China releases progressive sex education textbook supporting same-sex couples

The textbook has been introduced to several Chinese elementary schools, and is going viral for its frank discussion of sex and homosexuality — a taboo topic in Chinese society.

Many who are in support of the book are praising it for teaching children how to recognize situations of sexual abuse.

Even more people are surprised that the book portrays same-sex relationships in a positive light, and talks about topics like rights for same-sex couples.

But voices against the book say elementary schoolers are way too young to grasp these concepts — and certainly to be exposed to graphic illustrations of intercourse and genitalia.

In a now-deleted Weibo post, a mother from Hangzhou said she found her child reading the book, and was shocked at the contents.

"Do you learn this in second grade now? Has this book really been put together properly? I can't even read the last bit. Is this a fake book from the school?"
But those in favour of the book say it's leapfrogged the traditionally conservative manner in which sex and gender is discussed.

This group includes the state-run Global Times, which published an op-ed supporting the textbook, and slammed naysayers for sensationalising and distorting its contents.

"A book that was meant to let young children learn more about gender and sex, and protect themselves from sex predators has been distorted and turned into pornographic depictions by the media and corporate Weibo accounts," the piece said.

Another Weibo user, 369RibsLaLaLaAhChai added: "I saw that line which said that 'gay people and heterosexual people had the same rights; don't discriminate' and I nearly cried."

I'm sorry I just can't help but laugh at the juxtaposition of the NSFW image and the "sexual fantasy" image.

Good on them though.

Is this how China starts giving America the finger? Every time things get regressive here, they do the opposite? If so, I like it.

"Take off your pants and let me see if your penis has grown"

Is that what chicks say in China I'm moving there. Someone confirm please

I read a book called Gaysia a few days ago that suggested that China was basically in a "don't ask, don't tell" phase. But that was written several years ago though.

How progressive!

Even though Gay Marriage is not legalized and Gay couples may not adopt and is still seen as a mental disorder by more than half of china. And well we dont talk about the past on those issues or protest because it might make china look bad and be accused of political dissent and thrown in prison.

That's kind of where I'm sitting on this too. It's cool the book is as it is, but the unfortunate thing is the book isn't reflecting the actual situation in China at all. They still have a looooong way to go.

Rather go up from lower than down from higher.

That feeling when both socially and environmentally China is making more stride than Trump's America.

I know it's a more dire situation when it comes to progressiveness in China

I don't think I ever had text books that illustrated actual sex.

Me neither. Then again, I grew up in Texas, and our sex Ed segment lasted 1 week and the only reason the teacher mentioned condoms is because a student mentioned them.

I don't know how I feel about 2nd graders learning about actual sex though, hope China knows what it's doing.

We head a health class as part of PE. And it was all covered in biology. And we watched a video in elementary school as well as a whole week long lecture on sex

I grew up in California for reference.

It's not that much different elsewhere in the world. I mean... we had a thread saying that more than half of the UK still thinks that being gay is a choice... Just because some countries have a little bit more in terms of legislation doesn't mean we should poo-poo on something that is legitimately progressive in terms of representation in a country that is otherwise perceived as sexually conservative. Although China can definitely do more, this is a step in the right direction and if things like this continue, then legislation will inevitably pave the way.

I was expecting a textbook, or at least what I perceive to be the size of a textbook, it's more like a pamphlet.

I wonder if Beijing Normal University is trolling the ruling party.

Beijing Normal University, which created the textbook, explained in a statement that the book had gone through nine years of testing in an elementary school attached to the tertiary institute, and is currently being rolled out in 18 elementary schools in China's capital.

For reference on Beijing Normal University

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beijing_Normal_University
Historically, students at Beijing Normal University played a significant role in patriotic and social movements, particularly in the May Fourth Movement in 1919, the Cultural Revolution, and the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. The New York Times once described it as "one of the most progressive institutions" in China

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I'm pretty sure this is all just to spite Trump though.

If China recognizes and legalizes same-sex/transgender rights to spite Trump I'm all for it.

Like, MCGA for real. China will return to the glory days of the Middle Kingdom.

Lol.

But isn't 2nd grade quite far off from puberty?. At that age I legit thought I was bought off a baby-store like how we 'bought' our first lab pup.

Although I wish I was told from the beginning that gay sex is as normal as straight sex. Would have prevented me from being a confused homophobic teen.

Progress is great and all, but I'm sort of bothered by the narrative in the NSFW picture. "When Daddy and Mommy love each other...", but what if they don't love each other anymore and are specifically making a kid to try and salvage their marriage?

It's a pamphlet for small kids, not a soap opera.

I doubt a kid is mature enough to understand something like that.

This is a good thing. My girlfriend is chinese and until she was 22 literally everything she knew about sex came from watching porn cos it's never taught in schools and I think a lot of parents never talk about it to their kids. The lack of information about safe sex and std's is quite dangerous I think. The LGBT stuff is encouraging too of course.

This isn't a Telenovela.

Trump isn't the center of the universe, you know.

It's a start, and anyone on GAF will know from my long-winded rants in topics about sex/sexuality/sexual expression how hard (no pun intended) I go in on our education systems.

So many problems with mental health and societal ignorance spawn from teenagers and young adults completely ill equipped to understand, handle and accept the realities and facts of life and biology.

There is no doubts in my mind this is genuinely dangerous as it either contributes towards self-harming and self-shaming, or to the abuse, othering and mocking of those different than the ignorant person behind the keyboard/mouth. In other words, it's not just about educating those who may identify as LGBT, but those around them too.

Preventative measures for bigotry, ignorance and violence are a thing, and people can change and be educated as well, especially younger minds. Without a doubt education is a large cure and disinfectant to at least a chunk of bigotry, ignorance and even simply confusion in the world today.
