When you guys conquer a city is it preferable to annex it or make it a puppet state? Sometimes I conquer these smaller cities (not capitols) and they become burdensome to manage when I start conquering everyone.

Its too bad you cant name cities anymore, I always wanted to make a Denver with the Americans, that city you have would be the perfect spot! lol
You can, just have to pop into the city screen after you found it. There should be a rename button or something near the title card.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
You can still name cities.

After founding a city click the city's name and then near the top look for the Edit button.

Puppets first. Always. I lose less happiness and usually (from what I remember) you can't build anything in the first few turns anyway.

It's the amount of turns of the city size

So if you're gifted a 30-40+ city, that's over 30 turns

I, myself, prefer annexing... Especially late game

Hiya! First post. I've been playing alot of Venice, but the most recent I had a bad start in an inland ocean. I'm next to the Shoshone(Oh boy..those land grabbers). A game before that Me and the Shoshone were bros but they controlled so much, and even though we were best buddies they screwed me over when I helped them defeat Japan and suddenly the whole world hated him and me, and then they were about to invade me but I won with Diplomacy.

I'm playing on King atm, but what should I rush as Venice? And for my first merchant should it be used to buy a city or to get the bulk gold.

Having a blast with Venice, I just love the new changes.

Anywho, hi to all you guys here! Hope to discuss many stories and what not in the future and await for more Civ V.

Also, any 'must-have' mods for the game?

?

Buy a city state, hopefully within sea route range, and use a cargo ship to move food back into Venice. You can only control what is built in Venice, so its your #1 priority basically the entire game.

Gotcha. The game I'm in right now is soooo bad for me, even buying a city state I can only shuttle food in.

The positive thing is that my religion can spread massively because of the enclosed space. The bad thing is I can't fully take advantage of my UA. Granted I prefer Cargo Ships, caravan wise I'm good to go!

So umm how do pantheons work? I have the pantheon '1 culture from shrines', but didn't even get to found a religion because i'm on Immortal, and now that Venice has spread his religion to me, I get the pantheon of culture from pastures too? Does it always work like that: you get your own pantheon you founded no matter what in your cities, and then if your city is a majority of another religion you also get access to that pantheon? I've never had one of my own cities not be my own religion for very long so I've never noticed that...

You can't raze citadels :(

But as Venice, you should buy a City-state. One that's already about size 8-9-10 and has a Natural Wonder in it's borders.

Save the militaristic ones for later, those might give a lot of units by that time.

You can't? I had the AI do it to one of mine two nights ago.

Speaking of razing, I finally realized I could do a campaign of terror during a stalemate and start razing the opponents tiles. Twice as fun when you're sending in lancers who run in, raze and run out.

Darius set me up with a pretty sweet settlement after that.

GODDAMNIT Ethiopia won't move their goddamned scout out of my way so I can build a fishing boat.

fucker has been there for like 20 turns now. Got open borders cause I needed it but now it's biting me in the ass.

Yeah, I use the in game editor mod for that kind of stuff and delete them from existence or teleport them a few hexes away. I don't care that it's cheating, I'm not going to be trolled by a computer machine.

What? Has it changed since vanilla? That would be great!

But damn, I could have taken the city before Ghengiz set up his walls :( I was literally standing on top of it to see if you get the defense bonus. Didn't see the pillage option.

this still the place we go to talk about Civ if we don't have the expansion?

because Civ you guys. preeetty good

what do you guys like as far as mods?

I got one of the giant earth maps with accurate civ locations, and went "epic" for game length

I am not going to win, but it's cool to play still

playing as Alexander, ended up taking out Rome and Berlin immediately to take advantage of the fact that you get slightly strong very early units as that civ, but I'm finding that the city-state love isn't good for much more than happiness.

also, fuck Rameses, that dude is always putting cities like RIGHT outside my territory. I've had to stomp his ass like three times now. sick of his bullshit.

You can't permanently remove at Citadel, but you can pillage which removes the effects. Then when you take control of the land, you can repair the citadel and it's yours! :D

Haven't played a single mod actually. With all the expansions I haven't gotten to the point where a normal game bores me and I want to play a mod.

Any good terrain mods out there btw? I am getting a bit sick of the same graphics all the time.

If there's an Escape From Zombie Island mod released for Civ5, I will mod immediately though. And play nothing else. I still boot up Civ3 from time to time just to play that mod.

The mod in the workshop that generates normal maps but with less ice and more passable polar oceans is actually quite good. Tundra is much better balanced with it around.

I consistently have a huge stockpile of aluminium. Does anyone ever actually use theirs?

My advisors also love to suggest building recycling plants, which seems really unnecessary because I'm tits-deep in aluminium as it is.

You use aluminium to build the spaceship parts. It is also used for late-game units such as the Stealth Bomber, Jet Fighter, Modern Armor, etc.

I see. I guess I've just been winning Diplomatic victories early enough that I never get to build those units.

Stealth Bombers got nerfed so hard back in Gods and Kings. They were the premier way to end games in Vanilla. Still worth beelining for in a domination game if you think it's going to drag out due to a runaway.

Stealth Bomber Rushing with Washington was so wonderfully powerful... I miss it dearly. In fact, I might have a quick blast of Vanilla in his honour.

The ethnic diveristy one (RED), reseed, in game editor (specifically for the trolling), and a lot of the different maps, including the one you mentioned. I definitely prefer large/huge maps.

Is reseed really needed anymore? Restart game on turn 1 if I get a start that doesn't meet baseline playable standards works fine to take mulligans.

There's also Faster Aircraft Animations, Reforestation (which I don't know if it's balanced, but it is cool), City-states Leaders, Warcraft and Mass Effect civilizations and many scenario/conversion mods. The biggest ones right now are Faerun and Mod of Ice and Fire, but I'm one of the guys making the latter, so I'll just say you should check it out lol

I think Red Planet is the only one that really changes tile appearance.

Depends on how long it takes to restart with your settings. I don't have an SSD and an AMD processor and for some reason I keep pumping it up to 22 players even if I keep telling myself "you know, 12 is really enough", so shit just chugs away at startup for awhile for me. Other games are fine, but for some reason performance between advancing through the setup screens is really bad for me with Civ V, so it skips a few 30 second ~ 2 minute steps.

The biggest ones right now are Faerun and Mod of Ice and Fire
I use the maps but not the civilization conversions. I really want to see someone do a full SMAC conversion.

Omg turning off animations is the best thing ever. Cuts like 1.5 hours off a game.

no animations, show all tile yields all the time. Only way to play.

Huh,that's damned interesting. I never even considered turning off the animations. I love bombers to death, but I also sometimes use bomber attacks as stretch breaks, or opportune times to go and get a snack or use the water closet.

Is that how you guys play large map games in less then 20 hours? By turning off animations?

Yeah, at the beginning, I like seeing all the details so I sometimes keep animations off, but by the time mid to late game comes around, fuck it, I'm turning on quick animations and quick movement. Especially during the AI's turn. Unless....they are attacking with planes and I don't know where the hell they're coming from.

I wish there was a setting that would keep animations on, but speed them up by like 2 or 3x.

What was that thing you had in your city menu? I saw you clicking resources and putting a little lock on them. Never seen that before.

That's the citizen management part of the city screen. Top right panel. Sometimes the game doesn't pick the optimal tiles, so you want to pick them yourself.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm assuming this is some huge nuance of the game i completely missed. This is like when i found out about specialists, lol.

The citizen management panel is right above the specialist panel. You click it and you see where all the citizens are working on your land. You can set automated presets to maximize food, production, gold, etc, or set 'default' for a nice balance.

Later, when you want to get more advanced, you can set some or all of the tiles manually.

manual assignment of citizens to tiles to work is fundamental to wide empires where you are gated by happiness for growth, not by available food.

Thanks for the Citadel tip guys, razed that tile like there was no tomorrow. Gengiz was so scared he gave me the city in exchange for peace. Beelined to cannons and slowly building up enough force to blow him off the map. After that, Alexander is next line.

Also found out that Maria Therese is on the map btw, being a runaway and all. You jump to a new difficulty level as Siam and end up with Ghengiz, Alexander and Maria Therese... If Venice somehow manages to show up, the party would be complete. Luckily the world congres has been founded.

My constant war with Ghengiz is getting me a lot of friends though. The AI doesn't like people who keep attacking city states. But they love the guy who keeps liberating them :)

Messed around with Spain a bit. They are ridiculous if you have access to natural wonders. I got Mt. Sinai early with my capital, and I was getting 16 faith a turn from that thing. Obviously, that led to a pantheon, and because of my situation, I grabbed One With Nature and was rolling in 24 faith a turn from a single hex. I also had access to Lake Victoria in my area and was able to get a settler there in time for my second city, which gave me 12 food off the bat, later adding 8 faith due to my Pantheon. And later in the game, I was able to get that World Assembly policy passed that gives you +5 culture for natural wonders, which doubles to +10 with Spain. No one opposes it either unless they despise you, making it pretty easy to push through in my experience. And that double gold bonus for finding wonders is awesome early game. Gives you some great gold right off the bat, which is more useful than ever in BNW.

Hell, their UUs are good too. Tercios are better than I remember. That anti-mounted bonus helps quite a bit. Conquistadors made excellent scouts that could also settle when checking out my opponents' continent. I'm a little surprised I haven't seen them get much love. I guess you're a bit screwed if you get stuck with no natural wonders, but in games I play I can reliably get access to one or two if I rush. Once you get those massive boosts from natural wonders, you really have an advantage. So yeah, I really dig Spain. They're lots of fun.

by the way hi i'm new

Spain can be immensly powerfull, imagine finding El Dorado early. 2 free settlers... That's a won game right here.

But, it's too random. In the 40 games I've finished and the hundreds I've rerolled, I've never gotten a natural wonder in the neighbourhood of my starting area. And maybe 2 or 3 instances where I got one in a city I settled myself. And that's the reason Spain isn't actually OP, there's a big chance their entire UA is useless. Except for like 600 gold or something on a standard map. Which isn't useless... It's a settler and change, but hardly really good.

But when you get a holy mountain in your starting position... man... Just go Holy War and finish up early.

Wow, really? It seems like I have access to at least one natural wonder at some point in a significant percentage of my games. Even if it's one I don't particularly like, like Old Faithful. Do you usually play on a particular map type?

Maybe I just got lucky in these past couple games.
