Far easier to get by without hearing these days with a lot of communication being done via email/IM.
It definitely has some social costs but I see losing sight being much more severe in that regard as well.

Losing complete hearing would mean I'd need to learn a new language, Sign Language, which requires a completely different mindset and mentality. Also lip reading.
Losing sight would require to learn Braille and I'd still be able to maintain most of my current habbits and talk as I do.
Unfortunately where I live roads, pavements and infrastructure are a mess for the visually impaired, so losing sight is not the most convenient option.

Hearing. I already know some basics of sign language and I'd still be able to read.
I do know some one who is slowly going blind. It's amazing how you begin to adjust and adapt to limitations when something happens.

So apparently all TV shows in the UK are required(maybe not required but they still do it) to have descriptive video but the US doesn't, that fucking sucks.
At around 4 minutes in she listens to How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days in descriptive video.

You won't enjoy the action packed movies anymore, but you'll still be able to enjoy the good dialogue driven movies fine. Sitcoms are still good, maybe better than if you had video and no audio.

As someone with crippling depression, I enjoy a very limited amount of things in life. Music and sound in general is easily at the very top.
I find myself less disappointed and more excited by music than film and tv nowadays.
I like listening to music, being able to hear a guitar, a singer sing, someone's voice, the echo of footsteps in an empty hallway, etc.
My memory is only as vivid as sound allows. I remember voices and background noise a lot more than whatever I was looking at when it happened.
No hearing would be the loss of the only thing I can even say I'm passionate about. It keeps my sad ass going sometimes.
Also - farts. Silent killers are overrated. Give me a sneaky squeaker any day.

Pretty difficult decision. Music is my life and I wouldn't want to not be able to hear it, but I also don't want all that's beautiful in the world to not be visible.

Most communication is non verbal and you can be fully independent without hearing and are mostly reliant on others without sight.
But I think you are being contrarian on purpose, though I don't believe anyone saying sight.
Yeah, I'd definitely keep sight. I'd go crazy and panic if I became blind, while I'll just work myself into depression if I lost my hearing.

I wouldn't want to die because death is easy or I'm some sad cunt.
I would want to die because losing either would frustrate my life to no end.
Especially considering the interests, hobbies and career I'm in.
It would be frustrating to be able to see something yet not hear the sounds it makes.

I would rather die in this scenario. I've been allowed to taste lifes most precious sweets and taking either of them away from me is going to result in a deep frustration.

Probably somebody who's whole career depended on it? Successful professional chef, perfume designer, beer craftsman, sommerlier etc would likely pick hearing. since without smell the taste of food changes.

Yup, hearing would have to go.
Sight is too essential to my main hobbies (miniature painting/assembly, games, etc)

Losing your hearing can also fuck up your sleep cycle, as it can be accompanied by a permanent case of tinnitus.

Losing hearing would sadden me greatly, especially now that I've decided to explore my meager musical abilities (learning 2 instruments + voice) but sight is way too important for me.
If I had only my sight left I would focus on visual art instead (it's my main talent anyway). And I could still speak and communicate even without hearing--lip reading would totally be up my alley.

you wouldn't be on the internet, browsing shit and watching porn. You couldn't drive. Imagine trying to cook, or fly to another country. Or shit, try getting to the nearest 7-11. Yes blind people have managed to do most of this on their own, but I'm sure it took them a long time.

There's plenty of software that reads online text for the blind. I'd honestly suggest people go meet blind people or atleast read some articles about their everyday routines. Their life can be difficult but not quite that pathetic.

This is anecdotal because I have only gotten to know one blind person in my life but yeah I think that's a factor too. The shit she has to put up with just boggled my mind. I mean, people will make physical contact with you to test if you're really blind, not always lightly either. People would patronize her constantly, too, and try to help her in ways that would only hinder her.

I'm deaf and I listen to music, go to gigs, watch films and tv while hearing the dialogue and SFX and I'm able to communicate perfectly fine with hearing people by speaking and listening. All because I have a cochlear implant. Hell I even mix music and play some too.
The technology is there to help you hear, I must mention it's not a cure for hearing loss and it's not perfect but it's pretty damn close.
With the loss of sight there isn't technology that is able to offer what a hearing aid/cochlear implant does for a deaf person.
