CD Projekt Red: 'Cyberpunk 2077 is far, far bigger than The Witcher 3'

Cyberpunk 2077, the next game from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, is the biggest title the studio has ever made.

The sci-fi-flavoured RPG was originally announced back in 2012, but the Polish outlet has remained quiet on specificities of the project since.

Now it has been revealed that the title will be ever grander in scale than the third and final entry in the developer’s sprawling fantasy series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

“Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before,” visual effects artist Jose Teixeira told MCV. “Far, far bigger.

“We're really stepping into the unknown in terms of complexity and size and problems we encounter.”

The Witcher 3 became the fastest-selling game in the UK during 2015 upon its release back in May, but was overtaken by the launch of fellow open-world title Batman Arkham Knight one month later.

Teixeira continued by saying that The Witcher 3’s scope had helped the studio to refine its open-world formula for Cyberpunk 2077.

"The Witcher helped Cyberpunk quite a bit, because the game got so big and so complex that it really taught us,” he explained. “We really didn't know what was going to happen.

“If anything, working on The Witcher 3 was a really good and often brutal learning experience. Cyberpunk is going to benefit greatly from it. I can almost guarantee it.

"I have a lot of things that I want to change and do better the next time around, and I can guarantee that almost everyone in that studio has something that they go 'I did this this time, next time I can do it differently, I can do it better'.”

Unsurprisingly, Teixeira refused to give any clues regarding a potential release window for the title.

“The name of the game is Cyberpunk 2077, and we usually say the release date is 2077,” he joked.

map size and game systems - sounds like they're aiming to go bigger on both fronts

Has CDPR hinted at what the gameplay will be like at all? I imagine third-person ARPG like Witcher, but who knows.

Good. I trust CDPR to make games for me to sink stupid amount of time into. No one else measures up.

Boggles the mind why they revealed this game when they did. Publishers/developers announcing a game too early is practically a disease at this point.

I am very interested to see what a modern take on cyberpunk is, given that the genre itself has (IMO) strong ties to the 80s and 90s, and hasn't seen much use in modern games.

As for bigger, I'm not sure what that'll end up meaning, but W3 is already so fucking big (in terms of content) that I don't know how they could possibly do that.

I have faith CDPR can deliver another impressive title. It will be interesting to finally see what this game looks like

God damn. Stop making 100+ hour games and just make an awesome focused story that doesn't have a million fetch quests. Give me one big city with loads to interact with like gtaiv size rather than going for a box to tick for your marketing push.

I hope they are referring to quest complexity rather than just the dimension of the game world.

when i think cyberpunk i dont think a large world map that i have to scroll endlessly through. I think incredibly dense urban cities with skyscrapers, neon, smokey stuff everywhere and it's never daytime.

Not necessary. TW3 is my favorite game so far this year, but it's a bit too big. For my tastes at least.

However, I think I get what they mean in that, by the nature of this being a very role-based game, there's simply more options available.

Either way, TW3 was one of the best open world games I've ever played, so I can't wait to see what they do with Cyberpunk.

Lol he was probably dead serious.

With the way AAA development has gone this gen something tells me we won't see this game this gen.

when i think cyberpunk i think vertically. high towers with a bazillion floors. not a large sprawling city. and yes, always night.

I'm not that hyped that the game is so absolutely massive. I'd rather have a more streamlined but polished experience. Although CDPR can actually deliver both, so here's hoping.

I don't get these jokes. CDPR don't take stupidly long to release their games. It's usually four years for them, which is just fine for the kind of games they make. The Witcher was 2007, The Witcher 2 was 2011, and The Witcher 3 was 2015. If anything they're likely to push CP2077 out by 2018 because of how much they've been growing as a studio.

Reading the title and first sentence of the post instantly filled me with joy and excitement.

Please not bigger, make it more concentrated and better.
Yep. Last thing I want is a map full of unending icons the game cajoles me into clearing.

Let's have tighter areas, better-written quests, more little secret areas to discover and multiple ways to approach scenarios.

I basically want Deus Ex.

I think if they were to ever go for a density over sheer size approach Cyberpunk would be a good place to do it. Not that I expect them to, as I think Witcher 3 set the blueprint they'll follow for the foreseeable future. But hey, every Witcher game is great, and Cyberpunk is an awesome IP, so I'm still super excited. I'll love every second of the game when I play it in 2025.
