China to force online games with loot boxes publicly announce item probabilities

I don't get why they puts such efforts into legislation on loot box probabilities when there are so many other issues China has that really deserve more attention.

I wonder how this will affect the many games that change the odds based on player behavior or even use totally different systems than a simple random draw.

Even the most "honest" games at the very least perform A/B testing on their rates.

If there's a difference, we should be able to compare them using the charts for the China version.

I think.

Compare what though? We would need to open tons and tons of in game crates just to have anything remotely close to the probabilities. It's like flipping a coin, flip it a few times and you get a skewed result. Flip it over a longer period of time and it evens out.

While true, I expect a flood of videos of people opening 10 loot boxes in these games, someone not getting what they wanted, and saying it's a huge scam and Blizzard/Valve/Activision/whoever should be put out of business, etc etc. Too many people don't understand/don't care to learn how statistics work.

1 in 10,000 for dota ultra rares is just disgusting.

Especially when there are whales willing to pay the price.

ok this is nice.. may be we will find out the true probabilities of the Hearthstone packs and the Overwatch lootboxes
They will probably change the probabilities just before the stats show up and different probabilities for different regions

Definitely a great idea, but I'm curious of how much good it will do overall.

Casinos and Lotteries usually have well known odds, but that doesn't stop a lot of people from spending their money, even if the odds are 1:1000000.

It won't change anything I reckon

There are signs like this all over my state but people still spend a shit load of time and money on the pokies (slot machines)

The human mind turns that poster into this:

When China is the first to do something about this bullshit, then you know the rest of the world fucked up by sitting on its hands.

Its easy money and nobody wants to mess up the easy money stream.

Its truly unbelievable how things are today.

What about for items where even the Devs don't know the drop rates? For an example, see Anarchy Online.

How is it possible for them to not know the drop rate? Is someone else creating the actual crates?

I'm not familiar with Anarchy Online so I don't know how their system works.

This thread is so fucked. China do something good. Some GAFers praise them for that one good act and some other GAFers are acting as if praising means wanting to be assimilated by China. Smh.

Anyway on topic: what are the chances for similar rulings to be implemented in Western markets?

Lootboxes should just internationally be regarded as gambling, including proper age checks, taxing and information regarding help for addicts.

Still no word from blizzard on loot box statistics, interesting. When do they have to publish them? I assumed it wouldve been yesterday.

Valve just changes the odds for China so they look less abusive than they really are. They don't have to show shit for the odds that the rest of the world gets.

Juked.

I saw the odds they posted for the dota chests - hilariously fabricated and way more generous than the norm.
