Christian Group Plans Protest Over Michael Sam Joining Cowboys

Basketball team owner makes racist comment? Whatever
Professional football players getting concussions on a yearly basis? Yawn.
Professor football players rape/beat their wives? Eh.
High school/college sports players rape girls and still manage to join the team again? A-okay.

Openly gay man joins a professional football team? OH HECK NO. NO ON MY WATCH! BURN THE GAY!

I expected more from my home state. I guess I was too optimistic.

So where were these guys when countless of NFL players beat their wives, drove drunk, got in off the field altercations. Where were they when Big Ben got away with some shady stuff?

I believe they are based out of Michigan, and were planning these protests at the Rams first home game before Sam was released. So not really a Texas thing.

These people are fools. They know nothing about being Christians. They do the work of the devil, showing hate for their brothers and sisters. What about love your neighbor as you love yourself? It's a very important commandment to keep. They say they follow Christ, but they've completely ignored his message so they aren't really Christians anyways. It's about imitating Christ, the one who is loving and accepting of every person, even the enemies. These people are the enemies unfortunately, and they use the name of Christ to expose the evil in their hearts to the world. It's truly a sad thing to see.

Isn't the bolded and the highlighted a bit contradictory? :P

I really don't get the "think of the children" viewpoint. Kids aren't some little fragile snowflake that will shatter if they're exposed to reality. They've probably figured most of this stuff out by the age of six or seven anyways and just ask the questions to find out what the adults think.

Or at least, that's what I remember from being a kid.

Its a cheap attempt to appeal to sympathy. Trying to make people think that children's innocence will be shattered if something is tolerated is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

I actually like this news.

Folks with this theocratic mindset are a substantial part of the Republican base. I like this type of event; it reminds voters of this little fact.

Man these people really will never admit they lost this battle. It's over, nothing will change that. Get over it. Even back when gay marriage bans were happening the writing was on the wall: teens and young people were shifting.

No, they stand up all the time. But they don't get nearly as much attention

Problem is they have no basis to criticize. Interpretations are arbitrary. Once rationality goes out the window....

Does the book not say to stone homosexuals?

Its called the Vocal minority. Its a concept many here seem incapable of grasping. The people involved in this protests are still dicks though.
The concept you don't seem to be grasping is this "vocal minority" are the ones with the power. They are the ones drafting laws and legislation bathed in these "Christian values" that do nothing but take away rights of people, be it gays, minorities, or women.

Please. They're a shrinking group.
More and more of America is supporting marriage equality and equal rights for all people every day and statistics back that up. This is just a temporary bump in the road. Society is moving forward speedily.

Just because they don't have the exact same beliefs as you doesn't mean you can say they aren't "Christian". They have just as much right to call themselves Christian as you.

Its kind of a 'no true Scotsman' sort of principle.

This guy more than likely believes that there are certain characteristics one must possess and certain principles one must live by in order to rightfully be a follower of Christ. Its like how being a 'good person' is entirely subjective. People you think are assholes may still consider themselves 'good people.' You know they're still assholes though.

And we're living on that bump right now. Should I give these horrible people a pass just because they're going supernova before burning out? The last few years have been terrible because of these people, especially at the state level. We have to spend so much time undoing the laws these people pass, that progress is being impeded.

What the hell do you even mean by giving them a pass? I'm not trying to control what you think, man. Of course you can consider what they do wrong. They have that constitutional right to protest though and you can't and fucking shouldn't prevent them from being able to do so. Support the LGBT community's work now and their kids and their kids' kids will see reason for a brighter future. Its all good.

By giving them a pass, I mean ignore what they're doing and not speak up about it.

We can call them out for being assholes, though, which they all are, objectively.

Lolalright.

I seriously don't understand how someone can say this. There's a huuge portion of the lesser developed world that would agree with them and many people in your own country that do too. How is it objective then? I totally understand that this is a problem and is upsetting for many people but don't pretend other people don't have opinions as to what constitutes an asshole.

Right, fair enough. Speak up about it by all means. Call them out on their shit. I thought you were hinting at something else for a moment.

Lol :) well Christ wasn't a person that was afraid to call out people for their evils. I don't hate them at all but they are enemies of the message to love each other, that's undeniable. They are so close minded and hurt others for their own stupidity and greed. I should not be so harsh with my words but I cannot lie and say that these people use the name of Christ in a good manner. It's like the Christ fugure that was about love and acceptance for all doesn't even matter to them. What's the point of Jesus if they don't even follow his message of love?

"Thousands of American Christians march to support marriage equality" said no news headline ever

Because there aren't nearly as many Christians out there who actively support it as there are those who merely accept it. You won't find the latter marching to support shit. You won't find most of America or the free world marching to support it either. Nothing 'wrong' with that.

I imagine this is exactly the reason why some LGBT still find it hard to come out. No one wants to get bullied like this.

That's so sad. Didn't those folks ever hear of the phrase love the sinner and not the sin? Well by trying to keep this man from making a living they sure aren't loving the sinner. It's just shameful. I think that if there is a god and I do believe there is, he probably is ashamed of these people.

Ugh, another one of these groups that make it look like all Christians are close-minded, hateful bigots. He is a pro athlete pursuing a career, it has no impact on their lives. Sam has a difficult enough road making it to the NFL he doesn't need these groups spreading hate.

Ah the old 'how will I explain this to my kids?'

gNgnB.jpg

How will parents explain homosexuality to children?!

I mean, aside from a 2 minute conversation that kids will easily understand and accept before getting back to playing with Legos?

Exactly.

What they really mean is closer to "How will I transmit my hatred of gay people to my children? It's not easy you know, kids these days are harder than ever to indoctrinate into homophobia."

Always going to have groups like this in every aspect of life.

On a positive Note though. St Patricks Day Parade in NYC will for the first time ever allow Gay Groups to march with Banners and its not being opposed by the Catholic Diocese. The Cardinal welcomed the inclusion and opportunity for Unity and will lead the march.

Some callers to 105.3 The Fan made verbal tackles against Sam. One caller said, “I don’t want my kids looking up to me and say Daddy, what does that mean that he’s gay?”

I don't want my kids looking up to me and say Daddy, what does that mean to be a Christian either.

So fucking deal with it, bigot.

I'm glad were in agreement
You won't find most of America or the free world marching to support it either. Nothing 'wrong' with that.
its already legal in most of Western Europe, Canada and Scandinavia. There is nothing to protest.

And it absolutely is wrong. One is either willing to be vocal proponent of equality for everyone or they're on the wrong side. Sitting on ones hands and ignoring injustice makes one part of the problem. Inaction is a problem. American Christians as a whole have made their position very clear. They're either against equality or unwilling to stand in defense of it, as you've said. Both are shitty positions.

How do you define a true Christian? Some who believes in Jesus Christ? It can't be defined as someone who follows the teachings of the bible, seeing as how that's basically impossible in this day and age.

I was raised Catholic and we were taught that believing in Jesus meant jack if you didn't also live by the spirit of his teachings. Believe in Jesus all you want, you weren't a real Christian if you didn't absorb the basic message.

This needs to be banned! How the hell am I supposed to explain to my kids that some idiots think being gay is a reason to not have a job and use your talents!?!

"What does gay mean?"
"It just means when two men love each other, or two women, instead of a man and a woman."
"Oh, OK."

How I found out about homosexuality. Verbatim.

Yep. My parents sat me down to tell me that two of our family friends were lesbians. I was maybe nine years old at the most. My response was basically the same thing, "Oh, ok. Can I go play?"

When they explained it to my younger sister, her reaction was basically the same. I doubt many kids give a shit.

Dumb, but could have been much worse. I'll take this over the other negative things they could have done.

If you were a slave should you obey your master? Do you pay no thought for tomorrow? Did you donate all your money to the poor?

I read an article once where a father took pride in correcting his three year old son when his kid said it's okay to be different because the bible teaches tolerance and love.

How am I supposed to explain to my child that followers of a man who preached peace and tolerance regularly form seething mobs to demonize and harass normal people trying to live normal lives?

I heard these Christians also like to pretend to eat human flesh and blood, but that sounds like a disgusting rumor so I'm going to go ahead and leave that out of our conversation.

"It just means when two men love each other, or two women, instead of a man and a woman."

It all sounds so simple. You couldn't possibly be telling the truth, or else it would mean all those religious people are whipping up a shitstorm about homosexuality just to hate on others for no good reason. Why would anyone do that? I was always told religion is a force for good.

Lolalright.

I know you're banned but maybe you'll see this anyways, and maybe someone with the same opinions as you will see it too.

The huge portion of the lesser developed world that thinks of me and my kin as lesser people? That makes them assholes. The portion of my country that thinks my queer brothers and sisters and I don't deserve the same rights? Assholes. That's what it is, straight up, and pretending it's "just an opinion" makes you even more of an asshole than people who just don't know any better.

It'll take Jesus to save the Cowboys this year, lol.

Those fans should be complaining about something more relevant to them, like ISIS persecuting Christians in Iraq.

One caller said, “I don’t want my kids looking up to me and say Daddy, what does that mean that he’s gay?”

I will never understand this kind of thinking - gay people aren't just going to stop existing because you don't like them. At some point you might have to spend 45 seconds telling your kid "some men fall in love with other men". WHAT AN ORDEAL!

How do you define a true Christian? Some who believes in Jesus Christ? It can't be defined as someone who follows the teachings of the bible, seeing as how that's basically impossible in this day and age.

There's no such thing as a "true" believer of [insert religion here]. Religious people come in many forms, which is part of the reason why all the convoluted denominations exist.

It's a complex situation where you're supposed to love your neighbor, but both the Old and New Testaments (not Jesus though) outlaw homosexuality...

Cognitive dissonance basically.
