Castlevania Portrait Of Ruin (DS) thread

I was a bit disappointed in the level design at first, but the storyline is really kicking in now and the gameplay is great with all the different skills and weapons. The design of the later levels is getting better and there's a ton of action.

The bosses are all flat out awesome. Makes me feel smart when I figure out the easy way how to beat them.

That'd be masochism, is it even possible? I mean.. one hit and you're dead.

There are going to be a couple of bosses like that. lol. I'm doing the same once I finish.

Richter is pissing me off. I'm suprised he hasn't busted out any item crashes yet.

Is it just me, or does using
1,000 Blades
against bosses feel wrong? It does like 25 damage + a hit. You use it like three times and the bosses are practically done for. LOL

the fight against
Loretta
was awesome

and the story is *gasp* actually pretty good for a castlevania game.

Did Capcom pay for an upgrade to the DS's sound chipset, or are the PoR tracks on the bonus CD recorded at CD quality and possibly with real instruments?

I'm not sure what you're saying... is POR's sound quality really high or is the CD's sound quality really high?

The PoR tracks on the CD. Everything on the CD is the original game audio except the PoR tracks, which seem to use real instrumentation.

Edit: The sound chipset thing was just wishful thinking. God the DS sounds terrible. Nintendo used to care about music :(

the music is really good, best castlevania OST since SOTN.

lots of memorable tunes already.

Where do you go after you have the
toad transform
ability?

you take the upper right exit out of the tower with the moving platform (the ones going up on the right and down on the left). keep going straight and eventually you'll reach a room that you can only get through while a toad. It's like the clockwork area.

Thanks. :) I remembered several spots like that, I just didn't remember where I saw them.

Theres actually one in the sand stage as well. It has a nice little bonus. thought you might want to know. :)

Don't skip that Sandy Grave spot. Or else you'll ''finish'' the game at the half-way part.

I've beaten that level... but I don't know what it has to do with beating the game early.

do any of you guys have any
nun's clothing or a long sword
? I'm still looking for them. :lol

damnit,
these sister are killing me. I'm trying to take them down in that "special" way, but I never have enough time.
Anyone have any advice?

Edit* I got it, forget it. The boss that is. I still need the parts.

Someone hasn't played FFIII DS then.

btw I dont see how the level design is so shitty in this game... I find it even better than SOTN and utterly destroys DoS levels.

sure it's the usual no bottom less pits or floors filled with spikes from the IGAvanias. but Nation of Fools, the egyptcian level and Forest of Doom are some of the most awesome levels I played in Castlevania since Rondo and Castlevania IV. unless the latter levels are very crappy the level design here is pretty damn good.

I do kinda wish that the paitings emulated more old school castlevanias levels with bottomeless pits lots of traps and stuff. the paintings is a great idea to mix the two styles! IGA dropped the ball here should've been Main Castle=Metroidvania, Paintings=old school castlevania.

Yeah. I'm just glad to see SOME platforming come back. I was happy to see those old blocks from the
NES Castlevanias
:lol

the action is SO much better in this castlevania than it has been in a while.
about an hour in,
did anyone think the cleopatra boss was a bit of an ikaruga homage, with the switching back and forth between characters to dodge the boss' entrancing of jonathan? awesome stuff.

That kicked a lot of ass.

My first castlevania game and I am a bit lost. So hearts dont replenish your health but your magic? I am low on health and when I get a heart it helps boost my magic which is already slowly regenerating??? So I am stuck I guess as I used my potions?

does anyone know where
the ghoul king
is?

Ghoul King:

What you do is
find a spot where the Ghouls spawn for what seems like an endless amount... eventually a blue flamed version will appear and hustle his ass towards you. Take him out, quick.

buy food from that friar looking guy you met at the beginning. He should be in the room behind Wind.

Okay I'm an idiot. I thought I knew what you meant when I read it but now that I'm trying, I don't know where you mean. I know the place with the platforms going up and down, but what after that?

in that tower there is an exit towards the middle [along the height] on the right side. if you look at your map, on the right of the tower from top to bottom there are 3 exits on the right side. the topmost one is a warp room, the next one down is right under it, and its a save point. the next exit under those is the one you are looking for. its not directly under the save room though. you have to go a bit further down.

I hope that helps.

Right, it leads to the
Tower of Death. I went as far into the tower as I could and came to a dead end after fighting a Gaibon and Slogra.

I guess that's where I'm actually stuck. Not sure where to go.

edit: I'M SO RETARDED. I simply didn't see the little spot where you can keep going up. Wow I'm a loser. Thanks though. :)

Well
Death
just gave me a gentle love-tap.

hah
his move where the hands hold you in place and he slices the life out of you is awesome. Hes one of the bosses I don't mind losing to.

$5 more for special handling and of course they put it in a padded envelope instead of a box. Damn thing looks like they jumped on it.

He's sure... something. I'm just going to uh... go do some quests and come back later. Yep that's what I'll do.

By the way, how far am I?

I thought he was pretty dang challenging. I got so so close to beating him twice (I know this from the time I did finally beat him) so when you finally do it'll be sweet indeed.

I'd say you're roughly halfway, maybe a little farther?
