China to force online games with loot boxes publicly announce item probabilities

Wait, does this only apply to items you actually have to buy, or also in-game items you can get without real-world money? If it's the latter it may be a huge issue for games with lots of random chest drops if it's enforced. I have a feeling some publishers may simply decide not to release their games in China.

Great for Chinese gamers, but means nothing for everyone else since pubs can just change the odds in other regions..

The real question is which other countries can "strongarm" stuff like this?

China is well aware about it's leverage, but what I like is that they have the balls to do it.

I get the impression some countries could also do it but would be too scared to interfere with capitalism.

That's a very interesting piece of policy. I'd say I'm in favour, but in some instances it's going to be quite tricky for the developer to express exactly how it works.

Very few games work on the principle of "1% chance -> Epic item, 10% Change ->Rare item..." etc. Most will have values that constantly ebb and flow in order to entice the player if they've been on a losing streak for a significant period of time, or some may dish out the big rewards at a higher rate earlier on in order to get players invested.

Yes, let's all be like China.

You can praise something for doing something right while criticizing at the same time when they do something wrong.

Good, but I'm not convinced it will really change the game in any way. People buy lottery tickets knowing the odds after all.

Do you have sources on this?

Definitely a great idea, but I'm curious of how much good it will do overall.

Casinos and Lotteries usually have well known odds, but that doesn't stop a lot of people from spending their money, even if the odds are 1:1000000.

I believe there's already similar legislation in Japan, and it did jack shit to reduce the number of lootbox based games. So, *shrug*

Ok, how long until Valve publishes their odds, I want to see just how bad it is for TF2 and CSGO, I have a decent idea of where Dota Stands.

Not really, your implementation doesn't really prove that most games don't use simpler systems.

Thats fair enough, obviously I don't have access to anyone else's source code but from what I've experienced in other games I would be incredibly surprised if any "Big name" games using loot-box style reward systems were just doing a simple dice roll. Remember, it's in their best interest to keep you playing (and paying).

1.23.0 Patch Notes:
-- Increased drop probability for every drop type. Enjoy!

1.23.1 Patch Notes:
-- Chinese players can now see probability rates for drops.

Nice, let's see what those overwatch rates are.

edit: blizzard will probably adjust probabilities in China by like 1% and say "the probabilities in China are different from everywhere else, don't believe those numbers :^)"

Pretty sure this is all in an effort to more efficiently exploit video game addict "rehab" loot farms to extract capital from westerners.

Yay state capitalism!

Its almost surreal how "accepted" lootboxes are nowadays.

They convinced people to spend a lot of money to get almost nothing back. Amazing.
