Castlevania Portrait Of Ruin (DS) thread

Regarding the tension factor, I think Zelda II for one proved, though some will argue that it did a little too well, that with intense enemy battles, RPG elements needn't necessarily water down a 2d side-scrolling action-adventuring experience. The stakes aren't that high too often in the Metroidvanias.

does anyone have a long sword to sell me? Jeez, i sold mine and now I need it for something and I can't find another one. If anyone has one, let me know. Thank god for the shop channel here.

Not that fun :(

I had more fun with DoS. Too many of the same enemies and bosstypes. Tag team is neat but doesn't add too much.
The sublevels have a new look, but the gameplay is identical.
I'm 4 hours in. Maybe I'm just CV'd out. Co-op probably won't extend the game much for me, I'm not a big fan of boss rush.
Could you please tell me what was different in the gameplay between DoS's areas?

Because I didn't see any. All I saw were cliche areas were you had to soulgrind or else you would be stuck with shit weapons. No fun in exploration since you couldn't find any cool or rare weapons.

And don't get me started on the bosses. SOTN enemies and retreads from Aria. Wow. Such variety. PoR's got a entire new cast of bosses except one and the most new enemies out of any Castleroids.

So there. I feel that if you don't like PoR, then you're probably just tired of the formula. Because it can't get any better than this.

Got my copy from GS (really fast considering I just did standard shipping). Don't know when I'll get to the game, but DAMN this is one really nice preorder bonus.

got my pre-rder copy, but my GS ran out of the pre=order bonus stuff. :( They said that they didn't get enough of them to fullfill the pre-order, so it was first-come, first serve basis. Funny thing is, I didn't even get an message left on my answering machine yesterday, nor today.

I mean, wtf. :( They said they'll give me a call when they get more (if they get more, that is) - but it's very unlikely I'll get the bonus. I'm pretty pissed right now... :(

Just go in there, yo-yo's blazing, and take out some magazine racks sukeban deka style.

I had the same situation. Funny thing is that they hadn't opened all boxes when i arrived yesterday. So when a friend calls today, a guy tells him that they gave them away, even though we were there first and the knob told us to come friday.

**** man sorry. I'd be pissed off too. I missed out on the MGPO extras because I was lazy and now I'm pissed about that. Oh well. Lesson learned.

****ING BULLSHIT

i get my gamestop.com preorder, and it's just an empty padded envelope that's clearly never been sealed. i call gamestop.com, and they can't send me another copy of the preorder bonus, so they're just giving me a refund. can't get the book and the cd now -- none of the local stores have any extras, and they're going for $50 without the game on ebay. i don't even want the game anymore.
that's karma! :P

seriously tho, that sucks

Got my game and preorder today. Great game so far (cleared the first painting) but I've found an infinite money glitch already!! :lol

Goddamn that is ****ing bullshit! Mine got sent in a padded envelope that looked like it had been steam rolled and my bonus goods were crushed. Based off your experience and mine I'm never ordering from them again.

Mine came in good shape, but yeah it was in a padded envelope. When did they switch to those? I always used to get stuff in boxes from them.

Mine came today! :D I put 2 hours into it so far and I'm liking it quite abit. I tried the co-op but got killed on the first boss. The preorder bonuses are quite nice as well. It's nice to have a little game holder just for the 2 Castlevania games.

Picked it up. Looks fantastic. Anime art make me want to die. More later.

Agreed. Whart happened to the beautiful art direction used in Symphony and GBA castlevanias? They've butchered this series in the art department. Sad.

Mine got crushed to shit too... :/
No more orders from them for me.

Update: This painting is a multilayer quantum-space barrier. There's no way we can destroy it.

Dialogue making me want to die also.

More later, if I'm still alive.

Man,
Death
is slapping me around all over the place. I know I had to have gotten really close to beating him a couple of times, I've had some long battles. Really cool battle though.

^ Victrix, just ignore the art and the cheese and focus instead on the gameplay, music and boss battles. It'll ease the pain.

I have to say so far (four paintings done) that the backgrounds simply lack the detail found in Dawn of Sorrow. I don't know if it was a necessary sacrifice due to the game's size, but it's a sore spot for me. Not a huge deal, but I can't help but notice.

I think the story and dialogue so far are a bit better than in previous installments; I'm particularly enjoying the brief amount of banter between Jonathan and Charlotte.

BWAHAHAHAHA. The game's economy is so mf'ing broken. I'm level 10, have only beaten the first boss, and I've already managed to buy at least 1 of every item in the store, including Record5 (Simon's Theme), that $200,000 Mastery Ring, and the $300,000 Holy Claymore!

Glitch:
1) Complete a quest in which Wind rewards you with a salable item (preferably one worth money).
2) Save at Vincent's shop, one room away from Wind's chamber.
3) Approach Wind, and hit up to initiate conversation.
4) Hit A to enter Quests menu.
5) Hit A to select completed quest.
6) Hit A to clear "This weapon's all yours now" text.
7) When it says "<Reward> received" hit START to insta-crash out of the Quest menu.
*) This will result in you getting the reward, but the Quest NOT being flagged as cleared.
*) Do NOT hit any button other than Start, otherwise you will clear the quest along with accepting the item.
8) Repeat until you have 9 of the reward item. Take it one screen over and sell to Vincent.
9) Repeat these steps to accrue an infinite amount of money.

Dialogue is much better, the story isn't painful.

I think it's because so far, none of the music is really doing it for me, so I'm not as engaged. The first area of DoS had kickass music.

Never really had a problem with the weapons and the souls never gave me much of a problem. Never grinded either.

No fun in exploration since you couldn't find any cool or rare weapons.

Not finding any rare ones here either.
I do like the whip but they're pretty underpowered.

And don't get me started on the bosses. SOTN enemies and retreads from Aria. Wow. Such variety. PoR's got a entire new cast of bosses except one and the most new enemies out of any Castleroids.

None stand out though.

Who knows, maybe my opinion will change by the end... or maybe I am tired of the formula. Obviously I'm in the minority here. I guess we'll see when I finish it and report back.

Hahaha, now I have a Holy Claymore and TWO Mastery Rings (they stack, for quadruple the SP gain per kill!)

What is Rate?

And how does the shop (multiplayer) work? If I put something up, do I need to connect to sell it? Does it vanish from my inventory instantly? What da deal?

this game is mfing hard compared to dawn of sorrow.. only past the sands painting.. and i get so lost in those paintings without full maps!! gargh lol

Though the egyptian chick was easy... 1000 blades twice.. dead beat her in 10 secs lol

The game is decidedly tougher than the past few, at least at times.

And OMG, actual platforming!

I'm loving the subweapons and their mastery so far. 4x SP gain is insane. I've fought 2 bosses and I've already mastered 4 subweapons! :lol

I love how many of the classic baddies have redrawn sprites (or rerendered models)!

My friend code: 2191 2921 8445

Added Mejilan and brandonh83

Just finished the first painting, and so far Im definitely liking this game so far. While im not a huge fan of the character designs, it's still a great Castlevania game.

I lucked out and found the floating eye headpiece almost immediately - which lets you see any breakable walls. It sells from my store for 40k, so if anyone wants it, lemme know and I'll post when I'm around.

edit: Nation of Fools is an awesome level

edit: bahahahaha, Clown Shirt - A cheerful-yet-horrifying clown shirt.

Hey, let me get in this. I added mejilan, purge and brandonh83.

my friend code is 1890 6443 8299. Hopefully we can get some good co-op/boss rush games going.

3 and a half hours in so far.. loving the game, not a huge Charlotte fan yet though. The game feels like it's just going too quickly, but then again I suppose they all get beaten in 7 hours or less the first play through.. I usually don't put in this much time in one day, much less day 1 lol.

Valtox 4639 4230 6281
Mejilan I added your fc.
This topic wants your friend codes. I'd like to try co-op friend matches.
I use the girl with a summon skeleton ability, but I can't beat the 4th boss, the arm, please join the ownage.:)

I'm not very impressed either.

The game is fun, but it feels very disjointed and rushed. The animation, the music, the levels, the bosses...none of them really seem to flow. The cut-and-paste environments are getting really, really old as well.

I'm really disappointed, and no, I'm not burnt out on the formula. If I was burnt out, I wouldn't be going back through Dawn of Sorrow and Symphony of the Night.

Is it just me or are there way too many teleports in this game? I mean, it's convenient and all, but more often and not I find myself just walking where I need to go, that way I get some experience in the process too.

Not to say there aren't a lot of teleports but walking too much in CV means levelling up too much imo

to eliminate backtracking.

Well, I've heard you can
put a level cap on yourself in the hard mode

I preordered this game months ago, it's Friday and I still haven't gotten a call from Gamestop... wtf.
I didn't receive a call from my local GS either, but I called them on the day of release to make sure they had put aside my copy & bonus.

I have this same feeling too. At first i thought i was castlevaniaed out but i dont think thats it. The level design with the castle seems to be a step backwards, it just feels too linear to me compared to Dawn of Sorrow. I'm still enjoying it, but not as much as i would like to.

3 hrs+ in btw.

Yes! Got my call from EBGames (Canada) two days ago, but the guy talking to me seemed confused about the pre-order bonus. Took yesterday to call around local EBs to see if they got any extras, no luck.

So I go in today (told on a tip that they might get more shipped), I ask the guy if he got any, and said to check back later, or during the week. He goes to check the back room, and YES! got a pre-order bonus for me!

Well this makes things much sweeter, and I will start playing the game once my gf gives me back my DS.

When I get my friend code, I'll be sure to share it.

this is easily the best igavania ever, no lame backtracking, no soul grinding, awesome boss fights, some pretty awesome levels. Nation of Fools was awesome.

loving it.
