rush through any Oni-games so she should beat all the other games first and then start Oni :)!

Always wanted to play this series. I bought 2 and 3 at one point but wanted to get the first one as well.

This goes on the huge-ass list of "If I ever again have a PS2 and too much free time..."

For me, the 2nd was the best one. Everything was awesome and I loved the part where you need to exchange items with other characters.

Didn't play the 4th too much, but I just hate the main character. C'mon, a blond horned demon? Fuck off.

Yeah but trying to find 5 hours in between Pro Evo, Tekken 6, Bayonetta, MW2, S&P 2 and Forza 3 is a liiiiitle difficult :p

Games like this are the reason Capcom was so much better last gen than this gen. I miss games like:

Onimusha
God Hand
Viewtiful Joe
Killer 7
P.N 03 (Yes it kicks ass)
Breath of Fire 5
Maximo
Haunting Ground
Clock Tower 3
REmake

Capcom produced some awesome shit last gen. Way better than what they do currently.

Does anybody feel like Capcom lost their "Magic" since the Clover team left?

I feel pretty much the same way although it wasn't Clover leaving that caused this. Management shifted from Shinji Mikami to Keiji Inafune. To Inafune's credit, he's made Capcom much more successful then Mikami did as head of the development teams but on the other hand, outside of DMC4, I haven't much liked the other stuff Capcom has given us. This is actually the first gen since the Genesis where the majority of titles I own haven't been made by Capcom.

Onimusha is the best Capcom franchise and this generation sorely needs Oni 5. Onimusha Dawn of Dreams is also the best game in the series. Beautiful visuals, full 3d camera, ridiculous amounts of stuff to collect and upgrade.

I somewhat recently got a copy of Genma Onimusha... wow. It's hard to believe how much the minor changes they made affect the way the game plays. It's way, WAY harder (but I like that).

I'm also in the middle of Onimusha 2, which is pretty cool. I keep holding off on buying Onimusha 3 and Dawn of Dreams because really, am I ever going to have trouble finding a copy of either?

I just got back from Paris a few days ago, so I popped in Onimusha 3 and beat it fresh in ten hours. Awesome combat system and 3D visuals, and it was nice contrasting the game's locale with the real locale. :lol The only thing that was even more awkward than I remember was the dialogue. I can't believe Jacques and Leon have the same VA. Sometimes they do sound the same.

So today I bought the Japanese version of Shin Onimusha Dawn of Dreams, since it's less than $20 new, can be played in English and doesn't have that stupid broken difficulty mode the U.S. version had. I still think Dawn of Dreams is quite better than the trilogy, but this series truly shines as a whole. Each entry is quite unique in its own way, that it's obvious everyone will have a different favorite.

I just came back from a Onimusha (1) session and damn, it's still a very good game... beat it in under 3 hours though :( Didn't get the
Bishamon Sword
though, I can't handle
Dark Realm
for shit :lol

I think I'm going to play Onimusha 2 soon, IIRC it's a lot longer than the original, am I right?

Yep, it's substantially longer. If you're having a lot of trouble with the dark realm in Onimusha 1:

-remember to block, the game doesn't really force you or teach you to rely on blocking until the Dark Realm and/or the second-to-last boss fight
-cheese it by cycling through your weapons constantly and using magic attacks as much as possible, you'll get more magic if all of your weapons are empty

Onimusha 2 is longer, and the campaign is LOADS of fun; it's only screwed up by a gift-giving minigame that essentially means that on any given playthrough you only get to experience about 90% of the game because at least one sidequest will be cut off from you. And yes, it's a good deal longer; it's probably the most flawed of the first three games, but is still my favorite (Onimusha 3 edges it out when it comes to the combat, R1+X for the bow or gun is perfect, although I prefer the charged moves and the square + up + down moves in Onimusha 2).

Onimusha 3 is a pretty damn good game, but you pretty much have to ignore the absurdly dumb story and some of the gimmicky situations that you're put in.

Dawn of Dreams... would be a much better game if it had the boss HP bars that Shin Onimusha had and if it also hadn't crippled the amount of souls you get from enemies compared to the JPN release. The character-switching and backtracking puzzles are pretty fun, and I'll admit that the incredibly easy magic->chain issen is a guilty pleasure of mine, but all in all the RPG elements overwhelm what ought to be a solid series, the Dark Realm is WAY too long and hard (seriously it takes about four to five hours straight to beat the damn thing), and the combat isn't nearly as solid as it was in Onimusha 2 and 3. Not to mention that the music isn't NEARLY as good as it was in the first three games. I love the character-switching and the variety in combat styles of Shin Onimusha, but I'm hoping Onimusha 5 is something of a return to form.

Thanks for bumping! I can officially say that I have MASTERED all issens now. Practiced a lot and I can pretty much issen the shit out of everything now.

Onimusha 2 is king.

Onimusha 2 has the easiest issens in the series by far (not counting the cheap-ass magic issens in Dawn of Dreams), but IMO that's sort of a good thing because it makes them a genuinely viable option to learn as you play. They're too fucking hard in 1 and 3 to be a particularly reliable option in combat for anyone but the crazy folks who figured out how to use Royal Guard to block every single move in DMC3.

Bosses do have health bars in the American release.

I prefer the music in 4. It's a nice balance of orchestral for the cutscenes and techno for action.

Fuuuuuuuuu thread got bumped so i was like OMG did i miss onimusha announcement @ captivate?

Um yeah, but in the American release for some reason Capcom made it so that bosses have 10 times as much HP as they did in the Japanese release.

So why hasn't this gotten a current gen adaptation yet.
Well, IIRC each game in the series made less money than the one prior to it. I don't think it's DEAD, but Shin Onimusha was a pretty clear attempt at changing course and lowering the budget somewhat, and it's fairly likely that Capcom would like to make an Onimusha game but needs to figure out how to make sure they'll make money with it.

Going multiplatform is the first thing they would do. Then they could go back to the series roots and make it strictly survival horror again. I personally wouldn't want to see that. Also there's the option to add in coop but I wouldn't want to see that either.

Their roots were never strictly in the survival horror genre. More like 10%, the rest was action.

Yeah, if anything it was an action/adventure game that was made more horrific later in development when they realized how popular Resident Evil was.

I don't care what anyone says, Dawn of Dreams was easily my favorite in the series. It completely surprised me. I spent a good 50+ in the damn thing, most of which in that secret arena place getting special weapons. I fucking loved Soki and all the character and the ending made me cry.

loved onimusha 1 and 2 (though, the guy from oni 2 was one ugly motherf)

3 was terrible,4 was the best in the series imo,the amount of content was just insane (only the ending sucked,i wanted the girl, dammit >_>)

Yusaku Matsuda doesn't like you either! :lol

You people are crazy. Dawn of Dreams had some good aspects to it, but it's definitely less polished than other games in the series and has some serious balance issues.

i too only played the first onimusha. it is definitely in my top 5 ps2 games. it was the first ps2 game that really impressed me graphically. i have not played it since it launched. i will not put it in because i know seeing it now will eliminate the wow factor that i remember to this day.

Onimusha 3: Demon Siege story

The year is 1582, Takeshi Kaneshiro is finally back! No more Yubei baby. There's a big samurai war going on in Japan (once again). Samanosuke manages to catch up with Nobunaga and destroys an odd looking machine that's holding up the Genma army. Destroying the machine made Samanosuke and all the demons teleport to Paris 2004. What the fuck? The demons starts attacking Paris and this is where we get introduced to Jacques Blanc (Jean Reno). While Samanosuke transfers to Paris, Jacques gets ported to Japan where the war was. Both heroes realizes that they need to get to their own time, but how? HOW??? Well... go buy the fucking game, that's how!
!!!

How have I never played this game?!

I think Onimusha 1 and 2 impressed upon Capcom the fact that prerendered backgrounds could still work in the PS2 era, which is likely a lot of what led to the REMake and Resident Evil 0... on the other hand, they abandoned prerendered backgrounds for Onimusha 3, so maybe not.
