Civilization VI, Battlefield 1 hitting notably high concurrency numbers

Hotdamn those BF1 numbers. Great to see a PC-centric franchise coming back strongly. Twice that number on PS4 and a little less than twice on Xbox One, is also great to see but expected, obviously. But more importantly this means that the game will have longer legs on PC, just like what BF3 & 4 were (are) on consoles. Completely deserved success.

Also nice to see Civ VI doing great. It's sitting at around 420K on Steam (don't quote me on this but I read somewhere that there's a 2/3 day delay on steampy tracking weekend data for releases or something along those lines so it "might" be well over 420K now - but let's see this around Tuesday to get a clearer picture of current sales), so 162K of those being concurrent is a fantastic turn up, isn't it?

No, it wouldnt.
People having anything against Origin are in minority, like its probably not even a 1% of those numbers.
Don't know about his claim but yours is just as unfounded if not more so. Exposure alone would boost numbers on steam well above origin.

I don't think exposure is an issue for a long running, popular franchise, published by EA, with a huge marketing push behind it.

Got both. Wanted to play Battlefield online yesterday but friggin' PSN still down here in Japan so I ended up playing Civ VI all night. I'm sitting at 10 hours played right now.

No Man's Sky is down to a max 1k, and as low as 350~ a day, wow.

Im very serious. Hmmmmm?
You're oversimplyfing it, ridiculously much so. It's pretty much the same as you would attribute the success to simply being sequels for some of gaming's largest IPs, or by saying you just need to launch on October 21st etc. Game's success depends on thousands of factors, and a subjective opinion like "good" is hardly the strongest correlating factor, not to mention there are a ton of successes that could be said aren't all that good by critics or by public ratings (No Man's Sky as a late example) yet have seen major success (Even SBF reviewed much, much lower and went to sell over 14 million copies).

If the community on every platform is in excess of 100000 concurrent players, then is there really any practical difference? (I'd even go so far as to pose the same question if it were "just" 10000 concurrent players)

Longevity on PC is the real issue. Launch means little, right?

Youre wrong. Those games that dont sell are no good.

C'mon, keep it simple.

Do I really need to add it at the end of my posts? :3

Depends on the game. For a battlefield? I wouldn't be surprised if you could still find plenty of games by the time the game becomes completley unplayable on consoles.

The more casual the game, the less likely that's going to happen though, sure.

The numbers for both platforms might be fine for online, but in a year when both are down 90% (or whatever), then one may prove more full. That said, I still play BF4 on Ps4 every now and then and rarely struggle to get a game.

I'd wager PC's BF1 numbers (good as they are) would be doubled if it was on Steam.

I can't imagine EA really makes up for Steam's cut by going at it on their own.

I guess they're trying to play the long game with Origin?

Doubt it, the biggest games out there right now on PC aren't on Steam. Overwatch, League of Legends, Minecraft, Battlefield. They seem to be coping without needing to give Valve 30% of sales.

Really? You don't thik the game would be even more popular on Steam?

It might be more popular on Steam, but not as big a difference as it would have been many years ago.

The days of Terraria becoming popular because Minecraft was not on Steam are probably long gone.

Feels good to be an armchair general. New Civ is always awesome but a WW1 themed Battlefield game to boot? Almost makes up for no Command and Conquer
