Class of Heroes 2 [PSP] US website launched!

Hmm, in that case (depending on the length of the game), maybe that could be a challenge for a second playthrough.

Maybe if you put three fairies in the back row and put something more substantial in the front row. Then the dearth of fairy HP wouldn't be such a problem.

Is it too late to do a 'John Truitt voicing everyone' kickstarter? Watch the money pile up!

Heh. Around the kickstarter deluxe pack time, he was onboard with the plan for voicing Galenos, the creepy weird doctor with a heart of gold, but unfortunately the voiced version possibility has sailed. We'll be doing good just to get the English opening song in there at this point. The Japanese PSP game didn't have voice anyway, so it's not like anything material is really lost, although having it already planned out in my head makes it feel that way.

I can read things in his voice just fine, that'll have to do.

So I figure I'll share this here:
http://pokowiki.com/totomono2/

That's the Japanese wiki for Class of Heroes 2. It has a few areas of interest, which I'll likely be localizing and posting random useful stuff like I've been doing with Elminage Original.

One apparent small bug is that if you get a given stat to 0 (or perhaps, -1), it counts as having that stat at 255. There are some rather convoluted ways using gear to do so -- provided you never gain a stat when leveling, heh.

Other random tricks include selling gear with purple (Random) elements, which causes the purple elements to be rerolled after you re-buy it. Think that's a callback to CoH1, which in turn is a callback to Xth2.

Apparently Geomancers (the Khulaz racial class) get an ability called "kouun no kane" -- "Lucky Bell" -- at level 45, which increases XP and Money gain. At level 99, it doubles all XP and Money gained.

While not super useful for the main game, it's vital for the post game grind. If I'm understanding it right, it stacks muliplicatively (30% + 30% doesn't equal 60%, it would equal 69%) and caps out at having two L99 Geomancers at the same time.

I really wish I wasn't/am not a poor grad student when this Kickstarter happened. :(

I think we all wish that had went down a bit differently, yeah.

This thread kinda died down, heh. Hey Mr. Ireland, any news? The recent replies to Monkeypaw's blog (wherein I cannot seem to get any of my explanations as to why the race names aren't the same as CoH1 to pass moderation for some reason) kinda suggest to me that the UMD thing may be going ahead?

Everything's in a holding pattern until people we're dealing with start coming back from the holidays. :)

40 bucks sounds a bit too pricey for me. I paid 40 for the original and regretted it after 30 minutes of play.

The game might improve on the original.....but it has competition with Unchained Blades 3DS next week, and Etrian Odyssey 4 in February for my time and money.

It won't be $40, don't worry.

Woo. Fixed my PSP's analog stick. Should be ready for Class of Heroes 2 now.

I've been fiddling with the Japanese wiki. I don't suppose I could bum a list of skills from the localized version off of you, Mr. Ireland? I was going to translate some of the wiki into English and use the Localization's terms. ;)

Oh, right, I get it. Well, I *hope* we're successful with it, but given that talk is cheap, there are no guarantees until fans show up, money in hand. Besides, I want a physical copy for myself, too! If we can get enough fans to support it, we can make it status quo for all our releases. And then maybe it will wrap around and other smallish pubs follow suit. As a collector, I would like nothing more.

I like the idea of limited physical releases. Is there a minimum print run threshold that needs to be met in order to make that a reality?

Really, really low. Few thousand physical preorders and we should be able to do it. Almost ready to take the temperature for doing this to see if we can hit that, just a few low run cost details to work out. If we do it, once these preorders close, it will be digital only from there forward.

There are a lot of skills. Here's the ones for two of the classes, with descriptions:

Necromancer
----------------
Evil Deadly - Extensively damages souls, undead, spirits, and demons.
Hollow Requiem - Prays for refuge of the undead souls that are cleansed from the enemy.
Soul Wall - Evades fatal damage once using dead souls.
Soul Circle - Allows rebirth.

Dragon Knight
-------------
Dragon Killing - Gives dragons a taste of their own bitter medicine.
Bullet Catcher - Take the damage from an attack for an Ally.
Dual Wield - Attack with a single-handed weapon in each hand.
Max HP UP - MAX HP increases to 1.5x normal, up to 9999.
Shin Yong 2 Sword - Able to wield and attack with any kind of weapon in both hands except projectiles.
Soul Circle - Allows rebirth.

Awww... Yeah, that's a bummer about the voices. But as long as there are nice meaty sound effects during the battles I will be fine. =D

Eh. I really didn't care about the voices. I didn't even remember them being part of the Kickstarter.

These kinds of niche games are never going to get the huge kind of numbers that would make adding voices make any kind of economic sense. Barring breakaway successes or somesuch, of course, but not every game can be a Disgaea or what have you.

Things like translating the sound effects make a lot more sense to me.

Hm, no updates to the official site yet. Let me go dig in the Japanese Wiki a bit for interesting tidbits, I suppose.

Vic, any news on the game? Release date, deals, preorder goodies? :)
...I wonder if I'm allowed to post this, because technically it's backers-only—but it doesn't necessarily contain any secret links like the NNK WE-reordering fiasco and it really seems like a "the more people who know, the better" sort of thing.

Mr. Ireland, if you don't like it let me know and I'll nuke this post.

The Class of Heroes 2 Kickstarter said:
We're sending out a message thanking all the backers that supported our ultimately unfunded effort to do an awesome Deluxe Edition of Class of Heroes 2. It didn't work out as a deluxe edition, but that's not because all of you didn't try hard, and we really appreciate the support you showed.

Due to a stream of fan requests over the last few months still requesting even a regular physical version we have been able to negotiate a pre-order only physical release of the game that will also come with a download code if we can hit a minimum number of preorders for it.

We wanted to tell you first that, as a believer and backer of our CoH2 Deluxe Kickstarter, you may have the opportunity to preorder a Kickstarter Supporter Physical+Digital Edition of the Class of Heroes 2 game that will have different disc art than the "general" preorder version. Because this is planned to be a preorder only physical release and the game will be digital only from release day onward, the physical game will be rare, but the Kickstarter Supporter edition will be even more exclusive.

We have to hit a combined 2500 units to be able to do the physical edition, so we will first do a "general" non-binding signup via email where fans indicate their interest, and then if we have at least 2500 fans indicating they want to preorder, we'll open an actual preorder signup and the physical version will be a go. Fans that preorder will also be able to vote for the cover art to be used. Look for details, including pricing and the "I'm interested in a preorder" email address very shortly.

Added emphasis (...and line breaks) for enhanced readability.

Will the physical release preorders be open to anyone (outside US etc...?) and will you please let us know on here when we need to start throwing our money? :-)

Edit: Can't believe I only just now ended up for the first time on that Kickstarter page...

Will the physical release preorders be open to anyone (outside US etc...?)

Actually I'm interested in this too, and also where it would be sold and for how much. Merchandise over around $30 are snatched by customs and you have to pay duties. It raises costs and it's added hassle so it might end up becoming a dealbreaker. That's why I'd preferred a kickstarter: since the games are "rewards", they are usually sent as "gifts" which erases the problem.

I woke up to see the Kickstarter email and thought it was a mistake because it ended months ago. But I was very happy when I read it! I will definitely pre-order.

The email really surprised me because I was just recently talking about the Class of Heroes 2 Kickstarter.

"We have to hit a combined 2500 units to be able to do the physical edition, so we will first do a "general" non-binding signup via email where fans indicate their interest, and then if we have at least 2500 fans indicating they want to preorder, we'll open an actual preorder signup and the physical version will be a go."

I sure do hope that by "fans" they mean more than the kickstarter backers, since they need at least 2500 fans to sign up, and the kickstart had only 882 backers...

I'm sure they do mean to attract more than just the kickstarter backers, because they said that they're hoping to make a preorder edition, as well as an even-more-limited kickstarter appreciation edition.

The kickstarter had 800 people willing to pay $60 or more for a deluxe edition.

If the game comes out at $30, I could easily see those backers wanting both the backer and the preorder editions. It would cost the same amount as before, it would just change what limited items they can get. If that happens, that would count for 1600 towards the 2500 unit requirement. At that point they would just need to find another 900 people (almost 100 of which might be those who were unwilling to pay $60 for a deluxe edition, but supported the kickstarter anyways, and are now rewarded with not just a cheaper option, but a chance to buy an exclusive edition).

Now is the time to see if people were right, and if Vic was wrong to shoot for a deluxe edition. If there are about as many people who are willing to buy a basic physical copy (but were scared off by the deluxe edition) as there were people supporting the deluxe edition, then I imagine Vic might be happy to be wrong.

Dunno how they're swinging it, but packing in a code for the digital version means a guaranteed physical pre-order for me. I was all for "physical only" back when the Kickstarter was live, but a year with the Vita has significantly changed my tune and I'd much rather have a PSN copy of this game. Both for the price of one though? That is a pretty sweet deal!

Vic, please make sure to get the news out on Siliconera/other online media if there is in fact a physical+digital preorder. I didn't even know this thread existed until today, and I haven't really seen much CoH2 coverage outside of GAF.

...I think you might be overestimating the number of people who would buy a second copy just to get different disc art. I have to admit, I wasn't actually interested in the LE aspect of the kickstarter. I just wanted a physical copy, and to support the idea of small physical runs + download instead of download only. I really want the former to become a viable option for niche titles.

But I do think this effort will attract more interest than the KS simply because the base price of the game won't be $60. There may even be some interested wholesalers, (as we saw in the NNK LE thread) which would definitely help.

Don't worry. The news hasn't even been officially launched yet. The message was just sent to Kickstarter backers to let them know in advance that a regular physical version may happen and also to tell them that because they backed it they'll get a special version of the disc art if they preorder. It was basically a "thank you" for their support of the Deluxe version that didn't fund.

There's no motive to sell more because we have two disc arts. Anyone that knows what I did at WD knows that the disc art variants were NEVER a marketing point for the initial run of the game. They were strictly to foster discussion and trading in the collector community in the months and years AFTER a game was released. I didn't even acknowledge there were variants until years later when we finally posted them on the WD website.

The goal is to get 2500 preorders for the physical+digital version between the two order pools (kickstarter backers + everyone else) so we can do a physical run, that's it. If we make it, we do it. If we don't, it's digital only. In either case, the game is done, so this is the last bit to resolve before release. Once the game is released, it's digital only.

Hey Vic, Somebody has already asked on the Kickstarter page, but I thought I'd ask in here also

Will the bundled digital code with these physical copies just be a US code? Or will we be able to specify region? And on that subject, I haven't really been keeping up with things, but is there going to be a wide digital release at all, or just US at this point?

I've pretty much moved on from the psp these days (ever since getting my vita) and while I could grab the psp out again I guess, I'd much rather use the vita.. but I don't have a US account, and doing the whole account switch thing is quite a pain on a vita

I mean this in the nicest way, but I hope you market this better than the Kickstarter. A full-fledged trailer, a mock-up of the physical version(or some such), etc.

Constructive criticism since I want this to succeed.
(I bet you could have Truitt narrate the trailer and rake in the dough.)

The game's coming either way. Since we're actually making less on the physical combo than a digital release (despite the higher price), it's straight-up fan service that we're even pursuing this so far.

Info dump and media for CoH2 preorder program are pushed off to Monday morning, though. My day was unexpectedly taken over when a doctor's visit turned into a big pneumonia thing. I'm still waiting on the last meds.

We DID complete the opening in English, FYI. The US release will have an English song with a little heavier guitar focus (but still the j-pop feel and melody). Debating whether to release it ahead of time or leave it as a surprise on bootup.

Getting pretty pumped for this! Rest up and we'll hope to hear from you on Monday.

(I vote for leaving the OP as a surprise.)

How far along is the release?

And I'd say wait, given how some people(see above) tend to go rabid if something's dubbed.

Working Designs have always been good at English OPs.

You could make an argument that they're the ONLY ones good at it.

You're right, WD really did a awesome job.

The only problem is that WD broke and we don't any publisher at the same level of work.

With that in mind, we have 98 % of chances to get a very bad dub and 1,8% of chances of no dub and only 0.2% of getting a dub of WD level.

By the way, i cant imagine a english dub with two singers like in class of heroes 3 op:

Game's finished. We're set to go to Sony QA.

The chances of the dub meeting the average quality of all the songs I produced at WD is much better than 0.2%, but I'll take that bet. :)

Having the final version done, I would say it's not LUNAR level, but better than Alundra and Rayearth. It also hews closer to the Japanese lyrics, although I made it gender neutral since it's a co-ed school and the original song title was Danger(ous) Girls, which was totally sexist. Now it's Danger School.

It's also the first song we've done with a group, since the Japanese one was done by Sphere, a manufactured J-pop girl group. There's one lead (Kathy Emma, aka Lemina, etc), and three backup singers in the US version.

Great, now I get to picture Lemina singing it. Mega cool.

Thank you very much for this vireland.
I really appreciate giving physical another chance. Even if the numbers for physical aren't met, I may break my own rule and buy the digital version to support the work you do and to thank you for attempting to get a physical version of this out two times.

I look forward to hearing this. Some of your song dubs (like the Lunar ones) I vastly prefer over the Japanese version.

That's quite an interesting change. But if it fits the theme of the game, I can't complain. I'm more interested in how it turned out. :3
Kickstarter edition makes me wish I put money down even when I didn't have any at the time, but I'll still support this physical release regardless. Hope you get better Vic!
