I feel one reason is the never-ending fight for control of society. Sexuality is a powerful lever with which to manipulate human beings. By locking it up, and metering it out only if a person fully subscribes to and supports their belief system and organizations, they gain a lot of influence over the shape of culture.

In short, when you need their specific christian values, and traditional straight marriage ordained by the "right" church to be allowed a look at the opposite sex sideways and eventually have any hope of doing the nasty, the church has a hell of a lot of power over your life. The people in the church who are control freaks and desire security by having power over others benefit.

That FLDS colony in Texas is a good example. If young men didn't toe the line, they wouldn't be allowed to get married, which is a huge deal in the colony as there were way more men than women. Because they are selfish and lazy. No one "hates" the fact that kids are poor and hungry in the same way that people "hate" porn. Porn is a tangible thing that they can fight against and be seen as heroes for doing it by said haters. Those same haters will also give money to them for taking on such a noble quest.

Fighting porn is also a lot easier than helping the poor. Most of their time will probably be spent doing communication based things. They will call people from their comfy offices, meet with people in comfy offices, send emails on computers in comfy offices, etc.

Helping poor people involves helping poor people. There are things like food that needs storing and transporting, housing to organize and maintain, clothes to distribute. That takes a fuck lot of work and money to do right and none of the poor are going to pay them to do it so why bother?
