Changing payment on an existing Amazon pre-order?

So my bank sends me a new credit card yesterday, but the old one is still good for a while yet.

The old one has my Switch pre-order on Amazon... if I update the credit card information on the site, is that going to cancel or otherwise fuck up my Switch pre-order?

If there's a chance of it, I'll just wait until after it ships before activating the new card, so the old one will still work.
 
yup it will reset your place in the queue.

I do not recommend changing your payment information. I got screwed when I did this for my 3ds preorder a while ago and they couldn't send me it until like a week after release date.
 
I HAVE DONE THIS MULTIPLE TIMES on preorder at amazon, and never had a problem. as long as the order is not processing, you should be ok.
 
I've changed card details on multiple orders in the past including my psvr and PS pro and it didn't fuck up anything and I didn't lose my place in line.

I always add the new card details first then change payment details on my orders before deleting my old card details. Never had an issue.
 
I've done this a lot when the preorder is further out (The Switch would fall under this category), but I've heard enough stories of people getting their order reset where I would probably hold off unless you had to switch it though
 
From reading the Switch amazon thread last night it may be a regional thing. I'm in the US and have never had a preorder cancelled by changing payment method, address or adding gift cards. And before anyone says it, yes that includes sold out things. I changed the payment method on my FE Fates LE and still got it and just last night added a giftcard to my Switch preorder and its still there.

edit: someone also posted something interesting last night about changing his address and receiving a phone call to verify that change or they were going to cancel the order. I haven't had that problem either but its worth considering that some people may have missed phone calls in the past due to circumstances or old phone numbers on file.
 
You can change payments, shipping address etc and it's fine. I had no issues with Amazon on any of these matters. As long as it's before the release date. Even then I think it's fine as long as it's before the actuall shipping.
 
There's probably a good chance of Amazon opening up pre-orders again at some point before launch, so even if it resets, I suppose there's a chance I'd still be in queue for launch day release.

I'll probably just talk to customer service and make sure before I do anything.
 
I ran into this when I went to preorder my PS VR. It will change your ship date to the next available ship date. Which will be when ever they get more in. What I did was just buy a Amazon gift card online with my new card and payed off the balance.
 
From a conversation this morning about my Switch and Master Edition preorders with Amazon US:

04:45 AM PST Jose: there is a list when you pre order, so if we modify the shipping speed you will loose your position in the list

To clarify, I was just trying to change the Expiration on the card already applied to my Amazon account and the very same card tied to all my current orders.

Hm. That might help me here, too, since the new card has the same card number, just a different expiration date and security code.

When you update your credit card stored in your account with the new expiration date, it just is automatically applied to all existing orders that hasn't shipped. So there's nothing order specific about that action.

I was still paranoid that it would have some potential negative impact on all of those orders.

Everything seems fine for now.
 
On Amazon UK it puts you at the bottom of the queue and resets your preorder position effectively. I did this after updating my billing address but the same card. Delivery date went from March 3rd to no current estimate. Confirmed with customer support. Going to cancel as I've got one elsewhere from Nintendo direct now.
 
That loosing your place in the queue must be a US thing, they don't even cancel your order if your card is expired, they just send you an email to warn you about that and to try another payment method. Happened to me once, forgot the card expired, just added the new one and the package was shipped in that same day.

I'm not sure why it would be different outside of the US. What happens is when you update certain pieces of info, it's like creating a new order in their system. Because of that, it gets put at the end of the line of of current orders. Where the problem occurs is when it's a limited or sold out item and there isn't stock available and that can cause havok with trying to create a new order for that item. It's all behind the scenes, and for the most part, people would never notice that this is happening except when it is a limited or sold out item. I imagine Amazon's software works like that worldwide but most people just don't find themselves in a situation to notice it.

Yes, same here. My payments were defaulting to my Amazon Prime storecard and I was able to switch a few preorders to another payment by going to "Edit Payment Details" or something similar through my settings options. It had no effect on my order status.
 
Similar question: How does this work with your Amazon gift card balance? Will it auto-deduct even if there was no balance at checkout, or can you change your payment to include it? Don't want to mess up my day one Switch plans, but I'm getting a large amazon credit from some returns and wanted to put it towards my order.

Definitely not a US thing. Seems to be a U.K. thing.

I literally just added a new debit card and switched it to my payment method last night. Never been a problem on Amazon US. I've done it over a dozen times.

You can go look at it without submitting any changes. But usually you have to cancel and reorder.

What if you apply gift card balance to the order? Because that's an option you can click without editing the payment method
 
Seems to be okay. I updated it in the back-end, and since the card number stayed the same, it's still saved as "Card ending in XXXX", so technically, the payment method on the order itself didn't change.
 
I changed my credit card for this order the other day, and it still says Arriving Fri, Mar 3. I really hope I didn't lose my place in line... Amazon US here.
 
I imagine it would update right away if there were a problem. If it's been a few days and it still says 3/3, then you should be okay. I'll be checking mine just to make sure, but so far so good.

I checked again and I actually changed it the next day after preorders started. I've been checking my orders frequently (mainly bc Zelda had a Mar 13th date) and my Switch date never changed. So I think we're good!
 
I'm trying wrap my head around how this could make any sense, shouldn't whatever tables that store orders have auto generated IDs that stay static no matter what is updated withinn the order's data? There's no reason to reset order queue, at all.
 
I think it's just the way their system works, that they can't seem to make major changes to an order on the fly. So they end up cancelling the order and making a new one.
 
yes and no...

ive been told by multiple CS reps from amazon that it will reset your position in the queue...basically sending u to the back of the line....this is only an issue for items that are super limited, or if they take more preorders than they will have items on hand...

for something like the switch? i would ride it out with the existing card as long as it wont expire before launch
 
I've only recently heard people say that orders are cancelled when doing that, but I've never had a problem.

If there really is some kind of line you get sent to the back of when you change your payment, my advice would be to just keep it the same up until they try to charge you, I have to imagine your spot would probably be secured at that point.
 
You can reload your account with enough funds to cover the system then choose apply gift card balance to pay for it.
 
As long as you don't do it 4-5 days before release date you should be fine. If you do, you will lose your place. Sometimes it gives you 2 days later after release delivery (prime) or you won't get an updated delivery date at all.
 
I've got an order with Amazon UK for SMT IV Apocalypse. Managed to get in on that £28.50 before it was sold out. Now it's unavailable.

It says it'll arrive anytime between 7th feb and 7th of march, but it says it'll dispatch on the 3rd of march. Problem is the card I've placed is having problems. If I order a amazon uk printable gift card, can I use that to pay this order off without losing my order? It's no longer available so I don't want to risk it but changing the card doesn't sound like a good idea either.

Thought?
 
Don't listen to these people - we've had these threads multiple times: on limited items changing you payment method DEFINITELY resets your place in line. This will not be a problem if there is enough stock. If there is a shortage, you'll be at the end, though.

The way to overcome this is to apply gift cards to your account, then go into the order and it will allow you to apply it without changing your place in the queue.

Again, if stock is appropriate, you'll see no issue, the problem only arises when it's a limited item.
