There is a desperation in China, the sort the U.S. had 70 years ago. Desperation to grow and learn, develop, become better, work together as a nation.

An easier explanation than that is there is desperation in China to deal with the demographic time bomb of low birth rates since the 90s. Russia is in a similar but worse situation since the 90s were much rougher for them. Fertility is collapsing globally, but the charts for the US and India are not as antithetical to growth.

it’s not that surprising because of the way the two countries deal with their private companies and ethics. Plus, China’s been doing just a lot of research in general.

Chinese history is fascinating and yes, "the long game" is embedded in their culture. I mean a text from thousands of years ago which was formative in Chinese culture is still impactful for many today in the i ching. Joseph Campbell said it's "an encyclopedia of oracles, based on a mythic view of the universe that is fundamental to all Chinese thought." Confucius talked about wishing to live another 50 years to dedicate to its study. Jung has spoken at length about it also, of course. They are certainly rooted in "old ways" although the expression changes with the passage of time in response to the changes of general culture. Tradition and heritage goes back a long way and is very deep and almost immovable in many ways, it seems.
