Celebrities you once thought were nice and genuine, but really aren't

I really couldn't care less if a celebrity is nice or not, since I'm never going to know them personally.

Still, whenever I hear that so-and-so is an ass or whatever I have to wonder if it's actually the case, or if they're just a regular person and people hold celebrities to a higher standard of social interaction. I imagine it can get irritating being constantly bombarded by fans when all you wanna do is relax or keep to yourself.

If I were a celebrity, I don't think I'd be able to be nice to complete strangers who think they know me, who want to shake my hand or make a photograph when I just want to cross the street, buy something, have a dinner with my special other, etc. And when you're having a shitty day, you're really not interested in yet another interaction with a random stranger and you tell them off, you're immediately considered an inconsiderate asshole and that newsworthy fact is banded about on the internet immediately and it will stay there forever more.

I thought Adam Richman would be a cool, fun guy because of his persona on Man Vs Food. He turned out to be a right cock bag. Not only that disgusting Twitter affair, but I was told a story by some college-aged girls I was at a party with that he was crazily creepy when they met him in real life. The kind of guy that was all leery and didn't take obvious signals as signs he should back off or tone it down.

Edit: on a positive note, Junior Gong, Bob Marley's kid, is about the coolest person I ever met. Invited us (a bunch of guys) onto his tour bus, was nice and spoke to us and not down to us, partied in a really chill way. Even offered us a ride when he realized we couldn't handle the supreme pot he smokes (that shit was for real next level). He even remembered my friend a few years later by name. Really cool guy.

I've only ever met a few folks and mostly lesser know people.

The first mom from Fresh Prince of Bel Air Janet Hubert is SUPER nice. When I worked as an assistant manager for a Funcoland just after college, she was a semi regular with her son. Always friendly, always in a good mood.

Michelle Rodriguez came in 1 or twice too and was just a total bitch to all of the employees. There was a guy playing on the Nets too who would come in 1 a month and just drop like 500 - 1000 bucks on all the new games that came out. Seemed like a chilled nice dude, forget his name though.

In high school and college I pumped gas, and worked inside the convenience store that was right across the street from the development Bruce Driver lived in (hockey player). He was a giant bag of dicks. I don't think I ever saw the dude smile or say anything nice to anyone. A couple times when I was pumping gas late, and he came in I tried to just make small talk. Stuff where you're just sitting there and he's the only car and you say something like, "Nice night out tonight." Every time he'd turn look at me, and hold that look while slowly rolling his car windows up. Then he'd hold it for a second more once they were rolled up, and would then look away. His wife and kids are SUPER nice, happy, friendly people. He's a colossal dick though.

I met Jim Bruer after a show once, and he was really friendly and nice. Just seemed happy to get to meet fans and spend some time talking to them.

Ohh I also met the guy who played the Boss on the Geico Gecko commercials Brian Carney, really friendly, awesome guy. He's actually the son of Art Carney who played Ed Norton on The Honeymooners.

Robert Carlyle was an twat when his wife skipped the queue, was told to wait, she goes over to him then he comes over and starts giving it all that. Perhaps his wife escalated it beyond what it was but he took it way too far and was quite abusive.

Really, it would be a super odd profession to choose imo.

Not really. You'll find introverts can "turn on" a personality in order to deal with folks. It's just that we don't like interacting with folks. If given a choice we'd rather just hang out at home and relax. Interacting with folks can be draining for an introvert.

Bill Cosby turns out to be horrible guy, if Barbara Bowman's story is true. Truth be told I never really researched anything about Bill Cosby, he just had that nice guy image in my head.

Nicest: Sean Bean and John Petrucci from Dream Theatre, John was such a dude, hung out in our guitar store for a few hours, chilling, showing us some licks, a good day.

Arsehole: Vanessa Mai, such a brat and the whole of Paradise Lost, pricks.

I've always heard Nick Holmes was a bit of a prickly bastard (although he was hilariously sarcastic on stage when the band toured Australia a few years back) but I'm surprised to hear that the whole band are less than pleasant.

Inversely from the thread topic, and I can only go by stage interactions, but despite how much of a lunatic Dave Mustaine has become he is a consummate professional onstage, always giving 100% for the audience.

Also, Slayer were really cool dudes when I met them at a signing 16 years ago.

I've seen a ton of interviews with Chris Evans and he actually does seem like a really nice guy. Gaga I've heard mixed things about but Evans is probably one of my favorite celebrities and I haven't heard anything about him being an asshole.

I don't think Evans is an asshole, but he definitely comes across as not embracing stardom, which is usually mistaken for being an asshole.

I've been on set with the guy. He's nice, just keeps to himself. Honestly I think the guy is an introvert. Wouldn't be surprised if after all this crazy MCU shit is over he slinks away directing his own indie films or something.

I saw him in an interview, I think it was Jimmy Fallon. He brought his brother along. He seemed uncomfortable though he was trying to be really gregarious. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he is introverted.

come on now, don't do this people, don't judge people based on personal matters that you have no relation to or know anything about

even if celebrities are an easy target for unwarranted attention

Had the displeasure of working near Bill Nye when he was small time (1996) filming some bit at EPCOT.

Colossal asshole. I can't imagine getting bigger has made him any better.

I see a few other confirmations, but I'll add one more. Worked with him back in 2000 or so at a Halloween festival for kids. Not a single thing could be said to him with him shooting back a snarky response. By the end of the day, the entire crew knew to steer clear of him. Just a complete pain to deal with.

Thankfully, Doris Roberts from Everybody Loves Raymond, was also at the show and seem to compensate for the trouble Nye was causing by being amazing the entire time. She was an absolute pleasure to deal with.

The fact that he appeared on Doug Loves Movies was pretty impressive for such a big star. Needing to get a little drunk to handle it suggests that he really isn't comfortable in the lime light.
Kept thinking people were talking about Bill Nighy instead of that bowtie goofball.

Bill Nighy stays awesome
Me to, I was thinking that it seemed unlikely.

Tumblr is so weird.

LGBTQ communities on tumblr tend to be some of the most thin skinned people on the planet. I'm all for speaking out against the actual bullshit these folk have to put up with, but the ones on tumblr seem to take offense to anything and everything.

PS - I don't even know who Grey Delisle is, just a mini rant in general.

Oh, and I have no idea what kind of reputation Ellen Burstyn has, but despite looking like the "mean old lady" character type she is absolutely awesome person in my experiences with her. Spent about a week with her on set and she was so damn nice and funny. Even while shooting sad scenes, inbetween takes she'd crack jokes and start convos with crew and extras. Really great person. Made me so happy to see her in Louie shortly after.

Kevin Cosner was surprisngly nice as well. He had lunch with me and a few other extras on set (for those who don't know: THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN on studio sets) and talked a lot about, you guessed it, sports. This was right before MoS came out too. Good times.

EDIT: Realize this is OffTopic, but dammit I only wanna share the nice stuff!

Not to drag this way off topic, but since you have already I'll go. Speaking out about the small things is the only way people will realise that those small things actually hurt people. They're not being thin skinned they are just pointing out that there are a lot of homophobic, transphobic etc. things that a lot people do and don't realise it. Keeping quiet about small things that you and others don't think matters does not help, in fact it does the exact opposite. "thin skinned" bullshit, they're just pointing out smaller forms of oppression that you don't want to recognise.

On topic: I've heard Jack Reynor is a bit of a dick.

Evans has huge social anxiety issues, which is why he wanted to be a director. You can see how awkward he is on one on one interview. He needs someone a bit more extroverted like Hemsworth or Johanssen to bounce off conversation with otherwise his interview gets really awkward fast. But he's a nice guy like Keanu. Hugh Jackman is another nice actor working in Hollywood.

Disappointed with Harrison Ford. I used to look up to him but he becomes such a grumpy old man these days.

I'm not surprised about Bill Nigh, honestly. I never really watched his show as a kid but over the past year or two I've seen him in the occasional interview and he's guest hosted on Neil Degrasse Tyson's podcast Startalk, and I've always picked up an unfriendly jerk-vibe from him.

NDT though....I'd be heartbroken if he turned out to be an asshole. He seems like a genuinely super nice dude.

Robert de Niro seems like a decent Italian fellow that you could have andless conversations with him, but he's actually not. He's an elitist, fan-hater asshole. Nothing "Italian" about him.

Josh Brolin, Matthew Fox, William Shatner, David Letterman, Mel Gibson, Alan Rickman are also nothing close to what they seem.

That sounds pretty Italian to me.

this is interesting. heard a football coach saying that he tells his players they have to be super careful.

meet 100 people in a day and your great with 99 of them, and 1 person is an arsehole and you tell them to fuck off.

your reputation is that you are a dick.

negative stuff travels further and faster than the positive. he said he feels sorry for the players because they get hounded everywhere and that 99 - 1 scenario is entirely possible.
This is so true of life in general.

I work in a small manufacturing company. We only have a few hundred customers, so I have a semi-personal relationship with everyone we sell to. I only interact with my contacts a few times a year and it is kind of amazing to see how these relationships evolve overtime. Some of them think I'm the best guy ever and some think I'm some shifty guy from New York City. In some cases, single interactions from ~10 years ago (when I started with the company) color the entire relationship.

Jim Gaffigan. They paid him to come perform at my place of employment and a few people won "meet and greet" passes with him. Apparently he was kind of a jerk and acted like he had better places to be, despite the absurd amount of money they paid him to be there for a few hours.

He always seemed like a cool, down to Earth kind of guy.

This breaks my heart.

I've met Norm Macdonald - really funny and laid back, Insane Clown Posse - super nice and down to earth, Tim & Eric - Eric was cool as shit and Tim was kind of cold.

Disappointed with Harrison Ford. I used to look up to him but he becomes such a grumpy old man these days.

I think as an actor he's fallen off and I've heard a few grumpy stories but I've also heard he is quite a badass. He flies a helicopter around and has been involved in a few rescue operations. He also air patrols a river valley near his home. If you're fucking around in the river you may get buzzed out of nowhere with Harrison Ford hovering over you, telling you over a megaphone to smarten the fuck up.

Please elaborate on Rashida Jones, though it doesn't surprise me. Born with a silver spoon and all, being Quincy Jones daughter and having easy access into the business.

In fact, I think brief anecdotes detailing why people had bad experiences should accompany every post. Just throwing names out there means nothing.

Can you talk about your meeting Rashida at all?

My heart... it is broken.

Met her at a party, she acted completely annoyed when any fans asked her for a photo. Treated the wait staff like they weren't human. Berated someone for accidentally bumping into her. By comparison, Craig Robinson was there with her and looked completely embarrassed by her behavior. He couldn't have been any nicer.

Apparently Adam Richman from Man vs. Food is a huge asshole off camera.

Can confirm. Met him a few years ago.

I remember the story of how CM Punk was a massive dick to Greg Miller at Comic Con, so I guess him although he doesn't come off as a person who looks like they would be nice.

Bruce Willis. He seems like a jerk based off The Red 2 interviews and what Kevin Smith has said about him.

I think the problem with Bruce is that he hasn't been able to adapt to a post movie star world. He's used to his fraternity of 80s and 90s mega-stars and now they're not a big draw. Pretty much the only time he seems to have fun is when he's on Letterman because Letterman is from that same era.

As for celebrities I've encountered.

Karl Urban- Was at a convention and went to his autograph signing. You could tell he was really tired and had already dealt with hundreds of fans. Still managed to work up a smile and say "Dredd fan, huh? Good man." I asked if I could grab a picture really fast, but he said "Sorry, they won't let me," gesturing to his handler. You can't really get an actual impression of someone in such a manufactured environment, but still I feel like Urban is a pretty cool guy.

Scott Stapp- I served him a drink at a restaurant a few years ago. He never made eye contact our acknowledged my presence. It was weird. I don't think it would really surprise anyone though.

Switchfoot- Somehow got roped into dismantling their stage after a show. They came out, thanked everybody, posed for pictures, talked to people's friends on their phone, joked around, and chatted. They were insanely nice. I don't like their music, but those guys are alright.

Bruce Johnston from the Beach Boys- Served him at the restaurant. Didn't know who he was, but he introduced himself as "Bruce from the Beach Boys." He was really friendly and talkative.

David Gregory from NBC News once spiced me out of the way as he was exiting a building.

From the ones I met,

Gary Oldman - Awesome guy

Tom Hardy- By far the coolest celeb I've met.

Michael Bay - extremely nice

Oscar De La Hoya - Cool, has an insane laugh

haven't really met any assholes yet

Wil Wheaton
My younger brother tried to say hi to him once and Wheaton ignored him and then made a joke about my brother being bald. I thought the encounter was hilarious given that he had a few months earlier told that young girl that bullying sucks.

Worst I've encountered: Peter Mayhew

Was just rude to me and everyone else. Goodness.

Weeeird, when I chatted with him I felt him and his wife were some of the sweetest people I ever met.

Mike Krahulik? Does he count? I heard he's quite a dick.

Extremely photogenic fellow.
