FFVIII, the entire game was butchered when translated into English

In FFXIII like FFVIII, they butchered it. They were too afraid to use God or Goddess so they just made up words like "the maker"

They messed the Analects up by making even more vague.

Hope's reason for being a kid was omitted in the English LR.

Lightning is more of an asshole in the English version.

Yeah, I've heard other things about FFVIII, like Squall's more dickish moments being more generally antisocial or snarky. Neku's attitude in The World Ends With You seems more like how Squall was supposed to come off originally. Also, I don't understand why they changed "Witch" to "Sorceress", considering that witch has connotations to an English-speaking audience that fit the story.

Asshole Lightning is an improvement in my book though. When Lightning stopped being an asshole she was just bland.
 
This doesnt technically count as a pure localisation but still the most drastic one I know is that Decap Attack was a westernised version of Magical Flying Turbo Hat Adventure, the gameplay remained similar but obviously a lot was changed:

the game End of Eternity was localized as Resonance of Fate
also the character Reanbell was localized into Leanne

Similarly tt's A Wonderful World > The World Ends With You (due to copyright reasons iirc)

also iirc, many of the names in Xenoblade were changed slightly from JP > EN

Having played FFXIII when it first came out in Japan, that would have been a nightmare to localize. Such a goddamn nonsensical plot.
 
The Japanese version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance had White blood instead of Red blood in order to avoid a CERO Z rating (Japanese equivalent to an ESRB AO rating).
 
"Low Kick" from the JPN version of Pokemon was changed to "Low Sweep" in the ENG version because "Low Kick" was already used for a different move. It's not a huge change but I find it pretty amusing.

"Magical Shine" was changed to "Dazzling Gleam". Magical Shine was totally cooler. :(

In Gen I there were a lot of Pokemon named after English words, like "Windie", "Thunder", "Thunders", "Booster", "Barrier'd", "Freezer", "Fire", etc. Most of those were changed. This is one of those instances where being as faithful as possible would have been a horrible decision. Well, horrible if they wanted the games to sell well at least.

Finally, the GTS's "Naughty Name Detector" works fine with all non-NN'd mons caught in JPN-language games. This was changed for the English releases. :P

That reminds me of another Pokemon translation, not in English though, Spanish. The move "Slam" was changed to "Portazo"... "Door Slam".

Where are all of these Pokemon getting these doors from?
 
In Final Fantasy VI, Kefka was rewritten into a highly memorable JRPG equivalent of the Joker from being a lot more generic in the original.

The main character's name was also changed from "Tina" to "Terra" because Tina is a more common anglophone name and the idea was to have her sound somewhat exotic.

FFVI had a lot of stuff like this courtesy of Ted Woolsey, and most of it contributed heavily to the game being so well-loved and remembered in America. It's my favorite kind of translation, honestly; they took liberties with the script to help convey the spirit of the work, rather than being as dry and literal as possible.

I definitely look at Ted Woolsey as a big component of why the FF6 to FF9 era of Squaresoft was their peak. Yea, they were full of errors, but those translations were oozing with personality and charm. He gave us "Ozzy", "Flea", and "Slash", after all.

I can't help but think of how much better FFXIII or other recent SE titles would be if they had a Ted Woolsey-like touch.

Original Japanese version name was DeCameron.

...Of course though, for anyone who knows Japanese, the name change was a bit of a woolseyism to preserve the pun that the Japanese audience got with DeCameron.

Though I agree that FFXIII would have benefited greatly by a better translation, they should have kept with calling Bhunivelze 'the Maker' instead of 'God'. It is easy to forget that Bhuni was always intricate to the FFXIII story from the very first game because of the lack of term consistency.
