Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3/360) Comparison Thread

Y2Kev

TLG Fan Caretaker Est. 2009
Hello all.

In this thread, we will compare the PS3 and 360 versions of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow with:

-published reviews
-DF comparisons
-personal anecdotes*

I'm going to caveat the last one. If you're not typically sensitive or aware of technical issues, please do not comment. And, above all, do not say you do not care. Do not post if you do not care. You will be banned for thread shitting.

Do not start a fanboy war.

Hopefully this one will remain civil. And no, I'm not going to make any outrageous claims about MLAA this time :lol

hmmm, i really want this game but i just ordered Demon's Souls the other day.

Will wait for a price drop.

Is the difference in colour vibrancy very noticeable? OPs pic in the other thread made it look like the PS3 version was a black and white game compared to the 360 version, and I was planning to eventually get the PS3 version :|

There's a reason the OP was banned.

It was clearly a joke....

To just shuttle my comment from the last thread:

I just want to wait for the Digital Foundry comparison to see how the framerate is in the final version. If it really is 24fps on a consistent basis, no buy. People say the game looks amazing, but in my opinion, framerate is a huge part of how amazing something looks, and it also impacts my enjoyment.

Will wait.

I'm getting the PS3 version simply because I have SOTN from the PSone classics.

Dumb? Yes. OCD? Of course.

Edit: I do have a question though. I'm not tech savvy with the systems, so excuse me but why do most games have better lighting/colors on the 360?

I think the colors are the same. The problem is the image/video capture method. When they design these machines, they need to match a color spec. Either way, it is nothing you cannot fix with your display settings.

I am interested in this game. If the 360 version is horrible. I will wait until I adquire a PS3 after the gen is over.

I'm like that too. I'm trying to figure out how to buy Portal 2 on PS3.

I believe it's a gamma thing typically, right?

Not dumb, just a preference. I do stuff like that all the time. If I play a franchise primarily on one console, if future installments are multiplat I usually go for the "home console" kind of thing. Like Resident Evil and GTA, I get those on Playstation consoles. Just a... thing, dumb or not, it's what I do.

Yeah, but either way, those are minimal differences. I have 3 360's in my place (I live with my brother), and each one is connected to different displays. The difference in colors, sharpness, and contrast is astounding. I am more concerned about frame rate and resolution. Even screen tearing can be avoided under certain display conditions.

Ah that's good I'm not the only one =P I was the same with both GTA and Resident Evil as well, whereas if I were to buy Dead Rising 2 or EDF Insect Armageddon- they'd get thrown on the 360 shelf.

Ah okay, I do find myself wanting to play my PS3 on the plasma in the living room than my smaller LCD.

I typically stick to purchases on the 360 platform, since I've had that one longer. Now that I have a PS3, I will pick 360 usually, but if it's particularly better on the PS3, I'll go with that copy.

Joke? My understanding was Portal 2 was not only announced for PS3, but supposed to be a version with some platform-specific perquisites.

I think he is referring to having Portal and Still Alive on the 360 but wanting it on PS3 now, and that'd break his collection OCD.

I just wanted to include http://www.lensoftruth.com/ They do a great job of comparing cross platform games and are very honest and unbiased. Just the facts. I'd expect a Castlevania comparison very soon.

Going through the demo again right now. When is the xbox demo out? I'll probably download it too just to do my home personal comparison.

I disagree. I think they don't have a clue. Digital Foundry and Beyond3D are usually the best places to check for these things, in my opinion.

October 5th. The day the game ships out. :/

Which reminds me, I should probably download both the demos and try this. I know close to nothing about it. Hoping for a nice surprise.

Framerate is always a high concern for me. Stable 30 fps with no dips under at least. One of the (several) reasons why I didn't like the Enslaved demo was because of the FPS. From what I've seen of Castlevania I will buy it and play it no matter what the scores. If it has poor fps that would be a shame.

2 DVDs on Xbox360 vs 1 Bluray is one benefit for the PS3 version. We'll see soon enough the comparisons I guess.

not if seeing a 'change disc' screen sends a rush of nostalgia-related endorphins to your brain and triggers an involuntary erection

yeah... and doesn't lens of "truth" use component cables instead of HDMIs for comparisons?

Is it that much of a deal breaker? Just wondering.

Abso-fucking-lutely.

It's bad enough games seemingly can't go beyond 30fps 9/10 times on consoles, but at least that is playable.

At 24fps, for me, it's something that's going to be a constant source of frustration. The terrible framerate almost ruined Shadow of the Colossus for me. Framerate is hugely important to games and anything sub-30 is not acceptable, no.

It's one thing to have OCCASIONAL drops, but if it's consistent, it's not something I'm going to support.

They do that, but Digital Foundry seems teh biased imo. Best to play both for yourself via demo and make the decision based on that, I mean if you have both consoles, it shouldn't be a problem. IF you don't, why would you care.

Have you tried the demo Ami? It's an unfinished build and the framerate never once hurt the gameplay and I've played through it like three times on the hardest difficulty. Just saying, try it for yourself. It didn't ever seem to drop during gameplay on the PS3 demo. It did during a few cutscenes on occasion.

Ok. Just asking because a lot of game seem to struggle to keep 30 FPS locked. It's horrible but I can still deal with it.

The framerate in the PS3 demo doesn't affect the gameplay one bit. It's really been blown out of proportion. This isn't Shadow of the Colossus.

currently playing the 360 version and the game is just damn beautiful. it also runs very smoothly, which is even more amazing once you witness the sheer detail and technical effects utilized throughout (subtle HDR, dynamic everything). i haven't had a chance to play the final PS3 version, although i did play the demo like many others. i'm a few hours in so far and i can say that i have not seen any framerate issues whatsoever, and i generally have a good eye for this sort of thing.

game's camera moves slowly throughout the game, panning up and down and zooming, adding a very cinematic quality to the game. also adds a non-intrusive 'shaky' cam effect here and there, as though the viewer is observing a movie.

i cannot give this game enough praise. buy on either console, as they're virtually identical.

parrying an attack was a pain in the demo because of the shit framerate. especially in the second part when you're knocked off your horse.

I disagree with your disagreement. All of their Head2Heads that I have personally looked at and read have been spot on.

They capture with HDMI and do their JustinTV feeds via component. It's all broken down here.

Was it the framerate or your skills? Most folks didn't have an issue.

I've played it just today, and yes, it seemed unacceptably bad.

I will wait for the Digital Foundry comparison to see if it remains as awful for the final product before my decision.

Side Note: It's not just the framerate turning me off - the combat seemed really shallow (like, way more shallow than GoW shallow) and the horse thing was just unspeakably bad.

Zeal, have you watched Gamespot's video review? At 5:45 they discuss frame rate, and show footage of the 360 version hiccuping during combat and even freezing for a moment when a larger enemy goes down (not the intentional "impact pauses", either). Please let us know if you encounter anything like that.

I stand corrected. At the end of most recent head2head it says it was captured via component. I still stand by the fact that they do a good job.

Amir0x said:

Fair enough then. I didn't get that at all while playing it so I suppose I should feel fortunate that your instincts are clearly vastly superior to mine :lol

The horse part does suck, but fortunately sequences like that are probably few and far between.

Yeah, I had your complaints at first. However, the combat really does start to open up later on, which was very surprising to me. So don't knock it for the combat, because it does get much much better than the shit the demo throws at you.

Im usually pretty bad at telling if something has a bad framerate, hell I thought Uncharted 2 was at 60 :lol

I usually go PS3 unless the 360 is the lead platform since the PS3 has less chances of dying on me, so I guess I'll wait 'till theres some sort of conclusion.

k, i just watched the review and noticed what you're talking about. the developer made a comment on his Twitter that the review copies of the 360 version were not optimized and that the final retail version of the game would not feature such framerate hipcups.

now i normally don't pay much attention to claims like this, as i consider them PR speak, but i think this is the once exception where the developer wasn't bullshitting. if i do see anything like this, i'll be sure to report it, but so far the game has been consistently smooth, even in large battles.

i have, however, encountered one bizarre clipping bug where my character got stuck in a tree and was in a perpetual sort of falling animation (just hanging there in the sky, couldn't attack, move, etc.) although i was able to reload my save to correct it.

gonna continue to play and see how it goes.
