Cheetahmen II: The Lost Levels (Kickstarter)

StarEye

From the FAQ:

"DO I HAVE TO OWN AN NES CONSOLE TO PARTICIPATE?

--OF COURSE NOT, WE'LL TAKE YOUR MONEY REGARDLESS OF YOUR PERSONAL DEFICIENCIES. BESIDES, IF YOU CAN'T START THE GAME, YOU WILL LIKELY HAVE A GREATLY ENHANCED QUALITY OF LIFE. (AND THE GAME WILL LIKELY BE WORTH MUCH MORE IN ITS PRISTINE, UNPLAYED STATE)"

Kickstarter is not the correct venue for this, but it is fucking hilarious. This dude's name sounded familiar and I realized I'd read an article about him and the fact that he's practically the only person on the planet who has met Vince Perri. http://www.videogamemuseum.com/2010/06/24/the-evolution-of-the-action-52/

I have to hand it to him, he's taken one prototype cart and made way more than he would have just by selling it. And at least we have rom dumps of the prototype for preservation purposes.

I refuse to pay money to play Cheetahmen II, though. I might spring for a remix cd or something in the future.

I threw $5 their way..For the pure cheese factor and the absolutely broken concept. This will appeal to all those proto heads out there I guess.

AVGN already doing damage control. This has been added to the YouTube info on his video:

This is a project by GREG PABICH.

Note: James was asked to appear in this video advertisement because he had made a review about Cheetahmen. Any funds donated to this project do NOT go to James or Cinemassacre.

In 20 years people with donate money for DNF because, you know, it's funny. Gaming community need shit like this to demonstrate how is mature.

I don't see why they need $60,000, plenty of homebrew developers have had their games published by RetroZone without a KickStarter. I doubt the demand would be high enough that they wouldn't be able to meet it.

What the fuck.

I mean.

Honestly.

IF this project gets fully funded, I will actually lose my faith in the gaming community.

The fact that everyone blindly gives money to every single gamestarter like it's the second coming didn't already do that?

SOME THINK THIS IS THE WORST GAME EVER PRODUCED; SOME THINK IT IS PART OF A GRAND PLAN/VISION THAT INVOLVES WORLD DOMINATION. SOME THINK IT SHOULD BE BANNED WORLDWIDE INSTEAD OF IN JUST 77 COUNTRIES. MANY WOULD ATTEST TO HOW IT CHANGED THEIR LIFE.

ALL I KNOW FOR SURE IS THAT WITHOUT YOUR HELP, THIS VERY IMPORTANT WORK OF GAMING ART AND HISTORY WILL NOT GET INTO THE HANDS OF THOSE WHO TRULY NEED IT.

well someone is a fan of Top Gear, huh?

The music was amazing, some friends and me used some remixes one time for a party in Barcelona and it was awesome, people didnt know where the fuck the music was from and loved it.

LOL I almost want to see this get funded just to see more rage tears on youtube. Doubt they'll reach that goal though.

Well, they already got $10,000 so I think they're gonna make it.

$60 for the cart (with full packaging, comic, manual, etc) isn't a huge ripoff for a collector.

Wow just watched the Game Chasers video with the Pabich guy. He is clearly insane, he has cheetah tapestry and cheetah statues, and other weird garbage. Anyone who gives this dude money is a bad person and should feel bad.

Yeah, reproductions sometimes go for more than $60 just for a cart. Not a bad deal if you don't mind playing a shitty game.

I would like to hear more about the rarest game that are actually good. Cheetahman is rare because the rat hole in the wall company that was making it went under before it could be dumped on the world. I wonder what cancelled shovelware Wii game will be the next holy grail.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Pointless KS but entertaining video. I can't understand all the dislikes.

Because those people are fools that think "Kickstarter = e-begging". Never mind that James gets none of it and he only helped make the video because he's a nice guy.

Makes me wonder if these people know how PBS operates.

They have their own show? Will check out.

Yes, in Episode 15 (at the second half of the episode - by the way, one of their best espodes yet!) they visited Greg Pabic (Action 52 reproduction distributor or whatever), the crazy and cool old man from the AVGN video :D

bish gets all the credit :)
So why exactly does this need $65k? Please explain. Fixing a few lines of code and making a reproduction cart is not that expensive.

Aparently the dude that is doing this bought Cheetahmen's rights (yes those things costs money) and he invested in a re-release of the game as a collectible in two packages (499 and 199) before doing the kickstarter. So basically you'll be paying for a official release of the game, instead of a replica or a ROM; due the nature of this title it's a interesting option for a collector, but of course if you only want to play the game and don't mind the plataform just downoad a ROM.

No, the game that costs $199 and $499 isn't this game, it's a two level long previously unreleased version of Cheetahmen 1 that was removed late in the development of NES Action 52 in favor of the Cheetahmen 1 game that is on that cart. This one is for a new, fixed cart release of Cheetahmen 2, the standalone game. I didn't know that Cheetahmen 1 had had a canned version, but apparently it did...

Thanks for the info, BTW the kickstarter had its first update (still all caps) and it's at 19K.

This seems more like a parody of Kickstarter projects instead of it being real.

It saddens me that it's real, but the video made me laugh.

So Cheetahmen is basically famous for two reasons, 1 being a glitched game you can't finish, and 2 being really rare.

So this Kickstarter intends to fix how rare the game is, and make it playable....

That then makes Cheetahmen irrelevant!! This is not something that is required at all.

Not exactly there're a lot of reasons of why a game could be a high collectible or not, the whole Action 52/Cheetahmen is such a story that (like it or not) is now part of gaming history. I don't know if these games'll ended up being collectibles or just garbage, but I hope not to see more of this in the future.

I'm kinda surprised it took people AVGN to learn Action 52's existence.

You forgot the third reason.

Its music is essentially very popular in Japan.

The actual games are piles of crap, so if it's not the rarity of the carts that make them collectables what is??

cheetahmen is famous because people love collecting shitty rare games. The nes has many of the most expensive rare games, and they are utter shit unlicensed games that were unreleased or sold in porn shops.

This kick starter is just capitalizing on a notorious game, and isn't awful for $60. It won't impact the rarity of the real games, since there's been reproductions of all kinds of rare games already.

Getting the Angry Video Game Nerd was a smart move. He gave many people their first look at the game, and even the top 10 lists his people do on his site impact ebay prices.

Meanwhile, that guy who made I wanna be the guy released a NES game himself with no kickstarter support at all. So why do they need $60,000? Do they think every retro gamer on earth wants to own this POS, so they're making thousands of copies?

Just because the Cheetahmen theme became a popular meme?

WTF is wrong with the people donating?

Out of curiosity, I played nearly every single Action 52 game including Cheetah Men just now.

I am glad I always stay away from packages like this that include tons of low quality games, but these were just as AVGN described. I can't really tell if the Cheetah Men song is catchy or bad, it's an odd mix.

Reproductions and homebrew cartridge games are done in two ways. They either trash an existing game to use the board and cart, or use all new parts. Either way, most people selling repros do it for $40-$60+ in runs of 100 or less, or even make them per order. Even if he reaches $65k, that means he will have to produce approximately 1000 games for $60 and all the bonus stuff included in the box.

This is going to get funded because it got the AVGN stamp of approval and I wonder if the completionist NES collectors view this as something they'll have to buy. It's a re-release by the actual Cheetahmen rights holder. $60 is nothing to people who spend hundreds on unlicensed porn games.
