Choice of Dog -- Shiba or Pug

I actually never liked Pugs until I got one of my own.

Love them now. They have such entertaining personalities and they're really fun to be around. Definitely gotta keep their health in check but it's a very rewarding experience to take care of one.

Don't buy a dog, rescue one. If you are a heartless being and don't want to rehome a poor unwanted puppy then make absolutely sure it's from a reputable breeder or you'll end up buying from a puppy farm which only arseholes and ignorant people do.

Australian Shepherds! or Golden Retrievers!

...Too big?

I've actually thought about a full-blown German Shepherd or Lab, but my current house + yard might be a bit too small for one of them. I love big dogs, but my current arrangement just doesn't suit them I'm afraid.

Thread answer: Shiba. I can't stand pugs. Yeah, they're cute when they're pups, but I feel that Shibas just age better.

Personal answer:
Pomsky. Greatest of all time.

Rescue a dog. My neighbor has a Chug and she doesn't have breathing problems. I don't see any reason to want a pure bred. My dog is a Schipperke-chihuahua mix and she's the best dog I've ever owned. Super energetic and doesn't bark.

Pugs adjust to your lifestyle, are very easy-going, very affectionate, and are great fun to be around.

Shibas are an internet meme.

Why not a rescue? Thousands of dogs without homes.
My first thought as well. Way too many dogs out there needing homes.

I work at a vet and we see a decent amount to of both pugs and Shibas. We see the pugs more often though as they are more prone to have certain health issues, especially respiratory ones. I do love pug personalities though, they are hilarious little dogs. Shibas can be awesome but also stubborn. Good luck with your choice!

Shibas always seemed to be kind of dicks. Pugs got loads of health issues though... so eh, it's a trade off, but if you want a dick dog you might as well just get a cat.

I love pugs. I also love big dogs. So I split the difference and got a bullmastiff. Between the Shiba and the pug, I'd probably get a pug. I also agree with the people who suggest you take a look and see what the pound has to offer before looking into breeders. If you still want a specific breed, go for it... but at least give the guys a chance if you can. It's not their fault that no one bred them to be pretty.

I would never get a Pug because I think they're ugly as hell, but my wife, who has bred lots of different breeds before including Pugs, would say to go with that over the Shiba Inu. FAR better temperament, and whoever said Pugs are stupid is wrong.

Neither. Both are vastly inferior to Anatolian Shepherds.

My Anatolian Lilly was by far the most intelligent, loyal, and alert dog I ever owned. She never bothered any of the cats, and when she played with them, she was never rough or anything like that. Hell. She would let the cats sleep on her from time to time. Anatolian is best dog.

I have owned both. I prefer shibas which I own right now.

My girlfriend puts it this way: you'll own a pug, but a shiba will own you. They don't listen to commands and they're really weird personality-wise, but they are awesome all the same. I have two and they often run the house!

One of the oldest breeds in the world = fad?

Also, shibas are super loving and silly with their own family. Just cause you saw one once and it didn't smother you with kisses doesn't mean the breed has a bad temperament. It just didn't know you. People think they're cute and assume they must be full of kisses upon meeting them.

See I love dogs this size and would actually be my first choice, but alas I don't have that much space :(

EDIT:
The kind of people who buy those dogs are the kind of people who should not own dogs. They aren't supposed to be a cute accessory for your life.

What are you going to do in 8 months when a new dog is the trendy internet-loved breed?

Not looking for a trendy dog. I'm looking for a dog that fits the space I have available plus can be a companion to myself and my current dog. If a breed other than the two I listed fits the bill better in my search then I will consider it as well.

That's a lot of assuming and projecting here.

do mixed pugs (Puggles) still have breathing problems? Or is it only pure Pugs?

Depends on what kind of puggle you get - some have the longer beagle nose and some have the shorter pug nose. They're a mix so nothing is guaranteed. My puggle has the longer beagle nose and has zero breathing problems.

Pugs smell, are coarse and uncomfortable to hold/play with, and make a lot of bad and annoying sounds all day and night. But they do have a ton of personality.

I got my shibas three years before they became a popular meme.

/hipster

I want a pom but i hear they die fast. I also wanted a pug but i never heard that they smelled before.

Living with a pug is like living with a 80 year old man with COPD and asthma who hacks and farts all day.

A pug would be a good reminder as to how evil dog breeding can be

I would say you almost got it right the first time. For most people, dogs are companions.

"Hunting companion" is not necessarily a friend. Dogs used for hunting are ones who rustle prey from their hiding spots and/or retrieve carcases. They serve a specific (and for some) necessary role. Dogs do not need to have a particular "purpose" in order to justify owning one, beyond having a living, breathing accessory.

Shiba for sure. I don't like pugs at all really. Better question for me would be corgi or shiba.. I have no idea.

I love my Shiba, but you should definitely know what you're getting into before you bring one home. Very, very different dogs. I grew up with dogs my entire life--Rottweilers mostly--and having a Shiba is an entirely different experience. Rewarding, but almost equally frustrating.

Very wary around strangers. Not aggressive, not scared, but definitely not friendly. Loves attention but on her own terms. Extremely lazy, except on her own terms. Actually that's a really good across the board description for Shiba's: they only like things on their own terms. At the same time they're incredibly easy to house train and are super clean.

Lots of pros, lots of cons. Just make sure you know that the descriptions you're reading are, for the most part, incredibly accurate. I could not imagine a more stubborn breed.

Shiba's aren't even in the top 50 breeds in America bruh, you're imagining a problem that doesn't exist. They're too expensive and hard to get for that to become an issue. And I think almost everyone in this thread has had theirs pre-meme. Almost everyone that has mentioned owning one on GAF period, actually.

Edit--I checked for 2013--they made #46! Moving on up.
